Library [11/25]

Wesley was researching. This probably wasn't a huge surprise. Something strange was afoot, so he could be found at the front desk, poring over a stack of books several feet high and copying potentially relevant passages over into his notes. It was the Watcher way, damnit.

Wesley hugged her back, surprised to find that he actually needed it. "Of course," he murmured. "Is he all right? I mean -- of course he isn't -- but is he -- managing?"

Karla nodded, clinging tightly. "He's...not crying as much anymore. He's kind of lost, though."

And alternating between clinging to Karla and clinging to Thor.

"Sometimes he seems okay and then it hits him all over again." Which Karla remembered from when she'd lost her parents. The first few days were never easy. "I think he might be up for company tomorrow, though."

Wesley nodded, already planning to stop by.

"I'm sorry," he said urgently. "I didn't -- I shouldn't have -- I thought it'd be easier, not to have to call my father, but..."

Yeah, hadn't worked the way he'd hoped.

"It's not--I don't blame you, and I don't think he does, either," Karla said. She'd let go of Wesley eventually. Really.

...Maybe.

"At least you were there, with him. He wasn't alone. That would have been worse, that he'd find out and be all by himself. So thank you. For making sure he wasn't alone."

She could take her time. This hug was working wonders on him too.

"Of course," he said sincerely. "I just -- I didn't think. And -- the scotch -- that was... appropriate? I remembered -- after Katniss --"

Look, validation would be helpful in this situation. He wasn't exactly on firm footing here.

"I think it helped," Karla said. "Sometimes, it's easier when you can just go a little numb. It doesn't make it go away, but it makes those first few hours bearable. After that, you get a little distance, maybe things get easier to deal with--I don't think there was any more that you could have done, Wesley."

Unless he could have waved a hand and reversed what was happening. And she didn't doubt that if he could do it, he would have.

That was reassuring, and Wesley nodded. "Right," he said, making to extricate himself. "Right. Thank you. I didn't... that is to say, I'm not... I haven't much experience with this. Really, I was hoping to emulate you."

Well. That was mortifying.

Karla flushed a little as she stepped back. "I--oh. You did?" There was the faintest hint of a pleased smile hovering at the corners of her mouth. "That means a lot to me to hear," she said. "But mostly...I just appreciate you being there for Warren. More than anything else, that's what he needed, I think."

That's mostly what anyone needed during those times. Someone there, who cared.

And scotch.

Scotch and caring: two hallmarks of the grieving process.

"I'm glad I could help," Wesley said honestly. "I -- would it -- should I come by sometime this week? Do you think he'd...?"

"I think he's appreciate that, yes," Karla said, nodding. "He'll need to be reminded that he hasn't lost everything." She wrinkled her nose a little in thought. "And he'll get to the point where he'll feel like he has to do something, but lack the focus to figure it out. Having someone nearby to help him come up with stuff will make him feel better."
