Books. Coffee on a little wheely cart. Even some non-crumbly snacks set out on a table in the hall, with a little placard set up reading, "Do not bring near the books."

And the research continued.

"I have to say it out loud, or it doesn't really work. I've tried just saying spells in my head, but nothing happens then," Billy said. "As far as I can tell, it just has to be something I want to happen, and I have to say I want it. Like, I'd say 'I want Topher to be healed' over and over a few times, like a mantra, and then it'd happen."

"Huh," Topher said, leaning in a little as he took that in. "That's really cool. You should, um, show me sometime."

"I could show you now, maybe. Is there anything you need?" Billy asked, ever helpful. He might have liked the idea of showing off a little too.

"Like right now?" Huh. "You can't, like, magic us the answer to how to get disappeared people back, right?" Topher asked, with maybe a little bit of a wry smile.

"I wish," Billy said with a sigh. "I've tried spells to bring people back, spells to make answers appear, spells to make the cloud go away...none of it's worked though. I guess there are some limits to what I can do."

"That blows," Topher sympathized. "But we'll fix it! And it'll be good! So... um, yeah!"

So helpful, Topher. Really.

Billy laughed softly, smiling at Topher. "I'll try to stay optimistic like that if you will. Deal?"

He even felt a little bit better now. Weird, but -- better.
