Library, Wednesday [9/7]

Gabrielle really had come to love the quiet of the library, and was almost sorry she had to leave long enough to go to class this term.

She'd been looking forward to the quiet today, which was -- naturally -- exactly why she was fated to spend large portions of her day trying and failing to locate the source of an incoherent but dry, rustly muttering coming from somewhere in the stacks.

She'd never been grateful for writer's block before, but at least this time it meant her ongoing search didn't contribute to her forgetting things she didn't get a chance to write down?

"I really am," Annie said. "That's why I want to meet everyone instead of just putting up posters and advertising. I want to really get to know the students I would be representing, and... And to make sure they're really represented, instead of just making random decisions on their behalf... Okay, now that I've heard it, I can't unhear it."

"Try being here all day," Gabrielle replied, making a face.

Then, through her teeth at the stacks: "Would you just knock it off for a few minutes?" No, she didn't feel weird talking to the books. That was normal compared to trying to organize stalactites into a choir while drugged.

She flashed a double thumbs-up at Annie. "That's the spirit! The real spirit of democracy, that is. I like you."

"I like you, too!" Annie grinned. "So is there anything you'd definitely like to see change at our school, or anything you think needs to be addressed? Um. Besides the talkative books. I'll tell you right now I don't have the slightest clue where to start there."

Gabrielle's eyes widened. "Oh! No no no, I don't want to get rid of those!" she blurted out, extra emphatically for the books' sake. "It's . . . a quirk. Really. One of those things that makes the Fandom library extra lovable."

Hopefully the books couldn't see her saying that through her teeth. She loved them, really she did! Most days. When they weren't messing with her.

"Huh. That's not a bad idea, actually -- a few events that celebrate Fandom's quirks? It's always nice for the island to feel appreciated . . . and maybe the new kids'll feel less scared about when those things eventually happen to them."

Or, you know, make them more scared.

"Oh, I like that!" Annie said. "And you keep hearing about things like the gremlins, but maybe they won't be such a problem if we don't make them feel like one. And considering our island moved around all summer, being nice to it can't hurt. I will definitely brainstorm that."

And hopefully not make anyone more scared. Or turn anything into a gremlin bite free-for-all...

Really, how could good intentions ever possibly go wrong?

Please don't answer that.

Gabrielle nodded, caught up in the idea now. "You could pitch it like learning to live with someone with really unique personality traits!" Not that she knew anyone at all like that. "A peaceful coexistence with the island . . ." Stop, Gab. Just stop.

Okay, that was the books' cue to play peanut gallery and snicker.

"Do not make me go over there and rip your pages out!"

She so wouldn't actually do it, but come on.

"Ooh! Ooh! Island Day!" she said excitedly, ignoring the books for once. "We can make an islandwide holiday out of it!"

Annie, you might want to wait to see what happens after this weekend before going there.

You'd think, with this being her third year here, Gabrielle would feel more like warning people about occurences like the one they were in for, but no.

"That's a thought!" she said instead. "I always like it when the townspeople get a chance to get to know the kids up here at the school, and vice versa. We always end up having to fight to defend the place at some point, so we may as well really appreciate what and who we end up fighting for. The ideal is great, but there's just something about that personal touch, you know?"
