Library [11/25]

Wesley was researching. This probably wasn't a huge surprise. Something strange was afoot, so he could be found at the front desk, poring over a stack of books several feet high and copying potentially relevant passages over into his notes. It was the Watcher way, damnit.

It was such a shame Tara didn't know Miley. That was probably the best chance she had at getting rid of these all in one go.

"That's reasonable," he granted, surveying the bear with faint disgust. "I mean, really. Good lord."

"I'll set them out at the next welcome picnic and hope the new freshmen take them," Tara said, running a hand over her hair. she could only stay so interested in the bears for so long, really. "So, is anything new since Wednesday?"

"Not terribly much in the way of research, I'm afraid," Wesley said, taking that as a cue to switch back to book-mode. "Have you found anything?"

Tara shook her head. "I'm still where I was. Everything that I can find that could do this would leave some kind of ... trace, I guess? And I don't like that it can cross dimensions. We can't even tell where it started."

"That's what I was just saying to Ender," Wesley said, nodding. "I've found a number of things -- demons, hellgods -- that might be capable of this sort of magic, but whatever it is would have to leave a trace, some sort of... disturbance of mystical energy, in each dimension that was affected, and I haven't noticed anything. Have you?"

Tara shook her head. "Not me," she said unhappily. "Wait. Go back to the part about the hellgods. I pretty much figure, if it's magic, it has to be a god, right? Nothing else is big enough."

"That does seem the most likely," he agreed. "There are other alternatives -- a reality-changer and wibble-inducer named Cyvus Vail, for instance -- but I can't imagine anything with less than godlike power managing to affect quite so many universes. It doesn't make sense."

Tara nodded. "And if it's a god, it probably has a weakness," she pointed out. "Might be easier to beat than if it's a whole bunch of ... beings."

"Now if they'd only just document them a bit more," Wesley half-joked, turning pages and regarding the less-than-helpful information within with frustration.

"I think I'm burning out," Tara admitted. "Not forever or anything, but ... all the little horny guys are starting to look like all the other little horny guys. I actually mistook an M'Fashnik for a troll god earlier."

A very embarrassing error, yes.

"I confused large and small soul-eaters in a text this morning," Wesley admitted with a near-smile. "I've been blaming the lighting."

"We need to pace ourselves," she said more seriously. "Or get better lighting."

"I suspect the former might be healthier," he said, then added teasingly, "but them, the lighting is a bit bothersome even on the best of days. I'll file a request."
