The Club Fair, Gym, Friday Afternoon

Though he'd heard about something like it being in the works, the club fair wasn't what Simon had been looking for.

Regardless, it was what he found, just as it was being set up. He almost left straight away, to avoid being in anyone's way, but then his curiosity won out. So, he decided to stay and take a look at the club schedule.

Couldn't hurt, could it?

Sam wasn't going to wander around. It was a miracle he'd even come down to the gym at all. He wasn't planning on joining any clubs, groups, gatherings, or anything else. The Council was enough of a group for him.

He'd found a seat at one of the tables and was now just spending time there until he had to head home for a few hours for uncomfortable conversations and sullen silences during the Council meeting.

He looked thrilled.

"You look happy," Mercy said with a smile. "Or, well, not."

"Happy's a relative term," he said, shaking himself out of his thoughts. "I could be existential and ask if anyone is really happy but I'm not gonna do that. I've just got stuff on my mind."

"Oh. Yeah, I get that," she said. "Anything I can help with?"

"No," he said and shook his head. "No, it's not anything that anyone can help with. Thanks for the offer though. You gonna go join a club or something?"

Yes, he wanted the attention off of his issues because the more he examined them, the crankier he'd get.

Mercy would completely understand the attention off the issues things, though with her it was less getting cranky and more getting angsty.

She wrinkled her nose. "I don't know. I'm not sure I'm really suited for any of them. Or should that be vice versa?"

"You could always go sign up for cheerleading," he joked, pointing in that direction. "Bet they could find something for you to do. Mascots are highly in demand these days."

"Well, sure, but I'd hate to take the spot away from you," she teased back.

"See, I'm not signing up so you don't have to worry about that at all," Sam said, shaking his head. "I'm not and never will be cheerleading material. It's not in the genetics."

Toby- purple sneakers and all- in the midst of wandering around the gym, found himself wandering past Sam's table.

"Hey," he greeted casually. This totally didn't have to be awkward, despite all the handholding and... whatever the hell else had gone on the last time they'd talked.

"Toby, hey," Sam said, going for that not awkward at all tone too. "Hey, you found your shoes!"

They were purple but they were shoes and considering how upset Toby was when he thought he'd lost them, purple was just fine.

"They're Petra's, actually," Toby said, gesturing over to where she sat at the Pride table. "She's letting me borrow 'em till mine show up, or I can get a new pair. Whichever comes first."

"No one's given them back?" he asked, frowning. "How freaking jerky is that? I can probably loan you a pair too, if you want. Nothing as fancy as those purple kicks, though."

If Toby'd had the good sense to listen to the radio from the weekend, he'd know who took his shoes. Unfortunately, that little bit of detective work hadn't occurred to him, and neither had the responsible party spent a lot of time thinking about the shoe-theft, so.

"They are pretty badass," Toby noted, glancing down at them. "But I'd appreciate it all the same. There are some times when purple just doesn't work. Not that I plan to be borrowing shoes for very long."

"I'll drop a pair off at your room this weekend," Sam promised, nodding. "You here to join one of the clubs? Personally, I think you'd be excellent for the sorority."

He was doing great at avoiding the awkward conversation. Hey, he'd already done that once this week, in fact. Avoid it and it's not awkward!

Or something.

"I don't think I have the requisite parts for that," Toby pointed out dryly.

"Hey now, you could be...a barrier breaker!" Sam enthused, trying not to laugh. "Break down the walls of inequality in the sorority, Toby."

"Sam, hey!" Marshall said brightly, grinning. "It's been a while. How's it going?"

"Hey, man," Sam said, giving Marshall a wave when he saw him. "It has been awhile. It just makes our reunions that much better then, doesn't it?"

"Totally," Marshall agreed. He gestured kinda vaguely at a nearby seat, asking permission to sit down and join Sam. "What've you been up to? Classes, I guess? Sign up for anything today?"

"Yeah, yeah," Sam said, nodding at the seat nearby. "Nothing for today yet. I'm not sure if I'm gonna get there either. Me and clubs don't really mesh. I get bored easily."

That was probably a personal problem. "Besides that, it's been classes and occasionally going crazy and thinking I'm someone else."

"You, too, huh?" Marshall asked, suddenly wondering whether or not Sam listened to radio. All at once, Marshall wished he had listened to the past weekend's reports, just so he knew what Sam might have heard about him. "Yeah, that was... a weird weekend."

"Weird's an understatement," Sam said, eyes widening for a second before he shook his head.

Sam had managed to listen to one day of broadcasts before he'd gotten caught up in everything else and then been too embarrassed to hear about his own exploits.

"How'd the weekend weirdness treat you?" he asked when he'd shaken off his own memories of that weekend. "You kill anyone?"

That had been going around, apparently.

"What? No!" Marshall insisted. And he hadn't! "Why, did you?"

"No," he said, chuckling at that reaction. "No, I was apparently in witness relocation because I had to testify against a gang of criminals in the trial of the century."
