Study Hall -- Tuesday, November 1st

Sarah's desk is empty save for a huge stack of papers and a plastic cauldron full of leftover candy. Sarah is nowhere to be seen, although occasionally strange growling noises can be heard from both her office down the hall and under the study hall desk.

Cole leaned in to hug her tight. "I just got your message," he said in a low voice. "Everything okay?"

"Kitty..." she whispered.

Cole pulled Phoebe into his lap, holding her fiercely. "You know? I found out last night. You were already asleep when I came back to our room and I didn't want to wake you up with bad news. I wasn't sure how to tell you...."

Phoebe clung to Cole. "Can we get out of here?"

Cole caught the nod from Angelus. "I think Angelus wants to talk to us," he said to Phoebe. "He's the one who told me about Kitty. Do you want to hear what he has to say first, or go now? He might have some new information."

Angelus was pulled out of his distraction enough to see Bel and Phoebe together. He gave Bel a nod to indicate he wouldn't mind talking to both of them, but he wasn't going to interrupt if this was the wrong time.

Cole asked Phoebe a question, then nodded to Angelus, indicating it was okay to come over.

Angelus gathered up his things, coming over to sit by them.

"Hey," he glanced at Phoebe, taking in her upset state with a look of sympathy. To Bel he said, "I'm guessing you told her?"

"Someone else told me," she said softly, still in Cole's lap. "It was the first thing I heard this morning."

"I'm sorry," Angelus said. "I know you were close. Was there anything? Anything at all? Some clue that somebody was trying to hurt her?"

Phoebe shook her head, trying to hold back the tears.

"No, everyone loved Kitty. Nobody had any reason to hurt her..."

Cole tightened his embrace around Phoebe. "We'll find whoever did it, I promise," he told her.

"I want their head, you guys. I'm going to find out who killed my friend and I'm going to do whatever I have to do...whatever the cost to me, I will find the killer..."

"Right there with you," Angelus said, his expression grim. "I wasn't as close to her as you were but I liked her. I considered her one of my own, which makes me very cranky that somebody hurt her. Cranky makes me very revenge-oriented."

"I want to help, Angelus. She was a very close friend and my former roommate. If I have to go into town alone I will find who hurt her."

"Me too," Angelus said. "But you shouldn't go alone. If this is somebody who's targeting, well, people like us I'm thinking having backup can't hurt. Take Bel, or Beka, or even me."

Angelus looked at the both of them. "How did this even happen? As far as I knew you couldn't kill or even hurt anybody in this town. As in literally. Did the spell on the town break or something?"

"Shhh...calm down, Phoebe," Cole said, stroking her hair. "I told you, we'll find who did this. Trust me, okay? I took care of the other thing, and I'll take care of this."

Phoebe leaned back into Cole. She was shaking and it was obvious that it was taking a lot out of her to keep in control.

"Promise?"

"I promise," Cole said. "And whoever did it will never touch you."

"No kidding," Angelus rubbed a tired hand over his eyes. "Honestly I can't figure this one. And believe me I'm the guy who can peg a murder motive from a hundred paces. Phoebe - " Angelus glanced at Bel, clearly asking Bel to stop him if he was crossing a line of comfort for Phoebe " - given all the, you know, problems you were having, do you think maybe this was mistaken identity?"

Phoebe froze and then her eyes went dark. "You think...they killed her...thinking she was me..." Phoebe looks horrified. "Oh...oh god..."

"No." Belthazor looked at Angelus and shook his head. To Phoebe, he said, "That wasn't it, sweetheart. I told you that was all taken care of. The one responsible for that didn't do that, I promise you."

Phoebe looked from Angelus to Cole and then shuddered. "How could anyone hurt her?"

Angelus nodded to indicate he'd caught Bel's signal to drop it.

"No idea," Angelus said. "Far as I knew she didn't have any enemys. Christ, weird as this town maybe she accidentally pissed off a rogue member of PETA who didn't like her keeping a dragon for a pet."
