The Fifteen Labors of Fandom, Session 9, Period 1
Hercules had constructed a very special surprise for the class today. As they gathered in a normal classroom, they would find all sorts of art supplies on tables awaiting them.
"Today your labor is to make cards," Hercules said with a little smile. "Cards for orphaned children who live at Lethe Children's Hospital, a personal passion of mine."
He dimmed the lights and started... a slideshow. Not a PowerPoint presentation, and honest to goodness slideshow. The first slide just showed an island beach, inland was a lush, green forest.
"At a time when I was more blessed with Olympian gold, I founded a place on a hidden island off the coast of Greece. It was this that became Lethe Children's Hospital, a place for the children who could not find homes elsewhere."
He clicked over to the next slide, to a group of children -- one a cyclops, one a little centaur girl holding a little three-headed puppy, one girl who had a multitude of snakes for legs, and so on and so forth.
"Many would label these children monsters, but it is very, very rare that a child is truly monstrous. These are the cast-off children of gods and demigods, the product of so many one-night stands that I am sad to say Olympians are notorious for."
He clicked over to the next slide, another group of children, except in hospital gowns in what looked like a sterile hospital setting. "And unfortunately for some, their godly parentage is a curse that will very possibly cut their lives short, or their lives will be forever in need of medical aid."
He clicked over to the final slide, which showed a statue of himself (in an outfit that looked more like a professional wrestler in trunks than any other outfit he had worn to class), holding a little centaur girl on his shoulder.
"In what may seem like a token gesture, I want you all to create cards to the children of Lethe. Something heartfelt, something genuine. For many of these children, a bit of affection from a stranger will go a long way. When you finish your card, I would like you to place it in the big box next to my desk. If you wish to make another after that, I would think that a fine use of your time as well. This is your labor of the day."
