Angelus is inside, looking as though there's a great deal on his mind and as though there's a high likelihood that his distraction has something to do with the travel plans that are scattered across his desk (anyone peeking would see London, Paris, and Rome listed on his notes). On Dr. Carter's desk is a box of fudge nut brownies from Deb's. The door to the classroom is wide open.

"Everyone's heard about it, but has anyone seen a body yet, or gotten a good reason why nobody has seen a body?" Duce holds up her hands, "Playing devil's advocate here. Angelus, you saw how people got when your life was threatened. How bad you think it's gonna get now that someone's gone missing?"

"I know, I know," Angelus rubbed his face. "Believe me, I'm no more thrilled about it than anybody else. Not the least of which is the reason you just mentioned."

He sighed. "Not like Bristow's got me on his speed dial for updates, but last I heard there was no body. Her dragon's freaked, though. Swears she's dead. Swears some killer did it. Which I guess rules out death by banana peel, but still."

"My brain keeps pointing to motive. There's one very obvious motive.. and it's so very obvious that it's giving me the itch. The lack of body and the fact that this rumour is all over school and in print before the police have had time to even do an inquiry, much less make a statement.. Something smells in Denmark. Someone wants this public, and someone wants people pissed off. And that's probably, if she is indeed dead, who killed her."

"Think this could maybe be a kidnapping?" Angelus asked. "It'd be the smarter move for a power game like that. Get everybody up in arms then start mailing Bristow locks of her hair or more personal body parts."

Duce says seriously, "I would sincerely not want to be in the shoes of the mentally deficient motherfucker who did that. The Dean strikes me as someone who takes his responsibilities very seriously, and he's responsible for our well being while we're here."

She rubs a hand over her face, "Although.. part of me hopes that's what's going on. As horrible as it is to think of Kitty in that situation, at least it's a situation with hope and.." she sighs, "if there was any way to get her back, he'd exhaust every resource he had trying. That's the vibe I get off him. I would never want to be on his bad side and whoever did this.. no matter what the outcome.. they just became a member of his top-ten shitlist."

"Based on the rumblings I'm hearing around school, he's not the only one forming that list," Angelus said. "Personally I'm not too pleased about it myself. Won't go around claiming Kitty and I were best buds, but she gave me the time of day. That sadly puts her way ahead of most students at this school."

Duce thinks of something, "You haven't heard whether her dragon's..er.. testimony.. has been reported to the police, have you?" She considers, "The police have the best resources for dealing with crimes like this, but only if they have all the facts, all the evidence. Otherwise, they're working in the dark. They'd also have a resource they don't normally have.."

Her voice drops, "Kitty was one of ours. There's a bunch of students, most of them non-human, but human ones as well, who are ready to run off with torches and pitchforks and flipping over every stone in town until they find out what happened and who did it. And that is likely to completely fuck up the existing investigation. Unless it's worked in coordination with the police."

A muscle in her jaw tightens, "I'd be willing to help them just for the chance at getting my hands on the fucker who hurt a 14 year old little girl who never hurt anyone." She shrugs, "Thinking about going down tomorrow and volunteering. Don't know if they could use me, but if they can.. I'm so there."

"I know Alanna was big on everything being done the right way," Angelus said. "I assume that means cops. Mind you, I assumed people couldn't be killed in town at all so there's where you can rank me on my educated guesses."

A thought occured to him. "Would the dragon's word even count at all? Far as I know Lockheed doesn't speak English, and something tells me the FTPD don't speak dragon. How's a human court going to count the testimony of whoever it is that says the purple-cat sized thing talked to them?"

Duce swears under her breath, in Latin. "They're not. They can't, it's hearsay and won't even be admitted into court. So the police.. are going to be looking for a missing girl. If they use any evidence from Lockheed to catch who did it, the asshole'll get off on a technicality."

"Back to square one. Kitty's missing. We need a clear trail linking her disappearance to whomever caused it, completely discounting Lockheed." She sighs, "Fuck."

"It is for moments just like this that I do not understand why my worse half wants to be a detective when he grows up," Angelus said. "Seems like a lot of work for little to no gain."

"Your worse half?" Duce's lips almost quirk in a smile. Almost. Her healthy sense of self preservation stops it, though.

"If you met him, you'd agree."

The eyebrow arches further, "Now I'm curious. Is this evil-twin type worse half, or husband-type worse half?"

That got a laugh out of him. "Evil-twin type. Only we share a body. So if he's here, I'm not."

"Oh," Duce said, feeling dumb. "Your.. soul-mate." She wrinkled her nose, "Oz mentioned y.. him tonight (http://www.livejournal.com/users/medusae_x/31886.html?thread=399502#t399502). He's the only one of the people from Sunnydale I've met who's never said anything negative about you. And he knows you're not.. Angel." She forcibly stops herself from pursuing that thread of conversation.

"Detective, huh?" Her tone is frank, "You'd be better at it than .. Angel would be. From what I've heard of him, he wouldn't have been able to stay objective."

"He can't put his pants on without a helpful diagram," Angelus said. "I have no idea how he thinks he's going to be some kind of Sherlock Holmes. But fortunately for us all, I'm here and I'm the one with the working brain cells."

"I consider that a good thing, yes," Duce drawls wryly, "Frankly, I don't think I'd get along with a vampire paladin. It would seriously fuck with my idea of how the world works."

Mock-regretfully, "Sorry, buddy, but I'd rather stake you than see you become all.." she flitters her hands, as if shoo'ing away some horrible image, "gooey." She shudders, "And now that I've given myself nightmares of a happy-fluffy-bunny Angelus.. "

"I'd rather be staked, believe me," Angelus said. "Please oblige if I'm so unlucky as to run in to gypsies again."
