Ethics [Tuesday, November 29, 2011]

Anakin'd had even more difficulties getting across the causeway this morning and was planning to leave Rory a message after class to let her know that he'd be staying in the hotel and would really prefer if she and Juliet joined him as soon as possible. Not that he knew what traveling across an unstable indimensional...whatever the causeway was...would do to a pregnant woman, but he'd noticed the board of the missing getting fuller and it would kill him to put their pictures up there.

So he'd been more than slightly distracted by current events to come up with a lesson plan that dealt in the world of the hypothetical today.

He leaned against his desk and began speaking. "Many of you have been affected by the wave of disappearances that are sweeping through various multiverses. So far, we haven't found any connections to link the people and places that have disappeared--" or a way to stop it, but Anakin wasn't going to bring up that pesky little detail. "Since we're in ethics class, I thought today might be a good time to discuss the why that might be behind this."

Even in natural disasters, people asked why. He was almost glad that the people noticing disappearances was limited: it meant televised evangelists hadn't started blaming the problem on general godlessness or some other drivel.

"Why do you think this is happening? What do you think might be behind it?" He glanced from one face to another. "There are no wrong answers here because we don't know anything. I realize that emotions are running high right now, so please try to keep this a civilized discussion."

Jack was there. Staring into space and looking completely distracted.

He was doing a pretty good job of it too.

'Because I did something wrong' wasn't helpful, and besides, as much as part of Mercy felt that way, she knew it wasn't true.

Still, she didn't have any idea what it could be and just thinking about it made her feel sick and hopeless and utterly useless.

She ducked her head and sat there silently, trying very hard not to embarrass herself by crying. Again.

Jack gave a rueful smile. "Where I'm from it's usually because someone pushed a button. Or they performed an experiment that had consequences," he said leaning back in his chair. "Though that never did anything this big."

"Lab accident: definite possibility," Hank agreed. "Or a magic spell gone wrong -- same thing. Or maybe a magic spell gone wrong IN a lab accident!!!"

"Clearly, this is all part of someone's diabolical plan," Hank answered. "We haven't gotten a ransom note, so they're probably just an evil loony who wants to destroy everything, or else maybe they're planning on building a new society on the ashes of the world. You know, the usual."

The many ways in which Hank's universe was different from a normal, sane one had already come up in conversation, right?

Angelica timidly raised her hand. "We're the only ones who noticed what was happening, right?" she said. "We remember the people who vanish when no one else does. So maybe...maybe it's an attack on us? Someone who hates Fandom?"

"The Great Spaghetti monster is hungry?" Kenzi offered. Then shrugged uncomfortably. "I have no clue."

Lex was there, if a bit too focused on the sudden charge for a thousand odd dollars worth of rum on his card to really catch the lecture.

Toby was around, though whether he was focused on what was going on was an entirely different question. He was a telepath, not an empath, but emotions running high tended to lead to anxious thoughts, which had a tendency to break though the really kind of pitiful mental barriers he had.

Kenzi glomped him. Look, after this discussion, she needed it. Maybe he needed it too. "Hi."

"Hey," Toby replied, offering up... something that could possibly be considered a smile. If you squinted.

"How you doing?" Kenzi asked, still glomped. "Any bad news for you? I'm totally avoiding finding out."

"I'm okay," Toby shrugged. "Haven't heard from Ray, but that's... pretty usual." There were times when he really did seem to embody the 'absentminded professor' stereotype. And... part of him didn't want to be the one to call, because if he did, then he'd know one way or the other. Which was fine if Ray was fine... but if he wasn't...

"Me neither. People from home, I mean." She let go a little, and studied him. "We so need to go out and stuff our faces soon, yeah?"
