Big surprise: classroom, kitchen setup, trays of cupcakes up front. That much was about par for the course. The glass case that looked like it was meant to keep cupcakes away from curious would-be tasters might be a new twist.

Although some of the cupcakes inside that case did look rather lovely. Some looked nothing like cupcakes at all. There were baby birds in a nest, ladybugs, and shark fins sticking out of water icing, in case you hadn’t been missing less freezing temperatures enough, and needed a beach theme to rub salt in the wound.

Stark was eyeing all of the cupcakes warily. More warily than he normally eyed the questionable cupcakes. Anders, likewise, was giving the cupcakes -- a colorful array of really attractive ones --a suspicious look and a wide berth.

. . . okay, so the wide berth might have something to do with the gremlin trapped under the glass dome with some of the cupcakes.

“Hey, guys,” Anders began, looking sheepish and apologetic and almost nervous. “The plan for today was to cover the idea that cupcakes are so awesome, people make stuff that looks like ‘em without the edible part. Just that guy in there --” he shot a glare at the gremlin -- “mixed ‘em all up. So instead, today’s gonna be about making sure you know your baked goods well enough to be able to tell the difference between real cupcakes and fake ones made out of soap.”

“I don’t recommend tasting them,” Stark said. He hadn’t, thankfully, but the idea of biting into a cupcake and getting soap instead was still fairly horrifying. “Try to find out another way.”

"That doesn't involve getting bitten," Anders had to disclaim, like the entire biting option wasn't already limited enough today.

Momoko wasn't sure which was worse today, the soap cupcakes getting mixed up with the real ones or the trapped gremlin. Despite the fact that she at least knew some of the cupcakes were real, Momoko was following her teachers' examples and staying away from the table.

She also worried if it was in her TA-description to be the one to free the gremlin. She was totally calling Jaime or Scully to meet her and lock her in her room, if so.

That might be smart. Especially with the way Kenzi was pressing her face to the glass, making faces. "DUDE. THIS THING IS WEIRD."

Momoko stepped closer when she noticed. "Ah, Kenzie! Be careful! Haven't you met a gremlin yet?"

Wait.

"Are you in this class?"

The gremlin was making faces back at Kenzi.

"I've been here before," Kenzi said, somewhat misleadingly. "With the breakfast cupcakes. And no! I thought these suckers were a myth!" She started cackling. "I'm so telling that Jack guy they're real. He won't believe me. Ha!"

And Momoko hadn't noticed that Kenzie was on the roster? Weird!

"Totally not a myth! And they're totally dangerous! Well, sort of. You totally don't want to get bitten by one. I'd stick to the other cupcakes, if I were you."

Wasn't life funny that way?

Kenzi took a huge bite of cupcake and stuck her face closer to the glass, taunting the gremlin with her cuppycake. "Whyyyyy?"

The gremlin reached for one of the cupcakes with him and smashed it against the glass where Kenzie's face was, then giggled madly.

"Because the bites are poisonous!" Momoko was more convinced than EVER that this girl needed looking after. "If you get bit, you do all sorts of crazy things! It's totally real, trust me. Haven't you seen any of the weird things here?"

"Suweah," Sure said Kenzi, nodding, through a mouthful of frosting. "Does your arm swell up and fall off if it bites you? Has anyone bit one back?"

The gremlin nodded emphatically at Kenzi's question about the arm falling off, but managed a huge pout with big sad eyes at the idea of being bitten itself.

Momoko was a bit busy staring at Kenzi to notice, though. "Uhm, no? I don't think so? Who would want to bite that?"

Kenzi considered it, then told the gremlin, "I will nom you like frog legs if you try to bite me, buster."

Well. Maybe not. But it was a thought!

It was a totally disgusting thought! Which you could tell by the look of horror on Momoko's face.

"You will not!" Momoko had seen the effects of being bitten and had no idea what would happen if the girl would bite it back!

"If you don't save me, I gotta defend myself," Kenzi told Momoko. "...not that I'm setting it free. Just yet."

Momoko's hands went to her hips. "Save you? There's no 'saving' from a gremlin bite. The only cure is to stay away or wait it out!" Or not be a Skywalker.

"You lied!" Kenzi laughed and pointed at the gremlin, who was still making faces. "You tried to tell me my arm would fall off, monster-face!" In a more conversational tone to Momoko, she said, "So, no one's ever locked one of these in someone's closet, right?"

HMM.

Watch Momoko flail. Flail, Momoko! Flail!

"I don't know! It's hard to tell what they're going to do and people can't just catch them and carry them around and put them places! Trust me! You totally don't want to try."

"Well, maybe if we're here long enough, we can work out a deal. Right, Mr. Gremlin?"

Kenzi gave it a speculative look. Hey, it had worked with the squirrels.

"GREMLINS DON'T DEAL!" There was more flailing from Momoko but the Gremlin was apparently attempting to plead his innocence.
