Math Class for Wednesday, November 2 16:00-18:00

Since Mr. Eppes is out sick today, he has asked me to take over class.

So...announcements for today:
* Murphy MacManus, please talk to me about getting the notes for previous classes.
* Lily, Alanna, Jack or Han if you could be kind enough to give him those notes, that'd be great.
* If Kitty Pryde misses this class, she has detention. Um, er. Yeah.
* If Archie Kennedy misses this class, and does not give a valid excuse by Sunday, he's kicked out of class.

I'll get the classes started with the assignments for the day.

It seems like a science to me, but then again I'm not really too good at scientific stuff. Math's got all the rules and everything . . . but I guess it kind of has more rules than science does, doesn't it? With math you have to work within the rules to figure out whatever problems you're trying to solve by numbers, but with science you have to figure out the problems in order to make the rules.

So in a way, I guess they're the same, but in other ways they're total opposites.

Yes. Can I go now? *chews on the end of her pencil, nervously*

Just... had a bit of a... weird Quantum Physics class, that's all. I'm... I... I don't really want to talk about it. *bites clean through her eraser*

Sorry.

*glances over*

Hey . . . you okay?

*has just snapped her pencil in two*

Sorry, I... *bites her lip*

Cally -- what's wrong?

*looks at her, genuinely freaked out now*

"Kinds depends on yer point of view, doesn't it? 'Cause ya can't have science without math, but ya-" He cuts himself off yawning.

"Sorry. But ya can have math without science, aye?"

A nod of thanks before he downs about half of it.

"Ah... Science-wise, it'd be doctors, engineers; math without science... musicians maybe?" Shrugs as he finishes off the coffee.

I don't think so.

Science is about the physical laws, and understanding them. The constants, and even some of the laws, vary from world to world.

Math stays the same. Two is always two.

Math's like the next step up from science.

I don' see why not.

*frowns* The question doesn' make sense t'me. 'What kind of science is it?' It's math. Why should I have to give it a different name for it to be a form of science?

"Um, I guess so. You need math in science, so the two are at least linked together."

"Er, having to with moving things, I suppose. You need math to calculate how far an arrow is going to fly, for example."

"Yeah, it is. Math is experimental like science. Mathematicians think they're right like scientists do, but everything they believe is just part of a way of thinking that people came up with and it has no real grounding in reality. Yeah."

"Imaginary numbers. People made them up to explain stuff, and mathematicians believe in them, but they're not fact. They're just made up."
