Big surprise: classroom, kitchen setup, trays of cupcakes up front. That much was about par for the course. The glass case that looked like it was meant to keep cupcakes away from curious would-be tasters might be a new twist.

Although some of the cupcakes inside that case did look rather lovely. Some looked nothing like cupcakes at all. There were baby birds in a nest, ladybugs, and shark fins sticking out of water icing, in case you hadn’t been missing less freezing temperatures enough, and needed a beach theme to rub salt in the wound.

Stark was eyeing all of the cupcakes warily. More warily than he normally eyed the questionable cupcakes. Anders, likewise, was giving the cupcakes -- a colorful array of really attractive ones --a suspicious look and a wide berth.

. . . okay, so the wide berth might have something to do with the gremlin trapped under the glass dome with some of the cupcakes.

“Hey, guys,” Anders began, looking sheepish and apologetic and almost nervous. “The plan for today was to cover the idea that cupcakes are so awesome, people make stuff that looks like ‘em without the edible part. Just that guy in there --” he shot a glare at the gremlin -- “mixed ‘em all up. So instead, today’s gonna be about making sure you know your baked goods well enough to be able to tell the difference between real cupcakes and fake ones made out of soap.”

“I don’t recommend tasting them,” Stark said. He hadn’t, thankfully, but the idea of biting into a cupcake and getting soap instead was still fairly horrifying. “Try to find out another way.”

"That doesn't involve getting bitten," Anders had to disclaim, like the entire biting option wasn't already limited enough today.

"Tooooby," Kenzi specified. She'd been hoping to flirt with him some more, he was fun. "Seen him?"

"Yep." Sam didn't elaborate because she'd only asked a yes or no question and he decided he wanted to be overly literal today. It wasn't his fault she hadn't figured out he was a cat.

Yeah, like that would discourage her at this point. "So? Care to share why he's not in class?" She frowned. "He's not sick or something, is he?"

"What makes you think I know?" Sam asked, glancing over at the cat that was sniffing at some of the soap items and flicking his tail disgustedly. "Last I checked, I wasn't Toby's keeper. Missed that interview."

"'cause you just said you'd seen him. Did you, or didn't you?" Kenzi sticks her tongue out at him, then clarifies, "You don't have to get pissy. Just say you've got no clue." Her eyes follow his gaze over to the cat, then, and she blinks. "You brought your cat to class?" Weird much?

Sam gave her a look for that one. She'd gone from assuming he was pissed to calling him weird. Did that make Sam wanna stop being stubborn? Nope.

"Making a lot of assumptions today, aren't you?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. "You don't even know my name and you've decided I'm pissy to deciding I'm clueless. That's really not the best way to get me to help you out, now is it? I could say Toby left town and you wouldn't know if I was lying or not."

"True. Are you the sort of person to do that?" Kenzi asked, undeterred. And picking up 'cupcakes' to smell them, trying to decide which were real. "I might do something like that." She leaned over. "What's the cat's name?" she asked, holding out her fingers to it.

"What makes you think this is my cat?" Sam asked, ignoring the first part of her question so he could snicker at the second part. "You're just full of assumptions, aren't you? And yet, you haven't even asked my name. That's like a first date without dinner."

Kenzi gave him another 'you're strange' look, then shrugged, reaching for the cat. "So you don't care if I take him then?" Hey. If it wasn't this guy's...

Of course, Bart might not like it. Bo definitely wouldn't. Hmm. Maybe she could give him to that girl across the hall. She looked like a cat person.

She stared at him, and then decided, "I now dub thee Rupert."

"You're just gonna take a cat that's not mine but could be someone else's?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow yet again. "You ever think that maybe it's a transformed student? They might not like the whole 'let me steal you' gig you've got going."

"If you're not stopping me, it's your fault," Kenzi countered. "And maybe he'd love to be stolen by me. Wouldn't you? Wouldn't you?" She made kissing noises at the cat and scratched under his chin. "Yes you would!"

"Yeah, your logic's more twisted than a pretzel," Sam decided, shaking his head. "Put the cat down, you're not taking him. It's Toby and his roommate and me are watching him so you're not stealing him and you're not renaming him. I'd suggest getting yourself a pet if this what cats turn you into. Bet puppies make you even worse."

"Tobyyyyyy!" Kenzi was still talking to the cat, booping her nose against his. "You look like a Rupert when you're a cat, did you know that?" She didn't put him down immediately, still petting him, but grinned over at the other guy. "So, what should we name the guy who won't give me his name? I think he's a Gunther. Yes, yes definitely. I'm glad you agree."

"You...never asked for my name," Sam reminded her slowly. "I told you that a few minutes ago and you ignored that so I think that's on you. And I wasn't gonna give my name to someone who came up to me and immediately started interrogating me like I was under the glare of some muted light in a police station. Been there, done that."

"Really?" Kenzi refrained from saying 'me too!' "I'm sorry that sucked for you, Gunther." She still wasn't asking for his name. Hey, if the dude didn't want to share it, he didn't wanna. No skin off her nose. Even if he seemed a little insulted she didn't ask directly. But why be direct?

For instance: "I'm Astra." She kept petting Toby, considering. "I wonder if this is going to last as long as it did for my roomie. Or if he'll remember this.'

"Gunther isn't my name," Sam said, shaking his head. "Good guess but not even close. And no, we're not gonna play the hot and cold game with my name either."

He shrugged and looked down at Toby. "As for that, I dunno. He's been that way awhile. Stan keeps him most of the time. I do it when he can't. And I'd appreciate if you didn't steal him. I'm sure he'd appreciate it too since he'd probably smack me in the head."

"I'm good with calling you Gunther, though," Kenzi-Astra told him, and cocked her head at Toby with a sigh, addressing the cat. "Guess we'll have to go out for mastodon burgers some other time, guy, since your chaperones are being all responsible and shit. You'll get more out of it as a human anyway." She patted him one more time on the head, and picked up another possible-cupcake, licked it, then bit down, licking frosting off her fingers. "Tell him I said 'hey' if he doesn't remember, would you? Pretty please with pink icing?"

"You keep calling me Gunther, you're gonna have a great time talking to the air," Sam told her, shaking his head. "But, I'll tell him. Sure."

Considering she kept calling him Gunther and kept making assumptions, he thought that was very nice of him. Maybe it'd get him some good karma.

She hadn't been assuming, she'd been messing with him, testing him... but she did that to almost everyone. He'd probably assumed she'd been telling the truth when she said her name was 'Astra'. Pfft.

"Bye, Gunther... guy. Bye, Toby." And Kenzi swiped another cupcake on her way toward the door.
