Basic Strategy, Monday, Period 4

As the students took their seats, they would each find a book being rather firmly placed on their desks by a teacher who had switched to modern dress for the week, though he wasn't quite sure he understood the point of his tie.

"Books," Tyrion informed them, once he'd finished the process of handing them out, "are the greatest tool there is in sharpening a mind. You may not think you need a sharp mind; perhaps you can get by on charging at things with a sword. And certainly that will work for some of you some of the time. For the rest of the time -- and especially for ensuring you have a properly full mind in a time of crisis -- there's nothing like reading."

"I am aware that there are other ways to obtain and store information on the island, but from what I can tell plain words on paper retain some popularity. Let's stick to those for the day."

"Your assignment is a simple one. Take the book I've handed you at random. Read as much as you can from it in the next half-hour. Then turn to the person next to you and have a discussion about what you read, and how you can see using the information in the future. And, sometime over the next week, pick out a book from the library or bookstore that talks about something you know nothing about, and be prepared to explain it to me when we next meet."

"If you cannot read, please let me know and we'll work out an alternate assignment." Probably it would be learning how to read, but that was a detail.

Toby could agree with Tyrion's perspective when it came to books. The internet was... interesting enough, but still unfamiliar enough that Toby didn't quite feel comfortable making use of it. Books, on the other hand... they'd been an inexpensive form of entertainment and escape, and even when he'd lived with people unwilling to buy him any, there had always been libraries.

Toby was wrapped up enough in his book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penicillin) that when the half-hour alotted for reading had ended, it took him another minute or two to manage to actually put it down, and even then it was with obvious reluctance. Once he finally managed that though, he looked around for someone to talk to.

Um, lol forever wikipedia for giving the future paramedic an article on Pencillin.

Lex spent the half-hour quite happily reading about nerve growth factors and occasionally writing down notes for later.

Bruce picked up his book about transmission lines and flipped to the section about quarter-wave impedance transformers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarter-wave_impedance_transformer). While he was doing that, he may have been keeping an eye out for how comfortable anyone looked if they were wearing modern clothes for the first time.

No, he wasn't thinking of you Tyrion.

Kenzi's book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.V.A.) about the band E.V.A. (http://www.evaband.it/) at least was about music (http://www.mtv.it/musica/artisti/archivio/artista.asp?idArt=14157), and interesting for that. But she needed the translated pages included in order to make sense of it. Which also lead to some fun just trying to pick out words she recognized, English to Italian. Also, hey, all-girl band. She liked that.

I'm snickering that the rave girl got an article on an Italian all-girl rock band.

Lucrezia was delighted to see her professor's clothing. She did not know modern styles, but it seemed to resemble the ensemble that Bruce had worn during their ill-fated nuptials.

She imagined that he would notice her dress (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/lucrezia/dress01.png), as it was hard to miss (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/lucrezia/dress02.png). Bruce -- who had been kind enough to assist her with shopping -- had also assured her that, despite the startling amount of skin she was showing, she would not be mistaken for a particularly low-class of courtesan.

It did feel somewhat naked, sitting here in class and knowing that everyone could see her arms and legs. There was something quite daring in it. Provocative, perhaps?

Speaking of young ladies wearing modern clothes, one was glancing over to see if she could catch his eyes.

She was mostly impressed with herself for actually managing to wear it. Now that she was wearing it, she found that she liked it.

Possibly not to wear again, but it had its charms nonetheless.

Since he was already watching for her, Bruce spotted Lucrezia and gave a small smile and a nod of approval.

Lucrezia waited until class was over to approach her teacher, feeling slightly awkward in this bizarre (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/lucrezia/dress01.png) half-dress (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/lucrezia/dress02.png), but more confident than she had been when she first placed it on.

She held her chin and tried to appear presentable, and as if this outfit was giving her an unseen advantage over whichever adversary she was meeting. Wasn't that the original assignment?

"I look like another person entirely," she said, showing him the dress and its matching shoes. "I feel a bit like one, as well."

I feel your pain. Holliday is usually a very dark brunette, both in most of her roles and in 90% of any promo pics I can find of her, so Lucrezia is, likewise, sticking with the fancy dresses.

She laughed, giving a somewhat royal gesture of her hand, to indicate her thanks.

"Still feel comfortable with the look?" Bruce asked, staying a little quiet so as not to disrupt anyone checking out their books.
