Tropes and Scope [Class 6, Period Three]

Today, when students walked into class, they'd find that the Danger Shop was programmed to look like an island with a small boat wrecked ashore.

"The deserted island," Belle greeted them, looking a little out of place in her blue gown, though she had a parasol to shield herself from the glaring sun. "So popular in fiction, so unrealistic in real life. Generally, we see four different versions of this trend -- the one-man island, which is a smaller island than this, usually with just one or two occupants and a single palm tree, often featured in cartoons and other visual media; the treasure island, where pirates seek their fortune and find out whether X marks the spot; the island of monsters, where characters are trapped with their foes against their will, with no means of escape.

"Thankfully, we're not on any of those. We're on a traditional castaway island. Most characters who end up on a deserted island -- there's no such thing as a desert island, by the way -- are shipwrecked, or otherwise abandoned. Characters must fight for survival, determine their leaders, face whatever might inhabit the wild, and ultimately, find a way off the island, whether by rescue or their own ingenuity."

She turned and faced the class with a smile. "And that's where you come in, today. I want you to figure out whether you'd try to get off the island, and implement your strategy, or whether you'd attempt to adapt to island life -- how and why? Play around, and give me your answer by the end of class. You can work in groups or pairs if you'd like, or go it solo."

[APPARENTLY I AM ALSO 'SOME USERS.' JFC I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO POST THIS SINCE LIKE 12:30.]

Oh boy. Petra was just going to...try not to be noticed. Which was hard when you were 5'11" and you'd worn heels to class today.

Weirdly, Gabrielle felt right at home in this scenario. (Implausible jury-rigged devices? All manner of defiance of continuity and logic? Who knew she'd unknowingly feel at home under those circumstances?) All the bamboo and thatched roofs? Reminded her of the Amazon village. Or her own village (some days). Or a lot of villages she'd passed through. Yes, in Greece. Hush.

If nobody stopped her, she'd spend the entire class period trying to figure out exactly how many uses you could come up with for a coconut.

. . . not dirty, actually. This time.

"You can drink the juice inside," Rilla offered. "I learned that from one of the sailors down at the dock at home who'd been shipwrecked."

So far, Gabrielle had come up with 'load into a makeshift trebuchet,' 'go bowling,' 'play like a drum,' and 'use as a head on a scarecrow,' and now she was peeling the fibers off the outside of the hull one by one, wondering if they were worth the effort to turn into some kind of twine.

"You can?" She shook the coconut experimentally, then peered at the hull, frowning. "Too bad coconuts came before the invention of those soda can tops."

Rilla nodded thoughtfully. "I don't suppose they'd crack if we dropped them from the top of the tree?"

Squall spent his time examining the wreckage to see how much of it was salvageable.

Ryan wasted no time in retrieving coconuts and breaking them open for their liquid. She missed fresh coconut water.

Richie was feeling lazy and late. He was going to sit back and relax for a while. Laying down on the beach seemed like a good plan for the moment. Odds were pretty good someone else here had a good plan for getting off the pretend island. He'd be happy to help with that if he heard about it. After he spent a little time as a beach bum.

"Is a rescue reasonable to expect?" Squall asked. "Is there someone who knows approximately where we are, and is likely to come look for us?"

Re: Give your answer [Tropes 6]

"Then I wait for them," he replied. "The first priorities are to procure clean water and food, and then build a temporary shelter. If I still haven't been rescued after a week or so, then the next order of business will be to either repair the wrecked boat or build a new one. How far are we, approximately, from civilization? A larger distance to travel will need a larger, sturdier boat."

"If there's food and water, you should stay on the island," Tara offered. "Th-that's what they always say about getting lost hiking, right? That you should stay where you end up so you don't make things worse on the people trying to find you?"

"I've actually done this in real life," Petra said, "so I don't know if my answer would be very helpful. It was kind of crazy."

"I would totally stay. It's easy to survive on a tropical island if you know what to look for," said Ryan when she wasn't sipping on fresh coconut water.

I vote that we build a fire and roast Frank over a spit in retaliation for the varnish errors.
