Basic Strategy, Monday, Period 4

As the students took their seats, they would each find a book being rather firmly placed on their desks by a teacher who had switched to modern dress for the week, though he wasn't quite sure he understood the point of his tie.

"Books," Tyrion informed them, once he'd finished the process of handing them out, "are the greatest tool there is in sharpening a mind. You may not think you need a sharp mind; perhaps you can get by on charging at things with a sword. And certainly that will work for some of you some of the time. For the rest of the time -- and especially for ensuring you have a properly full mind in a time of crisis -- there's nothing like reading."

"I am aware that there are other ways to obtain and store information on the island, but from what I can tell plain words on paper retain some popularity. Let's stick to those for the day."

"Your assignment is a simple one. Take the book I've handed you at random. Read as much as you can from it in the next half-hour. Then turn to the person next to you and have a discussion about what you read, and how you can see using the information in the future. And, sometime over the next week, pick out a book from the library or bookstore that talks about something you know nothing about, and be prepared to explain it to me when we next meet."

"If you cannot read, please let me know and we'll work out an alternate assignment." Probably it would be learning how to read, but that was a detail.

Toby could agree with Tyrion's perspective when it came to books. The internet was... interesting enough, but still unfamiliar enough that Toby didn't quite feel comfortable making use of it. Books, on the other hand... they'd been an inexpensive form of entertainment and escape, and even when he'd lived with people unwilling to buy him any, there had always been libraries.

Bruce picked up his book about transmission lines and flipped to the section about quarter-wave impedance transformers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarter-wave_impedance_transformer). While he was doing that, he may have been keeping an eye out for how comfortable anyone looked if they were wearing modern clothes for the first time.

No, he wasn't thinking of you Tyrion.

Lucrezia was delighted to see her professor's clothing. She did not know modern styles, but it seemed to resemble the ensemble that Bruce had worn during their ill-fated nuptials.

She imagined that he would notice her dress (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/lucrezia/dress01.png), as it was hard to miss (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/lucrezia/dress02.png). Bruce -- who had been kind enough to assist her with shopping -- had also assured her that, despite the startling amount of skin she was showing, she would not be mistaken for a particularly low-class of courtesan.

It did feel somewhat naked, sitting here in class and knowing that everyone could see her arms and legs. There was something quite daring in it. Provocative, perhaps?

Reading was simple, and very much something Dolf could do. He sat back and relaxed a little, glancing at the class and being grateful that everyone was back to normal.

Simon leafed through his book while he listened to Tyrion. Clothing in ancient Greece (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clothing_in_ancient_Greece) wasn't really one of his interests, but he thought he could've been stuck with worse things.

Susan quite liked books, as long as they weren't stupid or insult her intelligence. She didn't much see the point in talking about them, though, so she was only about halfway okay with today's class.

Also after extending a certain Parents Weekend invitation, she found herself constantly checking for skeletal rats.

For some strange reason.

Bart was always hearing from Max how books were the most important thing. This was hard for the boy who grew up with virtual reality to really grasp, but he gave it a chance. He picked up his book, Multi-particle Collision Dynamics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-particle_collision_dynamics) and blinked. He thumbed through it, seeing all the equations and greek letters and symbols and his eyes started to glaze over.

Claudia had . . . a book about a British book company. She was paging through it, marveling that someone had decided to write the thing.

Jason had expected his book to be boring, until he'd opened it and discovered it was about poison dart frogs. That was actually something worth reading, he thought.

Hrm. James noticed the instructor's change in attire. Well suited. He thumbed through his book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Weinstein_%28economist%29), taking a few notes about the subject and how he could apply that to the Kingdom back home. Offering incentives for schooling, now there's an idea that would bring in a score of tutors...

Toby was wrapped up enough in his book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penicillin) that when the half-hour alotted for reading had ended, it took him another minute or two to manage to actually put it down, and even then it was with obvious reluctance. Once he finally managed that though, he looked around for someone to talk to.

Lex spent the half-hour quite happily reading about nerve growth factors and occasionally writing down notes for later.

Kenzi's book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.V.A.) about the band E.V.A. (http://www.evaband.it/) at least was about music (http://www.mtv.it/musica/artisti/archivio/artista.asp?idArt=14157), and interesting for that. But she needed the translated pages included in order to make sense of it. Which also lead to some fun just trying to pick out words she recognized, English to Italian. Also, hey, all-girl band. She liked that.

Stephanie hadn't thought it was possible to write an entire book about the history of the song "O Little Town of Bethlehem" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_Little_Town_of_Bethlehem) but apparently she'd been wrong.

It ended up being pretty interesting, and Stephanie found herself getting into the sections on the different tunes the song ended up set to most of the time, the verses few people knew about . . . the whole thing was pretty cool.

And now she really wanted a peppermint mocha.

Surreal was rather sure this book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lame_duck_session) was in gibberish.

"I do not understand a word of this," she said finally, snapping the book shut. "Beyond 'duck,' which I am thinking would be very tasty today for dinner."

Caroline's book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_ship_Agr%C3%A9able) had bored her something terrible. Did anyone really care about some French boat? She thought not. The only thing worse than having to sit and try to read it was having to find a reason to talk about it now. She thought Tyrion was a cruel, cruel man.

Kate was feeling much better this morning. No male parts. It was easy to improve from her weekend and she was making the most of this return to femininity by leaving her hair down for once.

She was here with her especially obscure book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_newspapers_in_Colombia) for anyone who wanted her.

Lucrezia waited until class was over to approach her teacher, feeling slightly awkward in this bizarre (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/lucrezia/dress01.png) half-dress (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/lucrezia/dress02.png), but more confident than she had been when she first placed it on.

She held her chin and tried to appear presentable, and as if this outfit was giving her an unseen advantage over whichever adversary she was meeting. Wasn't that the original assignment?

"I look like another person entirely," she said, showing him the dress and its matching shoes. "I feel a bit like one, as well."
