True Heroism! The Olympian Way! Session 3, Period 3

Partially because of the weather, though mostly due to the topic at hand, this week the workshop met in the Danger Shop.

Hercules himself was wearing a nice brown suit, with a white shirt, green tie, and his normal golden wristbands and headpiece-thingy. Behind him, however, were several mannequins. One dressed like his outfit the class had seen in previous sessions, the sash, the skirt, the sandals. Another wore an outfit that looked more pro-wrestler, with a body harness, a pair of wrestling trunks, shorter sandals, and a belt with a giant 'H' on it.

The others, however, wore costumes of some of Hercules' former teammates. The purpletastic Hawkeye, the equally purple singlet of She-Hulk, the poncy outfit of Thor, and a few others.

Once the class had gathered, they'd find a set of chairs to sit in. Behind them were racks upon racks of simulated clothes, which would become important later.

"Greetings, young heroes!" Hercules said with a grin. "This week, we've got one of the aspects that may seem shallow, but is actually quite important. The greatest opening line ever will not help you strike fear, if your outfit instead elicits laughter and guffawing. I will admit, my outfit sometimes gets laughs from those who think that a man needs pants to be manly. But then I'd do things such as throw them across a room and they learned quickly not to do that again."

He laughed, because he always enjoyed himself. "But the thing is, you must pick something that works for you. Practicality can be useful, but so can impractical clothes that get the right response. Some womanly warriors find that accentuating their form in order to distract their foes is quite useful." He pointed at the She-Hulk costume for that. "Some heroes find that they must have at least sixteen pouches on their outfit in various places. I have no idea what one puts in these pouches, but I have always laughed at the thought they just contain juice boxes. Mmmmm, Juicy Juice. A fine beverage."

Hercules then gestured at the racks. "All I ask you to do today is to put together an outfit for being a hero. Then model it for the class and tell me why you chose what you chose. If you wish to take something from one of the mannequins, you had better make a very good case, as those are the outfits of Avengers, champions without equal." He clapped his hands together. "Well, as the magnificent mortal Tim Gunn says, make it work!"

Hercules is excited to see what the class comes up with.

Percy wasn't gonna strut or turn but he did stand up and show off his outfit.

"I just went with armor, basically," he said, shrugging. "I've been using regular clothes and armor for awhile now and it works. I guess I don't really feel the need for an outfit to be super flashy with what I've been doing back home. More, I'd just like it to protect me from a sword or a mace or a volcano erupting around me."

Yeah, yeah, he could heal himself but so what?

"Have many volcanos erupted around you?" Hercules asked, because that sounded like an important thing to ask, suddenly.

"Just one but it really, really hurt," Percy said, wincing. Despite the whole being able to heal himself thing, he'd still nearly died and he wanted to avoid that happening again.

"I would avoid those," Hercules said, with a sage nod. "I don't know of any armor that can survive fiery lava."

He then thought for a moment. "Have you thought about getting personalized armor? Something with a symbol or your initials, or engravings of sea scenes?"

No twirling from this one either.

"I stick with practical, normal clothes. Drawing attention is rarely a good idea." All the more people who'd try and take you down if you looked like you were asking for it. "And I like to be able to move, and see properly. Most armor is heavy, and just gets in the way."

"Cloaks, are good for disguising your movements, and as a distraction..." When you knew how to use them. Plus, made for a decent blanket in a pinch. "And plenty of pockets," she continued, looking down at her Batman-esque belt of storage. "Not for juice boxes."

"Cloaks are very handy," Hercules said. "So you wish to blend in, then. Is there trouble for heroes where you are from?"

Hey, he came from a universe where heroes wore neon colored spandex and were often beloved by people. Certain hysteria related to certain legislation aside.

"If you go around looking like you're trying to be a hard-ass, there's always going to be someone wanting to prove themselves by showing that you're not," Kate said, shrugging.

"We don't really have heroes as such."

