Ethics [Tuesday, August 30, 2011, 1st period]

"Good morning," Anakin said, sweeping into the classroom where the students had been assigned seats. "I'm Anakin Skywalker and this is Ethics. If you're in the wrong place, now's the time to get up and flee."

If you were in the right place, it wasn't bad advice either, depending on Anakin's mood. He paced in front of their desks as he spoke, Jedi robe swirling behind him. "Most classes this week focus on introductions, but there are a few familiar faces in the classroom already and I'll figure out the rest of you as we go along. Fandom, as you might have realized already, is a multi-dimensional nexus where beings from many different places and times come together." He made sure to look each student in the eyes as he spoke. "As such, what you may feel to be moral and immoral might be completely different than the person sitting next to you. I encourage discussion, even heated discussion, but it must be phrased in a constructive way. Responses like 'yes, but that's dumb,' 'yes, but you're dumb', or punching someone are not constructive."

He'd done all of those before, but this wasn't about the ethics of the Ethics teacher.

"I have no problem at all sending you to detention if you irritate me," he concluded. "Now, the unpleasant administrative things out of the way, let's start with our first ethical scenario: If you had to choose between killing one person in order to save five others, or doing nothing even though you know that doing nothing means that those five people would die before your eyes, what would you do? And what do you think would be the right thing to do?"

His eyes slid to Katniss ~~assuming she was there~~. "We touch on unpleasant subjects in this class, some of which might not be all that hypothetical to your life's experience," he added. "If you prefer not to discuss a particular scenario, just let me know by shaking your head and I'll skip you until the next week."

Anakin clasped his hands together. "Now, let's begin."

Talk about radio, complain about how freaking early it is, see who you're sitting near, swap increasingly implausible rumors about the Ethics teacher...chat it up before Anakin comes in and makes you only talk about class matters.

Lex looked at the tag on his desk. That was unexpected, and potentially worrying if it hadn't been random chance.

Katniss found her seat, tucking her legs against her chest to make herself smaller than she was, and watched the room with wide eyes.

On the one hand, this was probably the most comfortable she'd feel in any classroom this year. On the other, this was what comfort looked like now.

Nathan really had no idea how he'd gotten into this class. No one wanted to know about his fucking ethics. They'd be appalled and probably try to hit them and with Topher a fucking animal, they wouldn't have anyone else to take that out on.

Oh well. Nathan had flopped down in his seat and leaned back, one foot slung over the desk. It was the Irish version of mingling. All he was missing was a drink.

Annie quickly found her seat, and was she completely delighted to be in the first row? Yes, yes she was.

The back of the room? Not bad, not bad at all. He could possibly sleep without getting caught!

This class was freaking early and there was definitely a stop to the Perk in his near future, but Luke wasn't gonna fall asleep in here like he had in other classes. Despite his history of giving the finger to authority, he would have hated it if Anakin was disappointed in him.

Which was weird to think about.

He took his seat right smack in the middle of class and wondered if this would make him more or less noticeable.

Hanna found her seat, resisting the urge to put her head down on the desk. Though she wasn't in the first row, she was sure she was close enough to be noticed if she fell asleep.

Yeah, Toby would be... staring at the tag on his desk for a few seconds before confirming that no, that really was his desk and there wasn't some other Toby Logan in the class who was supposed to be the TA. Holy crap.

Assigned seats? Seriously? Juliet glanced from side to side, trying to figure out who near her might be good to gossip with, worth copying off of during tests, or both.

Lucrezia had found her class yesterday to be fascinating, and hoped that class today would be equally so. She glanced around at her classmates, nodding at anyone who caught her eyes.

Mercy was glad to be sitting next to Lucrezia. "How are you settling in?"

Lucrezia smiled warmly at her big sibling. "The company is delightful," she said, "and I didn't expect such amazing classes. Though I am still not quite following much of what goes on."

[ooc; Please to be imagining previous comment said 'sitting near' Lucrezia, not 'next to' as someone is unable to read a seating chart. *sigh*]

"I'm glad to try and explain anything you don't understand," Mercy offered. "Your roommate working out okay?"

From the seat behind hers, Petra waved at Lucrezia. "How's it going?" Clearly Lucrezia was crazy, but that didn't mean Petra should be rude to her until she got out of here.

"Oh!" Lucrezia turned around and beamed at the other blonde. "It's so good to see you again. I'm well, I thank you, and you?"

At some point, she might have to ask her new friend about some of those odd things she had been hearing on the radio. Possibly not now.

"I'm all right," Petra said. "Not sure if I'm sticking around, but, you know, getting by." She gestured to Rosella, herself, and then Lucrezia. "Isn't this great, he created a perfect triangle of note-passing goodness."

Oh, hey, Petra was sitting next to Rosella! And behind Lucrezia. They could totally pass notes.

"I suspect," Rosella said, sliding a grin over at Petra with a nod toward Lucrezia's seat in front of her, "our instructor may soon regret this particular arrangement of seating. At least, I shall certainly hope he will before long, else we are not taking proper advantage of it!"

"We should try not to give him reason to separate us," Petra pointed out primly. Then she grinned and said, "But short of that, yay!"

Rosella wasn't even going to try to hold back her snort, but, once it was out, she gave a prim nod of her own, straightening as if to correct her posture. "Oh, yes, of course not. I'm sure we shall be the utmost picture of obedience and congeniality."

Even though he was in the back corner of the room, Seifer was pretty sure he couldn't get away with sleeping in this class. This was the guy who made them kill animals and use corpses for shelter.

Being in the front row? Not high on Hank's list of things he liked. But he was right in the middle of hot girl central, so everything was hunky-dory again!

"...Don't hyperventilate, Hank. Don't hyperventilate. Just act cool."

Believe it or not, Rosella was absolutely ecstatic to have a seating assignment. That meant that she was going to a school that had more students than just...herself.

It was thrilling.

Besides, she got to sit toward the back, in the middle, and she suspected it would be easier to get away with things like perhaps passing notes to Petra on her left or Lucrezia just one up from Petra or daydreaming or doodling instead of taking notes. And the bald kid was far enough away that she shouldn't have to worry about being blinded by the glare off his head!

How exciting!

Angelica couldn't help but be just a tiny bit nervous that she was front row, dead center in front of Anakin's desk. Not that she intended to goof off in class, of course!
