Defending Yourself [Monday, Period 1]

Like most of Max's classes, this one took place in the Danger Shop. Even if said shop was configured to look like a normal classroom.

"Welcome back. Or welcome for the first time if you're not back." Max grinned.

"Since I'm the first class you've got, I can get away with making you go through the introduction thing without it seeming tired. But don't worry, you'll get bored with it before the week is over."

Max grinned since that was okay with him.

"So. Everyone state your name, how many years you've been on the island, and tell us about any experience you've got with defending yourself. Even if the answer is 'none'. Don't worry, by the end of the semester you'll have more."

"Oh, and for next week? Everyone bring something to class that you can use to defend yourself with. Mace, or a roll of quarters, or some brass knuckles. Heck, I'll even accept a pointy stick. Or a not-so-pointy stick."

[OOC: I have, on the spur of the moment, decided to try an experiment: no sign-in sub-thread. Tell me if you hate it, love it, or didn't notice in the OOC thread!

"Um, hi, I'm Angelica," Angelica said. She was a little nervous about the class, but she couldn't deny the wisdom of knowing how better to defend herself. Emma would probably approve.

"I've been on the island since the summer," she continued. "I don't really know much about defending myself, though."

"I'm Peter, I've been on the island for less than a year," Peter ponied up, "And I have little to no self-defense experience. It's never really been a big priority."

"Hey, I'm Quinn," Quinn said. "I've been here a year and a half. I have gymnastics experience but no formal fight training."

Which was not to say she'd never been in a fight. Cheerleaders were nasty; Quinn pulled hair.

"Hey, Professor Max," Kenzi said. Her sunglasses were still on. Yesterday's hangover had been epic. "Everybody else, I'm Kenzi. I've been here six months. Umm, used hairspray to hold off Bo the Security Chick while she was gray and crazy, which worked better than you'd expect 'cause her eyes were huge." She paused, then wandered back to the point. "So, some experience. Just not anything that would take out someone like you."

Unless she cheated. Which she would.

"Hi," Hanna began when it was her turn. "I'm Hanna, and I've only been here a few months. I don't have much experience with real self-defense, but I'm totally a hair puller if it's necessary."

"Hi, I'm Mercedes Thompson and I've been on the island since May."

Okay, that was easy enough. The other? Well, as a coyote she had a fair amount of experience, but since she wasn't going there...

"Um... I guess I don't really have much experience defending myself, but I can run really fast." Really fast.

"I'm Freddie Benson," he introduced, looking a bit nervous as well. I've been here since April last year, so almost a full year. Mainly when it comes to defending myself it's more sort of... being manhandled by my friend Sam. Or the time I got mobbed by fangirls at Webicon. I... yeah, I'm not exactly good at defending myself."

Which was odd, given the seemingly fine definition in his arm muscles.

"Hi, I'm Karla," Karla said when it was her turn. "I've been on the island for three years, since the summer before my freshman year. I have a lot of experience defending myself, what with the way the island gets invaded and whatnot."

And, you know, various trips home and to other people's worlds, but why share that now?

"Surreal, and I arrived at the beginning of this summer," she said, glancing around. "I don't remember a time before my mother taught me how to fight."

"William Murdoch," William introduced himself. "I've been at the school for a year and a half now, and- I've done some boxing at my old school as well as the occasional, er," he blushed furiously, straightening his tie, "unsanctioned scrap." An admission that might be surprising to some given his rather reserved, formal personality. Definitely not a typical science nerd hobby either.

"I'm Cassidy and I've been here for a year and a half, now. I've taken this class once and a couple of people work with me on sparring from time to time."

*raises hand* No sign-up... probably not the easiest if you're having a busy day and no time to write up a listen-to-the-lecture ping or so on?

I always figured the sign-in threads were mainly for the teacher: I use them to make sure everybody who should be in a class is there, since (especially at the end of term) participation is sometimes not a good gauge. But if you don't care, it doesn't make a huge difference on this end -- it just means I have to find a way to say Quinn listened to the lecture every week :-).
