Ethics [January 5, 2012, 1st period]

"Good morning," Anakin said, sweeping into the classroom. "I'm Anakin Skywalker and this is Ethics. If you're in the wrong place, now's the time to get up and flee."

If you were in the right place, it wasn't bad advice either, depending on Anakin's mood. He paced in front of their desks as he spoke, Jedi robe swirling behind him. "Most classes this week focus on introductions, but there are a few familiar faces in the classroom already and I'll figure out the rest of you as we go along. Fandom, as you might have realized already, is a multi-dimensional nexus where beings from many different places and times come together." He made sure to look each student in the eyes as he spoke. "As such, what you may feel to be moral and immoral might be completely different than the person sitting next to you. I encourage discussion, even heated discussion, but it must be phrased in a constructive way. Responses like 'yes, but that's dumb,' 'yes, but you're dumb', or punching someone are not constructive."

He'd had all of those reactions before, of course, but this wasn't about the ethics of the Ethics teacher.

"We touch on unpleasant subjects in this class, some of which might not be all that hypothetical to your life's experience," he added. "If you prefer not to discuss a particular scenario, just let me know by shaking your head and I'll skip you until the next week."

Anakin clasped his hands together. "Now, let's begin: if you had to choose between killing one person in order to save five others, or doing nothing even though you know that doing nothing means that those five people would die before your eyes, what would you do? And what do you think would be the right thing to do?"

He glanced down at his notes. "Oh, yes. Finally, could Mr. Hawkins and Miss Gabrielle please see me after class."

It'd been a while since Jaina had been around for Christmas (for her, anyway), and so when she had some time before crashing out for the night, she decided to call in, remembering this used to be Anakin's office hours day.

At least she called after class and not during?

Anakin chuckled. "It's fine," he said. "You caught me as class finished up. Ethics is on Thursdays this semester."

"From you?" Anakin grinned. "Sure. When are you coming back?"

"Possibly next week your time," she answered. "I heard there was some thing going on? So if I'm free I'll be there."

Anakin ran his fingers through his hair. "In that case, you need a heads-up on something."

"Never a good sign," Jaina said slowly. "What's up?"

"Anakin's here as a student," he said, seeing no way to sugar-coat the news.

"Was there something I could do?" Gabrielle asked when class was over and she made her way to the front of the room.

"Yes," Anakin said, nodding. "I need a teacher's aide. Would you be interested?"

"I don't think we exactly see eye to eye on the subject matter," Gabrielle answered slowly, but not in a way that indicated this was an argument against the idea. "But -- if you don't think that's a bad thing, I think I could be, yes."

"I don't pick people because they agree with me," Anakin said. "I pick people who seem to put some thoughts into their answers."

Sometimes it was a bad idea to give Gabrielle any sense of importance about her opinions. Sometimes it was a good thing; it kept pressure on her to keep giving them further thought.

"Sounds like the same way I'd describe the people I usually like to spend my time with," she answered. "In which case I accept."

"I promise Morph didn't follow me to class today," was Jim's way of addressing Anakin as he approached him after class, a little wide-eyed. "I made sure he was sleeping on my pillow when I left my room, I swear."

... Jim's first instinct when called to see someone in a position of authority was to assume that he was in trouble for something. Sorry, Anakin.

Anakin smiled. "I know," he said. "I would have felt his presence otherwise. I was wondering if you'd been interested in being one of my teacher's aides."

Oh. Wait, he was't in trouble? Jim kind of blinked at that, but then broke out into a little grin. Hey, that was way better than getting detention or something.

"I could probably handle that," he decided, nodding. "What sort of stuff would I have to do?"

He was prepared to work his butt off, just so long as it didn't involve peeling potatoes.

"Nothing too strenuous," Anakin said. "Passing out papers, mostly. You might have to take over teaching a class if I can't make it in, but I don't miss class as a general rule."

He was much too anal retentive for that.

"I happen to pass out papers like a pro," Jim laughed. "Sure, I'll do it. And hey, I get a better seat this way, right?"

"Cool," Jim decided, looking pretty pleased for a guy who was just told that he'd be handing out papers for the rest of the semester. He wasn't in trouble yet! Yes! "I won't let you down, sir. Thanks."
