Library, Sunday 10/02

All things considered, the good was definitely outweighing the bad this weekend. True, things had been tense between Karla and Surreal's visitor (understatement of the year), and there was no sign of her mother (which she hadn't held out much hope for), but she hadn't sensed the presence of her brothers or any other unwelcome visitors, and best of all, Jono was visiting.

She really didn't want to tear herself away to go open the library, but she couldn't shirk her duties either. And anyone coming to visit the library today might just get an empathic taste of the good mood she was projecting.

Seifer was there to waste some time, and change out some of the books he was reading. The sci-fi stuff that they had in some worlds was just awesome. The thrillers were even better.

"Hey. I hear I missed some fun at the beach yesterday." He'd had to listen to the podcast a few times to hear it all without laughing.

"Hello, Seifer," Raven said without a trace of the little tweak of awkwardness she felt because she hadn't seen him since finding out about him and Jono. "I am not certain I would call it 'fun,' however."

He wasn't going to think about it, even if it had been an interesting experience.

Seifer winced as he set down the books. "I take it that things were glossed over on the radio."

There would be no thinking of it, Seifer. Not while Raven could pick up on your emotions.

"It was a tense situation," she said, "but it seems to have been resolved for now." She hoped, at least. With luck the squirrels hadn't made things worse.

He thought it was interesting! That's a good thing!

"That's good. Fights on island are never a good thing during Parent's Weekend, I'm guessing." And he would have totally sicced Ifrit on someone for the girls.

"I have seen my share of threats of violence" -- mostly from family members -- "during such weekends in the past," Raven agreed, nodding. "Thankfully none of them have come to blows, though I certainly would do my best to defuse any such situations."

"Seems like the island does it's best to traumatize us during these weekends so we won't realize how messed up some of our teachers are."

Like Madrox. And Deadpool.

"I am not certain I entirely agree with that logic, but yes, many of our teachers are...very unusual," Raven said. She was just more polite about pointing out the crazy.

"Crazy. The word is Cuh-ray-zee." Because, yeah. "Even the administration admits it."

Just look at the name of the class.

"You mean Professor Madrox's class?" Raven said. "I am glad I am not in that one. Are you? I do not approve of his attempt to antagonize Professor Skywalker."

There would have been epic scolding.

"Yeah. I think someone may have shot him in the head a few too many times." Antagonizing Anakin was probably a good indicator of that.

"I would offer to try to heal his damaged mind but Professor Skywalker does not think it would do any good," Raven said, frowning.

"See, I don't think he's actually damaged, no matter what I say. I think he's just... like that." Maybe it was a side effect of being able to make duplicates.

Raven shook her head. "Then I just hope he leaves Professor Skywalker alone now," she said. "And that he does not inadvertently cause harm to his students."

Licking doorknobs? Gross.

"Yeah, I don't see that happening, at all." It was highly likely a student would try to take Jamie out first.

"It was fun throwing him at things though."

"You threw him...?" She shook her head again. "No, I do not think I wish to know. So other than that class, how have you been? Have you adjusted to life in Fandom?"

"Live action Angry Birds," Seifer explained. "Well. I'm waiting for the sky to fall since Squall and I are getting along. And I haven't hit Rinoa's dad yet!"

That was a bright side.

"Her father is visiting this weekend?" Raven said. "Did you receive any visitors? I have been fortunate that none of my brothers came, but I am very grateful that Jono came to visit instead."

She wasn't going to ask about the angry birds and what Jamie had done to make them so upset.

Some day, someone was going to show Raven those crazy internet games.

It wouldn't be Seifer.

"Yeah, Squall's too. I lucked out and didn't get any visitors." He wasn't really happy about that, in fact he felt pretty crappy about it, but it was easier to pretend he was.

Empath, Seifer. Empath.

"I am sorry," she said quietly, picking up on his unhappiness despite his words. "I had hoped that my mother would come, but.... I understand what it is to be disappointed."

There was a pause while he remembered a few things he'd picked up, and then he shrugged.

"No big deal. I can't expect them to want to hang around the traitor. Wouldn't be good for their careers," he said trying to play it off.

"Traitor?" Raven repeated. "Because of what happened with Adel? You were not yourself, you were controlled. That is not fair to you."

"People don't care. I was the one in the public eye, I'm the one they saw." He shrugged again, shoving around some books on the counter. "So I'm the one they blame."

Raven reached out to put her hand over his, sending a gentle pulse of comfort. "It is not fair," she said again, realizing again how lucky she was after everything that had happened to Trigon. "I know what it is it be forced to obey another's commands and harm your friends. Even if you are not in control, there is so much guilt. But for others to hold you accountable for actions that were not truly your own...I am so sorry."

Seifer would admit he was a bit greedy for affection right now, but he wasn't about to admit it. "You don't have to apologize. I should probably be the one apologizing after the crazy weekend."

"About what happened with Jono?" Raven said. "I had a momentary struggle with jealousy, but I know that was not truly you, either. Nor was it truly Jono. I was not myself that weekend, either, and it would be wrong to blame you for your actions then. There is no apology necessary."

"So, that means I shouldn't feel at all guilty?" he asked with a grin.

Raven wasn't quite sure what to make of that grin. "No," she said. "Though I know that is easier said than done. Your true self is not responsible for the actions that version of you took that weekend."

He chuckled and shook his head. "Just joking with you, Raven. I won't mention the boyfriend's alternate's abilities in bed."

"I would appreciate it if you would not," Raven said indignantly. "That is not for you to truly know."

"Well, technically I wasn't with Jono. It was like, being stuck in a bad play," he tried to point out.

"I understand that," Raven said. "I have the same sort of memories of my own actions. But that does not mean I wish to know about what you and he did. He told me that you had an...encounter, and that is enough."

"Yes, ma'am." There was a nod, and then Seifer held up the books. "I should probably check these out and go bother Squall now."

"You do not need to call me ma'am, Raven will do," she said, taking the books and scanning them into the computer under Seifer's name.

"Is there anything else I can help you with?" she said, giving the books back to Seifer.

Seifer really shouldn't ask for a book that would explain to Squall why watching porn with your girlfriend's ex wasn't exactly done, but he doubted they made it.

It was still amusing and slightly confusing to think about. "Yeah. Do you have a book that will explain Squall?"

Raven wouldn't be sure just where that book would fall under the Dewey Decimal System if it did exist.

"I am not sure what you mean," she said. "Explain what about Squall?"

"Any of him, all of him. How his brain works?" Because he was betting he could turn it into a best seller back home.

"Sometimes I think he's cool with me being here, other times I think he's just an inch from running me through with one of his swords."

"He is difficult for me to understand," Raven admitted. "I sometimes sense his feelings are very strong, but he masks them. But he has become more open about them. I do not know him well enough to know the reasons why, however. I have only glimpses into his life."

"You've gotten more than the rest of us. For a long time after I first met him, I thought he couldn't talk."

And there was that whole standing in the rain thing. "Sometimes, I wish I was a telepath."

"He is very taciturn, yes," Raven agreed. "Though with people like that, when they do speak, it is usually to say something important."

She gave Seifer a curious look. "Telepathy can be more trouble than you might expect," she said. "Do you wish to read Squall's mind?"

"Sometimes, when he does that staring off into space thing, and you know he's having this long rambling conversation in his head, yeah."

Just so he could know what conversation had him saying 'whatever'.

"I have the advantage of being able to sense emotions, but not the reason behind them," Raven said. "It has made me wish sometimes that I could know the thoughts as well, so that I would better understand."

As you do.
