The Elements of Friendship, Thursday, Period 1

The Danger Shop today was programmed to resemble a barren, rocky field, nothing but dirt and rocks as far as the eye could see. Above the field drifted a bright pink hot air balloon, and in the balloon basket sat Pinkie, peering down at the students with a broad grin, one hoof braced on a megaphone.

"WELCOME STUDENTS!" she crowed. "Today's an easy one! This field is full of pretty pretty gemstones! Grab a gemstone finder," she pointed to a pile of fake unicorn horns on headbands, "and get digging! Whoever digs up the most wins!"

[ooc: OCD ~~on its way~~ is up and ready!]

"What? Hats don't see!" And then there was flailing. "AHHH STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT! You go! The rest stay!"

"Put on the horn," Scully said, "And you'll see I'm not lying." She paused. "And you don't need us. And our shrieky loud voices and whistles and I think you can hear all of us getting ready to scream...."

"Fine, give me the hat!" The Diamond dog made grabby hands. "And no screaming, or you all pull carts!"

Scully handed over the hat, and said carefully, "And now we're leaving." And started walking toward the exit. "All of us."

"You go, shrieky!" insisted the Diamond dog. "The rest stay." It put on the horn hat thing, then flailed. "It doesn't work! Lies! Lies!"

Scully grimaced, then whistled again. "We all leave! And... hmm." She frowned. "I bet it works if you go back up higher. Come on. You guys too."

Eeeeeeeeeeee!

"LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIES!" wailed the Diamond dog, and it flopped over onto its back and flailed around like a child having a tantrum.

Really, it was astonishing something like this could exist anywhere.

"Seriously?" Scully said in disbelief, then paused. "How old are you guys? C'mon. It's nice up there. Pinkie's waving from a balloon. Come ooooooon."

The flailing and shrieking continued. The Diamond dog clearly wasn't listening.

Scully... had no idea how to deal with this. Except to whistle one last time. "STOP IT. Please?"

The Diamond dog stopped. "You will be quiet and dig for gems now?"

"No. I am leaving, and taking everyone with me, and I think..." She marched determinedly toward them, and reached for their collar. "You should come with me."

"No! You will not make the Diamond dogs slaves!"

Scully scratched under one chin. "How about friends?"

"Human would want to be . . . friends with Diamond Dogs?"

"If the diamond dogs would stop yelling, and the human stops whistling, then that would work, wouldn't it?" Scully coaxed. "You might like it up there. You can always come back, if you don't."

"Friends!" the Diamond dog declared. "Now dig for friendly gems!"

Somewhere in here was a blatant failure to communicate.

"No," Scully said firmly. Deciding that treating them like four-year-olds was how to start. Now that there was a way to make them shriek, things were more equitable. "Now we go outside. We'll come back and *both* dig, maybe. It's my turn now. Friends take turns."

"Okay, humans take turns digging up gems."

"...with the diamond dogs," Scully said. They really weren't getting this, were they. She turned scritched one behind the ear. "Scritches. Then up. Then digging. Okay? The hats work up there."

The scritched Diamond dog's leg thumped in time to the scritching, then it started flailing again.

"MAGIC! HUMAN HAS LEG FLAILY SCRITCHY MAGIC!"

"And I will share the magic--- which means you get some, and you get some, and you get some-- if you come up top with me," Scully said. "And all of us go. And you stop trying to tell us what to do."

Maybe that was too many things at once?

"We don't need magics! We only want gems!"

Scully scritched another one. "You're sure?"

The Diamond dog she was scritching at shrieked and pulled away. "Yes, sure! You go away, now! Friendly go away!"

They clearly did not know what to think of this scritching business.
