Ethics Class [Thursday, January 12, 2012, 1st period]

This class had been a big hit (if you weren't Topher) last semester, so Anakin was bringing it back. Welcome to floating on dingies in the middle of nowhere, class!

There were set into groups of three and four, and though they were in the Danger Shop, they couldn't see any of their other classmates or land, only endless water.

Anakin's voice came over the speaker system: "There is no land for hundreds of kilometers, no fresh water, and you've run out of food. The only resources you have are the other people you have in the boat and any powers you and they might possess. Will you turn to cannibalism? If so, who will be the first to go?"

Hope you weren't hungry for breakfast, class.

"Again, if you'd prefer not to participate in this class, shake your head strongly and you will be taken out of the simulation."

With that the students were apparently left to their own devices.

This class was not going the way Dave expected.

But he gave some quick thought to the situation. "If it's okay with everyone, I'd like to call dibs on not being eaten."

"If you need to ask permission, then no. We feast upon you first."

Thank you, Loki.

"I'm the guy with experience in a kitchen," Jim added, smirking faintly. "You're going to want me along if you don't want to get food poisoning while you're gnawing on bits of Dave."

Helpful, Jim.

"Hey now. I've won awards two years in a row for making preserves. If anyone knows how to keep someone fresh for as long as we need, it's me," Dave said.

He didn't want to cannibalize anyone, but he had to take a shot to save himself.

"And he's way more meaty," Jim added, grinning a little.

"I will fish with my hands if I have to," Gabrielle said firmly. "I am not going to eat anyone, thank you."

And she hadn't even had her brush with cannibals yet.

"It's times like these I wish I still had the ruby slippers," Dorothy lamented. "Our teacher is certainly determined to put us into the worst possible situations."

She looked over the edge of the boat into the water. "Even if we did what he suggested, wouldn't we still die of thirst?"

Re: Group Two!

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Only --" Oh, Gabrielle was not going to talk about the amount of water in the human body, although when she clapped a hand over her mouth and grimaced it wasn't for that reason. That was just her seasickness kicking in. "Never mind. And we can't rely on hoping it rains, either."

Oh, gods, she was going to die of dehydration from barfing over the side of the boat before that happened, and that wouldn't increase their chances of getting fish, would it?

She grimaced. "There's water in fish spines, I know that much. Not much, but it could keep us alive for a while. And the eyes . . ." Thanks, Gabrielle, that was gross.

". . . I know a pressure point that numbs the taste buds?"

Just for grossing people out, she might be the first target for dinner.

Ryan opened her mouth to suggest that the others probably wouldn't want to eat her because she had a parasitic infection. But she quickly decided against that. No need to give away her secret over a classroom simulation.

"I have a small knife, and I know how to gut a fish if we can catch one," she suggested. "But getting fresh water might be a higher priority. We'll die of thirst before dying of hunger."

Re: Group Two!

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2012-01-12 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"And no guarantee we'll catch any fish, so we can't rely on that for a water source," Gabrielle agreed. Traveling around with Xena taught you all kinds of interesting if supremely icky survival techniques. She tapped a finger against her lips, felt her stomach lurch with the boat's bobbing, and quickly started tapping at the pressure point on her wrist instead. What were the odds she'd end up eating raw squid this time, anyway?

"Right. Do any of you have any powers we can use in a situation like this? Barring that, something we can use to trap condensation from the night air?"

Dorothy shook her head. "I don't even have pockets in this dress," she admitted. "I suppose I could tear some of the fabric off, if we could use that?"

Her survival techniques involved such things as 'lunchpail trees' and 'letting other people deal with the issue of food'.

Ryan shook her head as well. "I know some survival skills for living in the rainforest, but I don't think we'll find a lot of coconuts out here."

"I say we eat Loki," Alex said immediately. Even though Loki was on another boat.

"I don't think that's gonna work," Elle said. "We gotta eat one of us, and uh, nobody's snacking on me thank you very much."

"I don't think we really have to eat anybody," Alex said. "I can probably go a pretty long while without eating, at least, so we don't have to worry about me. Plus I'm more worried about water. Can't you die of thirst before hunger?"

Stacey was really, really trying not to think about things like the nutritional content of a human being. Besides, if she was stranded for too long, she'd die of diabetes and wouldn't have to worry about that anyway.

This class was hard.

"I would really rather get to land before we start talking about... other stuff," she decided.

Simon agreed. Kind of a lot. "Me too," he nodded. "Do -- does anyone have any useful powers? I don't think me turning invisible is going to help here."

Well, unless he wanted to hide himself to keep them from eating him.

Kate raised her hands. "Nothing much I can do out here, except be a half-decent swimmer." Swords weren't much good, and there was a deficit (luckily) of dead bodies.

"And I can and will get mean if anyone tries to eat me."

Self-preservation instinct was strong in this one.

"Shooting lightning probably wouldn't be a good idea right now," Billy said, thankful for once that he was kind of skinny. He probably wouldn't taste very good. "I could try to cast a spell, but I'm not sure what to ask for. My spells have to be kind of specific."

...Stacey was in a class full of crazy people, obviously.

"I'm with the swimming, too," Stacey volunteered lamely.
