Try Not to Die!!!! [Tuesday, July 19]

Anakin, despite not having lived on a desert in several decades--and having a wife who was from New England--was still a big baby very sensitive when it came to cold. And he'd learned that as long as you were warm, it didn't really matter how silly you looked.

Perhaps someone had just told him that based on the headgear he was currently sporting, thanks to the island's bizarre weather, which was certainly...something.

Bundled up in his Jedi robes and trying not to look like he was completely freezing, he gestured to a rack of the sort of snowgear that mountain climbers wore. "Put that on," he commanded. "The cold on the other side of the causeway is not messing around, and those suits have been fitting with tracking devices in case you wonder off. I would really hope you all take the name of this workshop to heart today and try not to die."

After the students were suitably dressed, he handed them GPS units and gave very brief instructions on how to use them, then stepped back from the clue box. "See you at the rendevous point."

This would be so much easier in her coyote form. She briefly considered slipping into the trees and shifting, but wasn't sure if that would be considered cheating or not. And too many of the other students might see her. Or at least wonder where the heck some random coyote came from.

So, with a sigh, she set off at a run towards one of the buffalo. Basic hunting techniques worked just the same in human form, she just couldn't run quite as fast.

Afterwards she made her way down the cliff to go find the teacher.

The competitive part of Cara really wanted to go after one of the big woolly things, but the part of her that was aware she didn't really have any ranged weapons decided one of the big, grumpy-looking cows would be a better bet.

Besides the adult ones were as tall as a Shadrin and easily twice as heavy, so it wasn't like they wouldn't be a challenge. Of course thanks to someone's lectures on proper hunting techniques, she wouldn't be going after an adult unless she could find one that looked lame.

Hunting? Also something Firekeeper was pretty damned good at. Fire in one hand and Fang in another, she worked with Blind Seer to herd one of the mammoths to the spot she wanted it.

She may have spent some time contemplating how to get down there later to retrieve the carcass.

What? Anything else would be wasteful.

Today's class seemed determined to remind him of Katniss. First the fire, now hunting. With a resolute focus the likes of which he rarely had for anything, he got to work putting a few sticks together to make a bow. Then, forcing himself to be careful and quiet the way he'd been taught, he darted after a woolly mammoth, channelling her quiet strength all the while.

This was simple enough. Luke was glad he decided to go for the fire rather than the weapon, since the burn of the torch would send a message quicker than the weapon could. He got a mammoth to run off the cliff quickly.

He hoped he really wouldn't have to eat that.

Sam took approximately half a second to ponder just how insane her teacher was, then burst into a yowling war whoop that echoed across the icy landscape and ran full speed at one of the mammoths, spear waving.

The mammoth, possibly having heard of Sam's reputation, decided it'd be a better idea to run away -- unfortunately for it, it ran right off the cliff.

That was fast. Too bad it'd taken Sam so long to make that spear.

This... seemed somehow mean. Not to mention that Annie really didn't know how to scare a mammoth enough to give chase. In the end, the mammoth seemed to sort of just give up and head towards the cliff just to get Annie to stop yelling at it, but by now, yeah, she was towards the end of the class.

They should be documenting this! Scully was taking massive mounds of pictures and not really stampeding the buffalo or the mammoths, although she'd take credit for that one that panicked when she got too close, if she had to.

Samples were needed!

Lion-o was pretty good at hunting -- when he had his fancy sword. Without it, he couldn't seem to get any of the mammoths to budge. It took him a while to decide to switch to hunting buffalo when Plan A was not working.

Okay, Marshall thought. Cliff here, buffalo there, which means it needs to be driven in that direction, so I should probably go at it... "This way."

Yelling and waving the fire at the buffalo, Marshall succeeded in driving it at the cliff, but he ended up having to prod it with the flaming wood before it would actually go over.

Seifer knew that several classmates had beaten him already, he could tell that from the pile of corpses at the bottom of the cliff. So what the hell, he was going to take his time picking out his dinner. After that, it was just a matter of aiming and throwing the spear, and then watching the buffalo run over the cliff.

"No matter what planet, the best food is the dumbest," he muttered as he made his way down the cliff.

Bruce knew that it would probably be easier to buffalo a buffalo, but he was only partly about efficiency. The other part of him liked style, and it was much more impressive to take on a mammoth and live.

Bruce hunted the mammoth effectively before finally springing up on it and jabbing his spear in its hindquarters to get it moving. It wasn't too long before Bruce had driven the mammoth over the cliff with nothing but speed, guile, and a pointy stick.

Tahiri was equally bundled up and trying not to look too miserable, and hoping she wouldn't have to, you know, venture out and rescue someone from anything remotely Wampa Ice Creature-ish.

It hadn't been that many years for her since leaving the desert.

Mercy made her way over - far less out of breath than she had any right to be. "Done, sir."

Firekeeper and Blind Seer had no such rants as they made their way to the check-in point. "Can we go back for the meat?" Firekeeper asked without preamble.

Cara looked far too pleased with herself when she she showed up at the bottom of the cliff hauling a good tonne of buffalo (that strangely looked a bit more like it'd been stabbed than run off the cliff) behind her.
