Today the students would find themselves in the Danger Shop instead of the usual classroom: this time in a setting up to look like a house, with comfortable sofas and chairs to sit on in the living room and fully stocked kitchen behind it, and a trap door leading to the basement hiding under the rug.

...didn't everyone have that in their house?

When class began, Anakin came in through the door. "Today we talk about lying. Kant believed that any lie, no matter how small, was a violation of one's dignity. I, personally, am beginning to think that Kant came from a magical bubble land where he'd spent his life swaddled in cotton candy, but some of you might believe he has a point."

Anakin certainly didn't think so, though.

"Depending on how you signed into class--either with a one or a two--depends upon how this scenario will play out for you. If you are a one, this is your house and one of the twos is hiding from the authorities in your basement. In a minute, several armed stormtroopers--think police with absolutely no sense of humor--will be coming to the door. If they find your classmate, they will take them away and kill them. Ones, you have to decide if you will lie and say you have no idea where your classmate is. Twos, your job is to persuade your classmate not to sell you out. If they get caught lying, they'll be killed as well. If they turn you in, it's possible they're receive a monetary reward."

He clapped his hands to begin. "You have three minutes until the authorities arrive."

What a fun exercise for so early in the morning!

Juliet frowned for a long long moment, trying to remember if Anakin had given them a reason.

She didn't think he had, so she improvised.

"I'm in trouble," she began, "for ... speaking truth to power. But part of it is a misunderstanding. Just let me hide for a little while. As soon as it's straightened out I'll be very grateful."

"That sounds awfully vague to me." It was possible Peter was enjoying his newfound power. Just a little. "Maybe you're just some slip of a girl willing to tell me anything not to get killed."

"What? No! Cross my heart, it's for real," Juliet said. And then she scrunched up her eyes and tried very hard to cry.

"You really won't help?"

"You're not really making a big case for yourself right now," he pointed out. "Celebrities, and an affluent brother who won't even step in to help you. None of that weighs up to having my head cut off if you squeal."

"Why would I tattle if you saved my life?" Juliet wondered, then went back to the fake crying.

This was so dumb. In the real world she would totally be able to buy him off.

"Because they'd cut you a better deal?" Peter offered, starting to wonder about this one. "Look, I don't have any tissues."

"It's not real crying anyhow," Juliet sniffled. Because that probably wasn't obvious enough. "You're being a jerk."

"Welcome to the real world," Peter said, shrugging. "Only stupid people are going to take 'I can give you money and influence!' at face value. Clever people know you're desperate and would say anything. I'm just trying to stick to the simulation."

"But in the real world, either my brother would get me out of this or you'd know who I was," Juliet pouted. "This is dumb."

She sighed and tried to slip back into character. "Okay. If I give you my watch as a start, will that be enough to get you to try to lie?"

Peter sighed. "I don't care about your watch, or your money," he said. "What I care about is why this family of yours hasn't come to your rescue yet."

Hey, there might be prime blackmail material in that, even if she was killed.

Juliet wanted badly to protest that they would too come, but she managed to stay within the stimulation.

"Probably the same reason they didn't come to visit us at school," she said dryly. "Everybody is busy. They didn't know I was in trouble until it was too late, and now I need a place to hide until the worst of it blows over. Please?"
