fandomhigh | Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Some parts of the East Coast might have been freaking out about a hurricane, but there was no such madness going on in Fandom. Sure, it was a little hot out, with the sun shining and not much breeze happening, but all the milk and toilet paper on the island was safe, and that was important, right? Besides, once the new folks started learning about their new home, there'd be more than enough freaking out to go around.

The usual main attraction had been set up first: a large buffet of food and drinks had been laid out next to all the information the new arrivals would need, and then the blue and gold tables and chairs had been arranged across the rest of the lawn. Everything was just about done when the shuttle arrived, and it was time for a picnic once again.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Thank you! I think." Rapunzel looked around at, well, all the chaos.

"It's very... hectic here."

"Yeah, the first day gets that way," Annie told her. "It calms down. Everyone just gets so excited about being here and meeting new people that everyone comes out for this. Was your old school not like this?"

That would be Annie's subtle way of trying to find out where she was from without the tired old 'So where are you from?' bit.

"Oh, I've never been to a school before!" So this was all extra exciting!

"Oh, so you were homeschooled?" Oh, she hoped this girl wasn't one of those scary religious types. There could be potential clash there.

"Not really? I mean, I read a lot."

Three books. Over and over.

"You've never had schooling?" Annie asked, and then realized that might be kind of judgey. "I mean, not that that's a bad thing, depending on where you're from, it's just not common here. Where are you from?"

"Um... home?"

She hadn't really thought about that particular question. She'd just... always been there!

She frowned, a worried sort of expression. "Is that bad?"

"Nope! Definitely not!" Annie said, back to cheerful. Her little sibling was not going to look worried about that if she could help it! "I'm figuring things might be a little-" A lot. "-different than what you're used to, but that's okay. That's why you have me."

"It is?" Really? That sounded amazing!

"Really. Okay, I'm going to tell you some things, and some of it might be hard to believe, but I promise I'm telling you the truth," she said.

"Okay!" Rapunzel leaned forward excitedly.

And a small green head popped up through her hair to look over her shoulder.

Annie opened her mouth to go through the spiel, but what came out of said mouth was, "You seem to have a frog in your..." accompanied with a gesture to her hair.

"A frog?" Rapunzel spun, trying to see what Annie was talking about. But all she saw was Pascal. So she kept spinning, wrapping her hair around her.

"Okay, okay!" Annie said quickly, trying to get her to stop. "Wow, I didn't know hair could do that."

Rapunzel flushed. "Is it weird?" she asked in embarrassment as she came to a stop.

Hmm.

And now she was sort of stuck.

"No, just... Are you stuck?"

"This?" she asked with a little giggle. "I'm used to it." She looked down at herself and then began twisting the other way to untangle herself.

"Happens a lot?" Annie guessed. Apparently the girl had a system...

"Well, not so much anymore, but when I was growing up..." All the time.

"Well, yeah, you must have been growing that forever," she said. It was kind of impressive. Annie's shoulder-length hair felt kind of inadequate.

"Well, I don't cut it," Rapunzel admitted with a shrug as she finally freed herself. "So, yeah, I guess I have been growing it for quite a while."

"Wow. Well, so the first thing you should know is that everyone and their mother will be commenting on your hair," she said. "I can guarantee that now."

"But... but why?" Rapunzel suddenly looked very worried.

After all, mother had spent a lot of time warning her about people who wanted to take her hair. Bad people. Dangerous people.

"Most of us just keep our hair shorter, like mine," Annie said with a shrug. "We don't see hair like yours much. It's the first thing people are going to notice because it's cool and usual."

"Unusual?" That wasn't reassuring!