"Well, trying to stand out is not the same as being a hard ass," Hercules said. "After all, my outfits have hardly proclaimed the toughness of my glutes. But I suppose if you dress like the useless Wolverine, you may draw unwanted attention, you are right."

Then he added "You put much emphasis on 'heroes'. What do you mean, exactly?"

Alexander didn't know so much about modeling off his outfit, but he obliged in showing off his choices.

"I...mostly stuck with what I already wear," he admitted. "In my experience, it has never been the clothing that makes the hero, but what is on the inside that makes the hero."

His shrug was slight and sheepish, but he hoped the confidence in his smile sold it well enough.

"It certainly does not make a hero, unless your outfit is a shiny metal robot suit with special action accessories," Hercules said. "But your outfit... Hmmmm. Does it stand out at all where you are from?"

Where he was from...yes. But where he was supposed to be?

The question was a bit trickier than Mr. Hercules probably assumed. Alexander shifted a little and shrugged. "Fashion has never been a concern of mine, but these are the sort of clothing Mother says is expected of a royal prince of my stature."

"Perhaps you should wear a crown, too?" Hercules offered, tentatively.

In the end, Raven stuck with her black cloak and dress, though she added opera length gloves and thigh high boots that improbably stayed up for fun.

"I am comfortable in this," she said. "I see little reason to change it, as I do not have a secret identity to maintain."

"I like it," Hercules says. "It is like a dark version of fair Wanda's outfit, may she rest in peace. Though perhaps something feathered could accentuate your name?"

"Who is Wanda?" Raven asked curiously.

She lifted her cloak up and studied the bottom edge. "I suppose I could add feathers to my cloak," she said. "But they do not seem very practical."

Hercules gestured to one of the mannequins (http://www.marveldirectory.com/pictures/individuals/s_1d/scarletwitch.jpg). "An Avenger, who met a tragic end after very tragic happenings. She was known to the world as Scarlet Witch."

"As for practicality... a cloak of feathers may not be practical, but it would look amazing."

Bart stood up and puffed out his chest, looking proud. He turned around, posing a bit. He was wearing his red and white skin tight uniform, round yellow goggles with the little lightning bolts over his ears. His big red sneakers were replaced with big red boots.

"I modeled this after my cousin and grandfather's costume. It's sleek to reduce wind resistance, goggles to protect my eyes, boots for traction and..." He flicked a finger over the lightning bold ear things. "It looks awesome."

"...something tells me you had this prepared already," Hercules said, smirking. "Your cousin and grandfather were also heroes?"

Bart beamed proudly. "Yeah, some of the best. Someday I'll take over when Wally retires or whatever. But I like being Impulse for now."

"You mean you will take over their hero identity?" Hercules said, intrigued. "You do not wish to forge your own name?"

In the end, Warren wound up with an outfit that was more or less aped from the leather gear that the X-Men wore back home. He'd left out the X-logo, because... well, he wasn't a member. And of course there were some kind of sloppy slits up the back to let his wings out. But it was functional.

"Leather," Warren explained, with a little half-turn to show how he'd tailored it for his wings. "It's fairly wind-resistant, and it can take a lot of damage. Probably a good idea, because if I mess up, I tend to make a pretty solid landing, you know? And, uh... it wipes clean, if I end up bleeding."

Which he did. A lot.

And, well, Karla would like the leather on him.

Hercules paused for a moment, a little frown on his face.

"...are you sure black is your color?" he said, picturing Warren in something white and red.

Warren bit his lip, looking down at his outfit thoughtfully.

"... I don't really wear it often," he admitted. "Did you have something better in mind?"

He was open to suggestion! He was new at this! And Herc already knew what looked good on him, thanks to those other damn Warrens in those other damn realities.

Stupid other Warrens.

Hercules turned around and spotted the Mannequin (http://starsmedia.ign.com/stars/image/object/921/921068/angel-marvel_boxartboxart_160w.jpg) he wanted, and gestured to it.

"Something like this? Befitting a Champion?" He had a little tentative smile on his face, hoping his young alternate universe companion liked it.
