Today the students would find themselves in the Danger Shop instead of the usual classroom: this time in a setting up to look like a house, with comfortable sofas and chairs to sit on in the living room and fully stocked kitchen behind it, and a trap door leading to the basement hiding under the rug.

...didn't everyone have that in their house?

When class began, Anakin came in through the door. "Today we talk about lying. Kant believed that any lie, no matter how small, was a violation of one's dignity. I, personally, am beginning to think that Kant came from a magical bubble land where he'd spent his life swaddled in cotton candy, but some of you might believe he has a point."

Anakin certainly didn't think so, though.

"Depending on how you signed into class--either with a one or a two--depends upon how this scenario will play out for you. If you are a one, this is your house and one of the twos is hiding from the authorities in your basement. In a minute, several armed stormtroopers--think police with absolutely no sense of humor--will be coming to the door. If they find your classmate, they will take them away and kill them. Ones, you have to decide if you will lie and say you have no idea where your classmate is. Twos, your job is to persuade your classmate not to sell you out. If they get caught lying, they'll be killed as well. If they turn you in, it's possible they're receive a monetary reward."

He clapped his hands to begin. "You have three minutes until the authorities arrive."

What a fun exercise for so early in the morning!

Topher was probably not going to be popular in this exercise, what with having the full intention of selling out the twos and all. Oops.

Oh look, here was a two who really didn't want to be sold out.

"I don't want to die," she said to Topher, trying to play her role. "Please don't tell them I'm here if they come in."

"Sorry," said Topher, not looking the least bit sorry. In a deep, movie-announcer-type voice, he informed her, "This world's a scary place, and you picked the wrong basement to hide in."

Angelica wasn't expecting that. "But that's wrong," she said. "I know you don't really know me, but how can you just let them kill me when I haven't done anything wrong?"

"How do I know you haven't done anything?" Topher pointed out. "Why are they looking for you, anyway?"

Fortunately (or unfortunately), it wasn't hard at all for Angelica to come up with a story. "They hate me because of what I am," she said unhappily. "Because I'm different, not like them. I haven't done anything to them, I swear!"

"Yeaaaaah, but you could be crazy-different," Topher insisted. "They seem pretty pissed..."

"I'm not crazy and I'd never hurt anybody!" Angelica insisted. "Those people just hate mutants for no reason! All I want to do is grow up and go to college and get married and they want to kill me! Please, you have to help me!"

It was possible she was getting into this a little more than she intended.

Topher surveyed how emotional she was.

Considered it.

"Nah."

Without realizing it, Angelica started to radiate heat and light as she got overly worked up. Not enough to hurt, unless Topher were unwise enough to touch her. "Why not?" she demanded.

"'Cause," he said, shrugging. Though he was looking around to see the source of the heat and light. "They're gonna pay me to turn you in. Sorry, bro."

The heat and light was definitely all focused around Angelica. "All you care about is money?" she said angrily. "Not somebody's life? How can you be so selfish!"

"Wow. You're getting a little too into this, dude. Take a step back. You're not really gonna die."

Of course he would break the fourth wall.

That did make Angelica realize she was losing control, and she took a deep breath and struggled to calm down. "Shows what you know," she muttered, then more loudly asked, "Would you really do that to someone?"

"Yep."

Professionally, and at the risk of sort of ending the world. No shame.

"You're a real jerk," Angelica sniffed.

"Been told that."

"I hope someday you have to count on someone to protect you," Angelica said, shaking her head. She was mad at herself for almost losing control of her powers, but then again, Topher sucked.

And since she didn't want to waste any more time or get upset again, she turned away. That was enough for the assignment, right?

"No, thanks!" Topher called after her as she went. Because he was a jackass.
