Library, Sunday 11/20

Raven was hoping for another quiet shift today so she could sneak out to the auditions at the Boards. She wasn't sure what she could offer since Azarath had no winter holidays, but she was spending some time looking for holiday songs from Earth online.

It did serve to distract her from worrying about Jono (though she couldn't wait to see his face when she gave him back his belongings). And from worrying about Bobby, since she had finally gotten Warren's message. She called Bobby and left him a voicemail, hoping this was some sort of mistake.

Before she slips out in the afternoon.

"Raven," Scully greeted her, then asked, "Is there a section on disappearances? And interdimensional contact? Or both?"

Worry crossed Raven's face. "You have noticed people disappearing as well?" she said. "Just vanishing, or has it been as if they never existed?"

Scully blinked, then said with even more concern, "Peter Bishop left Claudia a very upsetting message, a good-bye, and now we can't get through to him. Are you saying this is happening to other people?"

"There are people from Karla's home that no one but her seems to remember," Raven said, frowning. "And the same thing has happened to our friend Dinah, and other friends as well. And yesterday while we were visiting Jono's home world, we saw a portrait of a group of people that did not include two that it should have. And the person we spoke to there could not remember those two people. It was as if they never existed there, but they did, I am certain of it."

Alternate dimensions were confusing things, but she'd seen Warren in that world, and Jono had mentioned his Bobby more than once. Leech should have known their names.

Scully felt chills. "How long has this been happening?" She took a breath, trying to connect the mental dots. "Peter left Claudia that message almost two weeks ago."

"I do not know," Raven said, shaking her head. "Yesterday was the first I heard of such things, when I spoke to Karla. But I was not feeling well earlier this week, so I was as they say 'out of the loop.'"

She was still feeling tired, but she was trying to ignore it.

"Research," Scully said with determination. "More data." She tilted her head to study Raven. "And I could get you some tea?" Doctor instincts kicked in too.

"Karla could perhaps give you more details, since most of what I know has come from her," Raven said. "But I will also see what I can find in the library for you."

She typed some keywords into the library computer, and as she waited to see what would come up on the screen, she smile at Scully. "Thank you, but I am all right," she said. "I had tea this morning. I have just been tired."

"All right. But if it keeps up, you know where to find me," Scully said, smiling a little. She frowned. "I haven't checked with my home in a while. I just go across the Causeway to visit Mulder and my mother. I should probably do that soon too."

"I have no one to check in with in my mother's home world," Raven said. Because her mother sucked. "But I have not investigated Azarath recently to see if anything has changed. I will have to do that soon."

What was left of Azarath, at least. She'd have no way of knowing if a person had been wiped away, but if the ruins had changed, she'd see it.

Scully gave Raven a considering look. "You can still teleport places? Nothing's changed with that?" Did that mean something? Well, file it under 'data to be explored' until more came clear. "Could you maybe try to find Peter's world, if you haven't been there before? Not if it's dangerous to you, though...."

"I am still able to teleport," Raven said. She frowned a little herself, then decided to confide in Dana, much as she didn't place her trust in non-magical healing.

"It feels...different," she said. "It is hard to explain just how, but the netherverse, which I pass through when I teleport, feels less vivid. Not shockingly so. It is very subtle."

Scully leaned on the counter, thinking furiously, trying to put it together. "Connections, maybe? Maybe something in between worlds is effecting the others. That makes it harder for you? Would that effect the worlds themselves?" She bit. "Or Portalocity? I've noticed a lot of very angry computer traffic about them recently."

"My ability to teleport can be thwarted," Raven said. Magic had bound her to Fandom in the vampire-ruled world, and it was more difficult when she was unfamiliar with a place or didn't have someone with her who could help her lock in on the location.

"But it is magical, not technological, so it would have to be something very powerful to affect both me and Portalocity." Though Portalocity was clearly inferior to her own abilities.

Of course it was!

Scully had taken out a notebook and was writing all this down now, next to her notes about Peter. "Right. Interdimensional books. There has to be some kind of -- I don't know. Natural phenomena, maybe, that's widespread and effecting the regions you travel through, and how Portalocity works." She took a breath, then gave Raven another worried look. "You probably shouldn't go alone if you do teleport somewhere, Raven. I'd hate to think of you stranded in between, or hurt. I'd say don't do it at all, but... who knows if I'm right." Who indeed. Who did know anything about this? She was going to have to talk to some of the faculty, see if any of them were experts.

"Karla was with me yesterday, and neither of us suffered any lingering ill effects," Raven said. Well. Aside from feeling dizzy for a moment afterwards.

She glanced at the computer screen. "We do have several books on interdimensional travel in the commerce, communications, transport section," she said. "Some seem to be technical, some theoretical. There are also related books in the physics section, and magical arts as well."

"The physics ones. I have a better shot of understanding those first," Scully decided. She smiled at Raven. "Magic for later. It still makes my head hurt."

"I would say the same for physics," Raven said, returning the smile. "Magic makes much more sense to me."

As you do.

Scully was reading books on interdimensional travel and physics, and drawing patterns in her notebook that explained how it worked. Trying to find something in common between magic and physics again.
