Professor Chaucer: Office Hours

Chaucer will be in his office today for anyone with questions, complaints, or really good gossip. He wouldn't be averse to a cup of espresso, either.

Hey, Geoff. Thanks for talking to my mom Saturday.

"Hello, Angela! You're very welcome -- it was a pleasure meeting her, and your sister." He smiles. "Did they enjoy their visit?"

Angela sticks her hands in her pockets. "I guess. There was some bad news from back home, so ... I guess it went as well as it could, you know?"

"I'm sorry to hear that, Angela. What sort of bad news?" He motions her to a chair. "If you don't think it's too nosy of me to ask."

"If I didn't weant you to ask, I wouldn't have mentioned it," Angela says a seat.

She sighs. "My parents are getting separated. Apparently my dad is dating this ... this woman he works with."

"Oh, God, Angela. I'm so sorry to hear that." Geoff moves his chair closer and takes her hand. "I know it's a strange thing to offer, but if there's anything I can do...if you need someone to talk to about it, or anything else. You know all you have to do is ask."

Angela squeezes his hand. "Thanks. I mean, it's not a huge shock -- I knew my dad was always flirting with this woman -- but I never thought anything would actually happen. I can't believe he did this to my mom."

"And on a completely and totally different note? I got back together with Marty. So the inside of my head is just this merry-go-round. I can't get it to slow down long enough to figure out how I feel about anything."

Geoff looks sympathetic and listens to Angela talk about her family troubles. But when he hears her mention getting back with Marty, he grins and pulls her into a tight hug.

"Angela, I'm so glad to hear that! You and Marty both seemed so...unhappy while you were apart. And I didn't want to push you to reconcile but -- I'm really glad you did."

"Thanks. I'm glad we did too," Angela admits. "The tricky thing is, we didn't really work everything out, you know? We just decided loving each other mattered more." She shrugs, clearly hoping that will stay true.

"What's going on with your love life? If it isn't completely inappropriate to ask a teacher that."

Angela's question about his love life causes Geoff to blush slightly. "I'm...not really sure I can say I have a love life right now. I have been seeing someone, we've gone out a few times. ~~And there are also my unresolved issues with Ten and I've for some reason taken up with one member of a biker gang.~~ But that's all, really. It's still...relatively casual."

Angela smiles. "Casual sounds good for you right now, Geoff. I thought Paige was .... too much, too soon, you know? You could probably use a break from that."

She stands and picks up her bookbag. "I should get to journalism. It was nice talking to you, though. See you around."

Returning her smile, Geoff nods in agreement. "Yeah, I do too, Angela. I'm going to just take everything nice and slow right now."

He stands as she prepares to leave and gives her another hug. "It was nice talking to you, too. Enjoy your class."
