Cooking for Beginners and Not-So-Beginners, Monday 3, Week 3

"I hope we're all back to normal," Steve said, since you never knew who might be an animal this week or gremlin bit or who-knew-what else, "because we're going to be covering the most important meal of the day: breakfast. It's very important to eat breakfast because it gives you a solid nutritional foundation for the day ahead, and means you're not ready to eat all the dougnuts by ten AM. Now, the good thing about breakfast is that most breakfast foods are designed to be prepared first thing in the morning, when even the most accomplished cook is not at their mental best. At a very basic level, breakfast can be a bowl of cereal and a banana, a bagel with cream cheese and lox, or some yogurt with honey and fruit, but...those aren't really cooking. So let's talk about cooked breakfast foods."

Steve started by handing around a packet containing instructions on how to prepare all of the dishes he was going to cover in this lecture, then began, "Eggs are commonly prepared for breakfast, whether soft boiled, scrambled, or fried, although fried eggs do require a little bit of practice to get right. Eggs are commonly accompanied by fried bacon and toast, and sometimes hash browns.

"While delicious, this isn't the sort of breakfast you should have every day, as it's not really nutritionally sound. Sometimes maybe you could have oatmeal--the instant stuff is perfectly fine, but it can't hold a candle to oatmeal from scratch, so please, try it sometime--or, as your cooking skills develop, French toast, waffles, or pancakes. You can serve cut-up fruit on top of any of those three dishes, or add it to the waffle or pancake batter, to make it healthier and change things up. Or you can go all-out with chocolate chips and whipped cream. I'm certainly not going to stop you. And, for the more advanced among you, or for special occasions, there are always pastries like cinnamon rolls, and while we really don't have time for those in this class, I encourage you to try them out in your dorm kitchen." Where Steve wouldn't have to clean up.

"Now, we have a full handwavey array of ingredients and equipment here, so get started on whatever sounds good, or whatever you feel comfortable cooking at your skill level--if that's toast and a scrambled egg, that's great, if that's waffles with strawberry compote that's great too. And if you need help please don't hesitate to ask me or your classmates."

"Mmmmmm," Ariel gave a happy sigh, moving her less than impressive eggs around with a spatula. "Ham is good, too, though, but bacon is better! Bacon goes well with eggs! I'll share a little of mine if you want to share a little of yours."

Kenzi looked over, and then shrugged agreeably. "Works for me. We got hot sauce? I like mine with that." She grinned. "Now we just need to find someone who can make us fluffy waffles."

"Oooh, hot sauce!" Ariel eyes widened with a brightened spark. "I haven't ever thought of that before!"

That would be a really good way to mask the fact that the eggs were really pretty burnt.

"And French toast! Someone's got to be good at French toast, right?"

"Someone who isn't me!" Kenzi said cheerfully. "We could bug someone to show us how? 'Cause I know you're not just supposed to soak bread in eggs. But that's it." She handed over a hot piece of bacon to Ariel, unable to wait for the plate, and started nibbling on her own. She sniffed at the eggs, nose wrinkled, then looked philosophical. FOOOOOOOOOD. That was not poisonous. Or Karla's. Or both!

Ariel bit her lip a little at the sniffing and the look on the other girl's face before asking, "Do you think they turned out okay?"

"They smell a little-- Cajun." Kenzi went on quickly, because there was being blunt and there was being mean. "But that's why they'll taste even more awesome with hot sauce!"

"Exactly!" Ariel said happily, pleased now to add the eggs to a plate even if she was feeling like Kenzi was just being nice. But that was awfully kind of her. "You know what I think might make this breakfast even better?"

"What?" Kenzi was mumbling around her bacon. Manners were suspended when hunger was in play. And she'd eaten way worse than some crispy eggs.

"Cheetos!"

Kenzi, meet Ariel.

"Do you think there's any in the classroom?"

"Ch'tos?" Kenzi stared, and stopped chewing for a moment. Then pointed at her. "You are my kinda girl," she said after she swallowed. "If there are, we should find them."

Junk food. It's what's for breakfast, lunch *and* dinner!

It was hard not to feel good with a validation like that! Ariel smiled proudly before dissolving into a giggle. "This has got to be the best breakfast ever," she decided, heading over to seek out where the junk food might be hidden. She had a feeling Mr. Rogers would not approve, and therefor, there had to be some searching to be done.

This was going to be cool. Jason had been right, people here weren't bad at all.

Hmm. "Coffee! And maybe Red Bull to go with it!" And she went to search for that, too.

Re: Cook Something

As Ariel was going through the Home Ec room cupboards, she was finding them completely bereft of Cheetos. Not even any Cheesy Puffs or Cheez-Its or Cheezy Blasters. A frown was quickly developing, yet she was not terribly surprised.

She bet that if Mr. Deadpool taught this class, there'd be Cheetos!

"I think we're a no-go on the Cheetos," she was sad to report.

"And the Red Bull," Kenzi said, frowning. "But the coffee's perking!"

It would probably strip paint when it was done.

"We should bring the Cheetos next week, if Mr. Rogers doesn't get how important they are." Or, you know, steal them from the Common Room.

"Do you think next week we'll be doing lunch?" Ariel wondered. "They make a great addition to a sandwich; gives them a really good crunch."

Re: Cook Something

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
"That would make sense. And Fritos. With peanut butter!" Nom nom nom nom! "We're gonna have to go on a raid." Kenzi paused. "I mean. Shopping. Certainly. That."

Re: Cook Something

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no, it's okay," Ariel said easily. "I've got a secret stash in every common room; I'll just bring some of that!"

Re: Cook Something

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Seriously?" Kenzi beamed at her, and restrained the urge to cheer. "Coooooool." Although to be fair, she'd share any food she managed to scam from somewhere too. "And Pringles! Pringles are awesome!"

Re: Cook Something

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
"I haven't tried too many of those," Ariel admitted. "I kind of found Cheetos and have been in love ever since."

Re: Cook Something

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
"So you didn't get much junk food at home?" Kenzi guessed, if Ariel didn't know the others. She dug into her eggs, then reached for the hot sauce and liberally sprinkled them. "MMmmmmmmmm."

Re: Cook Something

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ariel, for her part, helped herself to some bacon. "Nothing like what they have here!" she said happily. "There's a lot different about where I'm from, really."

Re: Cook Something

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Mmmmph?" Swallow. "Like what?" And moooore bacon! "We may have to make seconds. Since we were cheated out of Cheetos."

Re: Cook Something

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Oooh!" Ariel said, reaching for a whisk. "Let me see if I can master pancakes!"

She wouldn't even come close.

"And, well, gee, I don't even know where to begin, everything's that different..." She thought for a second and laughed. "Well, for one thing, did you hear about the shirtless tradition at the Welcome Picnics?"

Re: Cook Something

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Dude, no. How did I miss that?" Kenzi mourned. Especially now that they were in an Ice Age, for crying out loud.

Re: Cook Something

"You've got to find Jacob Black," Ariel suggested. "I think he'd never wear a shirt if he could get away with it, and that's my point. Back home, no one wears shirts. All the men are shirtless and the girls have their seashells."
