BWI Airport | Portalocity Lounge | Saturday Morning

Petra was so relieved to find the Portalocity lounge and a banner proclaiming 'Fandom High.' She was pretty sure that meant she was in the right place, even if she did seem to be the first one here, and it meant she could sit down and stop dragging her luggage (two large, new-looking suitcases and an extremely battered green leather overnight case with an Audrey Hepburn decal on top) all over the airport.

She picked out a chair with a good view of the door so she could see new arrivals and sat down with Holly Go-Overnightly in her lap, then pulled her phone out. All her friends were still asleep, no doubt, so texting was out, but surfing the web seemed like a good way to kill some time while she waited for other people to show up. She hoped she wasn't the only new student. That would be awkward.

No adult supervision? Not quite.

For lo, there is Jamie Madrox. Professor Jamie Madrox.

"All right students!" Jamie called out as he began to hand out sheets of lyrics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWO_AIh8drk) to all the students.. "My name is Jamie Madrox and I am one of the many faculty members who will be teaching you this semester. Before we get on the bus I'd like you to all learn this classic song that we'll be singing for the professors picking us up. Please sing it as loud as possible and if there's a guy in red pajamas please make sure you are loudest around him. C'mon people! Join my convoy!"

"Yes. Absolutely," Jamie said in firm agreement. No, he had no idea what Petra was talking about. "And if the bus is late we'll be re-enacting scenes from West Side Story. And possible a chorus of some of Britney Spears classic tunes."

"Oh is she out now?" Jamie asked. "I've been living in the desert with a bunch of ninjas who aren't down with pop culture."

"Damn," Jamie said dramatically. "This is serious. With the sudden drop of mindless bubblegum music we could be on the verge of another grunge movement and I don't have the hair for it."

...

"Has she shaved her head?"

"Excellent," Jamie said pulling out a pen and scratching out a name. "Tiffany what's-her-face. I'll just need a wig and a dress."

Lucrezia glanced over the lyrics sheet, wondering if Petra had been right about the singing group.

"What happens if we refuse to sing?" she asked.

"You'll have to sit in the corner with headphones on and be forced to listen to the Bay City Rollers," Jamie said with a serious wave of his finger. "Followed by the Best of Trini Lopez."

"For how long?" Lucrezia asked. "Perhaps I would prefer to be forced to listen to inferior music than to participate in it."

"As. Long. As. It. Takes."

Yes. Jamie was serious.

As serious as Trini Lopez when he covered "This Land is Your Land."

Lucrezia was now considering taking the lyrics sheet and mouthing words silently just to placate him. Not that she feared whatever this punishment appeared to be, but because he seemed to be a touch unhinged.

"And you have the authority for that?"

"Of course! I'm a teacher!"

Jamie had no authority whatsoever.

Lively faculty members handing out lyrics and encouraging everyone to sing was a delightful change of pace for Rosella. She took the paper happily, smiling with an uncertain excitement as her eyes started to dance over the words. She couldn't help but laugh.

"What a positively silly song!" she remarked with approval.

"Oh sure," Jamie said with a serious look. "It may sound silly but deep down it's about the heart of America. Our trucking industry."

"Half of these words," Rosella insisted, or at least she tried to. The mirth in her face was making it difficult to return the instructor's serious look, "are pure nonsense."

She did not sound like she considered this a bad thing, however.

"It's a code," Jamie said seriously. "A code that belongs to brothers. Of a brotherhood of the open highway, bad food, truck stop showers and eighteen wheelers."

Re: Wait for the Shuttle!

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-08-27 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Well!" said Rosella with a lift of her brows. "I certainly hope this brotherhood includes sisters, as well!"

"Well of course it does!" Jamie said with a grin. " Perhaps a more gender neutral term would be more appropriate."

"Then I suppose that puts fellowship right out," Rosella mused with a faint smirk.
