The Club Fair, Gym, Friday Afternoon

Though he'd heard about something like it being in the works, the club fair wasn't what Simon had been looking for.

Regardless, it was what he found, just as it was being set up. He almost left straight away, to avoid being in anyone's way, but then his curiosity won out. So, he decided to stay and take a look at the club schedule.

Couldn't hurt, could it?

Miley fully did not understand what this club was about. Blame Disney. She did, however, have a great deal of pride in herself, and she did enjoy sparkly text.

"Oooh, can I get a cupcake? I LOVE cupcakes."

Good luck fielding this one, Petra.

"You can totally have a cupcake," Petra said, beaming at Miley. "Were you thinking about joining the club, or just drawn by the siren call of cupcakes?"

Miley glanced up at the sign, totally misunderstanding it.

"I'm proud of myself!" she decided. "Why hide that?"

Oh, no.

"You should totally be proud of yourself!" Petra said encouragingly. And then, well. Petra's best friend was Tiara Destiny Swan, Miss Mississippi. Super sweet girl. Not the sharpest tool in the shed. She was used to double-checking for comprehension, and she knew the warning signs. "You...do know what the club is for, right?"

"Absolutely! It's for people with a healthy self-worth and sense of identity!"

No, sweetie.

"...not exactly. I mean, yes, but it's for, uh. LGBTQ Pride?" Petra tried, attempting to jog recognition, then added quickly, "But you can totally still join if you're straight! Love allies!" She knew she should have made it more obvious after that snafu with Vice Principal Deadpool.

Miley... still didn't know what that meant.

She tilted her head, squinting slightly. "Uh-huh," she said.

"And, uh. That means...?"

...wow, what was it like under that rock?

Petra blinked at her a few times before spelling it out: "Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Questioning? And/or Queer, it's just stupid to have two Qs."

"Oh!" Don't mind Miley, she just accidentally tripped over the table and nearly knocked it over. "Oh! I didn't -- I mean -- I'm not -- "

Yes, Miley. Clearly.

"Don't worry about it, it's totally fine," Petra assured her. And then, "Oh my God, are you okay?" And the cupcakes were okay. Thank God.

Okay, breathing now.

"Yeah," she managed to laugh. "Uh. So. I thought it was... another thing."

"I got that," Petra said, smiling at her. "There have been a few misunderstandings; maybe I should have made it more obvious." Of course, the other one had been Deadpool... "Breathe," she suggested. "Have a cupcake."

Miley would be aghast to find herself lumped in the same category as Deadpool, since she was fairly certain he was crazy and all, but cupcakes were cupcakes and they made a decent recovery food.

"I mean, I'm not, like, AGAINST, uh, gay people," she clarified. Unconvincingly. "I've just, like, never met one. There aren't a lot in LA!"

THE DISNEY ONE. THE DISNEY LA.

Yeah, someone having to make the 'I'm not against gay people' clarification was rarely a good sign, but. The second part had most of Petra's attention. "Wait, are you talking about Los Angeles or some other LA? Because, I don't know? West Hollywood? Exists?"

"West Hollywood!" Miley exclaimed, seizing upon something she recognized. "That's where Fermaine lives!"

God, Miley, please stop.

Was Fermaine gay? Petra didn't get it. "So like, were you homeschooled before, or...?"

"No, no, I went to public school," she said brightly. Just, you know, in Disney. "Fermaine's my stylist." She froze. "I mean. Uh. Personal shopper. I mean. Uh, he likes clothes. Like, a lot."

Yep, she was blushing like a tomato.

And he lived in WeHo. "Okay," Petra said slowly. Stereotypes were, you know, bad, but sometimes there was some truth in them. Unless you were completely oblivious to them, it seemed. She was kind of confused about Fermaine's relationship to Miley, but that was about par for the course for this conversation. She was going to jump back onto some firmer ground. "So, like, do you want to join the club, or not?"

"Oh!" Awkward. Awkward awkward awkward. "Um... sure? I mean, I don't really get -- uh -- what do you do?"

So sorry, Petra.

"We talk about stuff and we support each other and we eat cupcakes," Petra said with a shrug. "The stuff we talk about might or might not be related to being LGBTQ. There might be glitter."

"I like glitter!"

Of course she did.

"I can... show up?" Miley offered finally. "I mean, if it's okay that I'm not, like... that."

Saying the words would take time.

"Straight allies are totally welcome," Petra assured her. "But if you're going to like, freak out all over the place, maybe you should...take it easy? For the furniture's sake. And the other club members."

Miley nodded. Probably for the best, Petra.

"Gooood call," she decided. Snagging a cupcake and taking a bite, she decided, "Baked goods probably help."

Pause.

After a moment of squinting at Petra, Miley bit her lip and said, "You look familiar."

"We met at the picnic," Petra reminded her, hoping that was all it was.

"Yeeeeeeeah."

Nope.

"Okay! Well, 'bye!"

Be grateful for her teensy attention span, Petra.
