Leadership, Friday, 3rd Period

Scott was going to host class in the Danger Shop today, but upon hearing exactly what that was, he couldn't quite bring himself to do it. It had taken enough energy to shave and wear a recently washed shirt. He couldn't also face such a reminder of his time with the X-Men. With... her. So when the class showed up to the normal classroom Scott had picked instead, they would see a tall guy standing in front of his desk who looked and smelled much cleaner than he had a week ago. But despite his cleanliness, Scott was wearing red tinted sunglasses despite being indoors, so there still had to be SOMETHING weird about him.

Or maybe you just knew him already, killing all of the suspense. Sigh. AUs.

"Good afternoon, everyone," Scott said, taking a step back to lean on his desk all casual-like. Start it nice and simple. Just like he used to at the Xavier Institute. A loooong time ago. Actually, not even that long, but it felt that way. "My name's Scott Summers. You can call me either Mr Summers or Professor Summers. I'll answer to either." Yep, despite the forced casualness he was showing, he still liked protocol. Sue him. "I'm not going to get into my qualifications for this class just yet, so you'll have to trust me when I say I have experience with the subject." It had less to do with creating an air of mystery and more with trying not to get too mopey on the first day.

"Leadership sounds like a simple concept at the beginning. All you have to do is convince people that it's worthwhile to do what you say, right?" Scott asked. Don't answer! It was rhetorical! "A lot of people will even give you a shot to show what you can do if it's not inconvenient for them. But then you get to the tough part. You have to keep them listening. Every decision you make and everything you ask your team to do is a referendum on your abilities. I'd love to tell you that it's easy and you get used to it. But honestly, it's something I've had trouble with myself at times." Damn you, Wolverine. Damn you.

"But that's something we'll get into more in future classes. For now, we're going to skip the class-wide introductions I understand you've been doing all week. Let's get straight to something more personal. I'm going to break you up into groups of three. Introduce yourselves if you need to. Get to know each other. Find out what kind of leadership qualities you think your group members might have. And then at the end of class, you're going to write down the name of whichever group member you think would make the better leader based solely on this initial contact and whatever criteria you have for the position right now. But no voting for yourself."

Before anyone could do a headcount and figure out that the math might not work, Scott added, "One last thing. Because we have 17 people signed up, two students will be free agents. Congratulations if you're here, Mr Drake and Miss Logan. You're my TAs. I want you to start out at the front of the class with me, then you can wander around and insert yourselves into any conversations you want."

Scott stepped forward from the desk and clapped his hands together. "Let's get started."

"Good. Then what are the qualities you would say the other has as a leader?" Susan asked.

Drunk or not, if you opened with that, Susan thought you had better have a good answer to her question. She was fun that way.

"Well, for a start, Tony is patient," Warren offered after a moment's thought. "I mean, I've seen him sit down and explain things to Topher."

Again, mostly while drunk.

"He's resourceful, too, and that's not just a money thing. You should see what this guy can throw together out of a box of scraps in a cave whatever he's got sitting around."

Tony, Topher and Ben had turned his minivan into a big yellow deathtrap, after all.

"All right, though that description of resourcefulness might fall into more of a support category," Susan considered. And then she looked at Tony as if to ask him the same question, but without actually asking it because she expected him to already know it.

Thank Scott for this, boys.

"I'm also used to high pressure situations," Tony added. And going crazy in them. Though that was due to alcohol. Or Wanda Maximoff. Or crazy exs. Or... okay, so maybe he wasn't the best leader.

"Definitely necessary," she agreed. "What would you say about Warren?"

"My wit, charm, and amazing hair don't count," Warren offered, helpfully.

"He... has a lot of patience," Tony settled on after a moment. "Which is good."

"Uh... thanks, Tony," Warren replied, with maybe a slightly pained look on his face.

Warren had a lot of work to do if that was the best that Tony could come up with. He sighed, and then looked toward Susan.

"All that said, you seem to be the one guiding this discussion along. So... professionalism, prioritization, the right attitude?"

Susan considered this.

"Those sound accurate."
