Everyday Skills, Friday 2nd Period

Oz was not alone at the front of the Danger Shop (which today resembled a weird hybrid between a kitchen and a laboratory). With him he had a bald, glasses wearing man in chef whites.

"Hey kids. Now one of the more important life skills we're going to cover in this class is cooking, and while I could easily cover this myself, I figured that something so vital needs an expert to help out, so I'd like you to meet my buddy Heston here. He's not the real version, but he'll do. He's going to take you through a few simple recipies. So pair up and put your aprons on."

[Go for it]

"Me too," Juliet said. She started breaking up the chocolate, very equally unwillingly. "And even if I didn't, I can always order in. I wouldn't just make mousse."

"Who would?!" Rebecca agreed, shooting the back of Oz's head a contemptuous look. "Mousse is for, like, fancy dinners, anyway. I'm not going to be cooking for those myself."

Juliet nodded vigorously. "Uh-uh. Unless you're slumming on purpose. Plus restaurants are more fun, anyhow."

Juliet, your entitlement is showing.

"Well, yeah," Rebecca agreed, not one to be out-entitled. "Even boring charity dinners are more fun than cooking yourself."

"Plus charity dinners are a good deed," Juliet nodded, deciding Rebecca might be worth getting to know. "Cooking for yourself is just ... boring, even if this place makes it seem normal."

"Totally," Rebecca agreed. "I keep seeing people bake in the common rooms, and I'm like, 'Hello, don't you people have better things to do with your time? Order in!'"

"Right!" Juliet said, and punctuated it by dropping some chocolate into the saucepan so vigorously that some fell to the counter. "Not that there's all that much to do here, but you can always go off the island."

"Or have a party or something!" Rebecca gave a wistful sigh. "God, I miss parties."

She emptied out the bag of ice into the pot, taking a quick step back before any of it could splash over the sides.

"You should have been here in October," Juliet said, as she put the rest of the chocolate into the pot. "My brother and I had Hannah Montana at our birthday party. We're past due for another one."

She tried to pass the pot to Rebecca. "Here. I'm not doing the burning part."

"Hannah Montana," Rebecca repeated, unimpressed as she looked from the pot to Juliet. "Okay, no offense, but do people have, like, good parties around here?"

How could anyone possibly take offense at that?

"... not really," Juliet admitted, not seeming offended at all. "It's hard. There aren't nearly enough people with standards here."

a pause.

"I miss New York."

"I miss DC," Rebecca complained right back. "Okay, one of these days I'm going to have to do something about this. Do the dorms have a basement? I could totally work a basement party."

Meanwhile, she was peering into the pot like it would just tell her what the next step was.

"What's a basement party?" Juliet wondered, thinking D.C., poor thing. "Mostly people have them on the sixth floor. The ball pit is a big deal."

Said as if Juliet didn't kind of love the ball pit herself.

She glanced over to the pot. "I think we just need to heat it up until it melts."

"Ball pit?" How plebian. "What this town needs," Rebecca said with certainty, setting the pot on the stove, "is something edgy."

"Or for the cool bar to stop carding," Juliet contributed. "I just try to flee when I can."

"To where? Baltimore? Ew."

Snob.

"... um, Baltimore is a way better party town than D.C."

Duh.

Rebecca's eyes glinted mischeviously. "Not if you to go boarding school."

Which she had. So.
