Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

The lawn in front of the school was a little bigger than it had been at picnics in the past (thank you, people with positive memories), so there was plenty of space for the blue and gold tables and chairs that got pulled out for every event. A bonfire had been lit in the middle of the lawn, for those who weren't quite prepared for the east coast in December, and there were tables set away from the crowd as well, for those who might want a more quiet place to sit.

"No, I just make sure he gets lots of mushy stuff. He seems to like it."

Actually, Gummy's expressions were entirely unreadable even to Pinkie.

"Like other babies," Dorothy said with a nod. Which was not actually something she had much experience with at all. "I suppose alligators aren't all that different from people. Or ponies or dogs."

She then asked the most pressing question on her mind. "May I ask where you're from, Miss Pie?"

"Sure!" said Pinkie.

And then she waited.

Dorothy had to smile at that little pause. Toto just cocked his little doggy head in confusion.

"Where are you from, Miss Pie?" she asked.

"I'm from Ponyville, the cutest little town in all of Equestria! Where are you from?"

"A farm in Kansas," Dorothy said. "Not really in any town, exactly. But I came here by way of Oz, which I thought might have been where you were from. It's the only place I knew of that had talking horses or even pink ones."

"Really? Do they have humans, too? Because I'd never seen one of those until I came here."

"You hadn't?" Dorothy said, surprised. Then again, more curious things she had encountered before. "Well Oz has plenty of people, too. And Munchkins and Winkies and talking trees and lions and tiger and bears," she explained.

"OoooooOOOOOOoooooo!" Pinkie was very impressed. "Equestria has lions and tigers and bears, too, and dragons and manticores and sea monsters and windigos and things, but I've never met any Munchkins or Winkies or talking trees."

"Well, they're generally friendly," Dorothy said. "Except you have to be careful about picking apples off the trees that can talk. They don't much like it and can get ever so angry if you do."

"I've never met any manticores or windigos myself. Nor any dragons. I kept hoping there would be some in Oz but I never saw any."

"Maybe they're shy? And my friend Applejack would be really sad if her trees wouldn't let her pick any of their apples. That's her family's business!"

"Oh, well, there's plenty of trees that don't raise any fuss if you pick off them," Dorothy said. "Like the lunch pail tree. But if it's a talking tree, well... let's just say they don't fight fair."

They really didn't.

"Ooo, a lunch pail tree! What a great idea!"

"They're very helpful," Dorothy agreed. And in more ways than simply providing a lunch. "One of the many wonderful things I've only ever seen in Oz."

"You should transplant one! We did that with my friend Applejack's tree Bloomberg!"

"I haven't been to Oz in three years," Dorothy admitted. "But I'll try to, if I ever get a chance. As long as it doesn't hurt the tree, of course."

"I don't know. Bloomberg never said if it hurt or not."

"That tree could talk?" Dorothy asked, since that seemed to be the implication she'd gathered.

"Oh! No. Maybe? I don't know. Applejack talked to him. . . ."

Dorothy thought about that for a moment, then shrugged. "Well, I guess I'd have to visit Equestria to find out, exactly," she decided.

"Oh that's a great idea! I could introduce you to all my friends and we could meet a dragon and maybe visit Princess Celestia in Canterlot!"

Dorothy got an excited gleam in her eye. "Well I certainly would love to do that," she said.

Some day, she might know better than to accept near-strangers offers to go visit a strange magic land.

"As long as it doesn't interfere with school, of course. I promised Ozma I'd do my best."

"Oh of course! And I have to teach."

"Well then we'll have to save that trip for another time," Dorothy said. "You're very kind to offer, Miss Pie."

She even gave her another little curtsy.

Pinkie, fortunately, knew better than to curtsy back this time, and instead inclined her head. "It was great to meet you!"
