Library, Thursday [01/05]

Today was shaping up to be a good day for Billy, with his first library shift and all. He took a few minutes to stash his stuff behind the desk and get a good layout of the library - he'd only wandered through about half of the sections before, for his own personal reading interests. Once he was settled back at the desk, he pulled out the binder and script that Troy had given him, and started breaking down the scenes in Petey Sci-Fi like he'd been asked. Hopefully, any visitors wouldn't notice the way his ears were turning pink as he read.

He won't mind being distracted, really.

And that would be Matt walking into library and pretending to use his cane as a way to guide himself around. Unfortunately for Matt, even his special senses and echo-location wouldn't be able to help him find a book that he needed.

"Hello?" he called out when he got near the front desk. "Is there someone here who might be able to help me?"

Billy glanced up and shut his binder with a smile. "Hi," he said, waving before noticing the cane. "Uh, I can help you." He came out from behind the desk, keeping a small distance from Matt. "What do you need?"

"Some braille books actually," Matt said pulling a list from his pocket. The list itself were some common text books and a couple of plays from Shakespeare. "I'd find them myself but I have a feeling I might get lost in the process."

"Yeah, this place is kind of big," Billy said, glancing at the list. "I hope we have these for you. Are you reading them for pleasure or did they get assigned to you?"

"Bit of both," Matt admitted as he fiddled with his cane. "I'm hoping to get a scholarship to Columbia so I'm taking some online courses here to make sure I fulfill all my requirements. I'm Matt, by the way. Matt Murdock."

Billy hesitated for a second at that, because really, how many blind Matt Murdocks could there be in the world? "Billy Kaplan. It's nice to meet you," he said. "Are you from New York? Um, wanting to go to Columbia and all, I mean. That's a good school."

"Yeah, I'm from Mid-Town West or Hell's Kitchen," Matt replied. "Are you a New Yorker too?"

"Yeah, I'm from the Upper West Side. I think a third of the students are from New York now," Billy said with a laugh. "Here, why don't I take the list, and we can go to the braille section and I'll see what I can find?"

"That would be great," Matt said as he started to follow Billy. "We'll have to get all the New York exiles together and argue which Ray's Original has the best pizza."

Billy laughed, and stopped at the shelves with the books in braille. "Here we are," he said, trying to make sure to give enough warning that he wouldn't make Matt run into him. "Are you going to need any help taking these somewhere?"

That was sweet of Billy but with Matt's senses it wasn't necessary. Not that Billy knew that. "Oh, I think I should be able to shlep them back to my room," Matt said gratefully. "I just appreciate you helping me out."

"Oh, it's not a problem. That's what I'm here for. I think, at least," Billy said, making a pile of the books from Matt's list. "Today's my first day so I'm sort of winging it for now."

"Well I'd never have been able to tell. You have the makings of a fine librarian," Matt joked. "Or at least as far as I can see."

Billy grinned proudly as he finished getting Matt's books together. "Thanks! I hope you're right," he said, picking the stack up and trying to decide if he should really let Matt try to take them. "I got everything on your list, so I'll just check them out for you and they'll be all yours. I hope the Columbia plans work out."

"We'll see. Thanks for your help!"

Because there just wasn't enough Marvel in the library yet...

"You're a librarian now?" Tony asked, looking around as though he might get hives from all the non-digitized data.

"Tony! Hi!" Billy said, unable to hide his surprised look. "Uh, yeah, I just started today. What are you doing here? I mean, can I help you with anything?"

"I can't just come into the library?" No, Tony. You can't. "I might have been looking if there are any books from that one Japan we went to... a while back."

That so helped narrow it down, Tony.

"Uh," Billy said intelligently, trying to think of things that might narrow that Japan down. "I could help you find the books on foreign countries and you can see what's there? Or I can look for you?" So helpful, he was.

"You're not busy with... books." Doing book things?

"Not at the moment." Like Billy could be too busy for anything involving Tony. "I mean, it's my job to help you out, right?"

"Cool! I don't really come to libraries much."

"You definitely seem like more of an internet search guy." Also, water was wet, sky blue, etc. Billy came around from behind the desk, and headed for the books about other countries, wondering how long he could keep Tony in here before he died of boredom. "But books about Fandomish stuff will probably only be here. Or in the Special Collections, but I so don't want to go back in there anytime soon."

"I missed that part." Don't sounds disappointed, Tony. "What was it like?"

"Mushroomy. Kind of dark. Not as scary as I'd been led to believe, but I also didn't go very far to reduce the risk of walking into somewhere entirely different," he said. "Plus, you missed the D&D game. You should make Topher have one again so you can play too."

Tony snickered at that. "As long as there's no dressing up for it, okay."

...look, Rhodey and him had a very geeky phase as kids. One that they totally grew out of. Really.

"There wasn't any last time. You could probably get out of that if you wanted to," Billy said. "I don't think we're quite that geeky." Well, not the girls, at least.

"I do have the best paladin costume ever," Tony admitted.

"Then you could show it off and impress everyone," Billy said, peering up and down the shelves to find the books about Japan. "Not that you don't already do that most of the time without a costume."

"Maybe to, like, you and Topher," Tony replied, trailing his hand over the books. Weird. "Most other people think I'm going to be a jerk at them or go crazy."

"I don't know, I don't think Warren would consider you a jerk. Or Bobby." Even when they were sober! Really!

So cruel, Billy. "That Alex kid thought I was my own dad."

"Well, this is the place where people end up going to school with their own grandfathers or something," Billy said with a wave of his hand.

"Like Ben and his entire family!"

"Exactly!" Billy said. "Are there any other surprise Starks that could end up here without you knowing?"

Tony frowned, looking at the books carefully instead of Billy. "Just the one."

Use the library for whatever you need!
