Tricks, Cons and Bamboozles | Tuesday | Period 4

Neal was thrilled he wasn’t a pony anymore. Seriously. So thrilled. He didn’t know if he could manage walking into a class and trying to teach while he had hooves and a tail. Fortunately, he didn’t have to.

When the students filed into the classroom, they would find the desks set up in rows of two, the chairs facing each other. On every desk was a small compact mirror. Don’t ask Neal where he got the mirrors. On the board in the front of the room was written in big blue letters:

“So,” he said once everyone was seated. “Last week we did fake introductions and practiced lying. This week we’re going to talk about the mechanics of it. More specifically, we’re going to talk about tells.”

“A tell,” he continued, “is something that gives you away when you’re lying. There are some that are pretty common, like blinking or stuttering. Some, you’ll only ever find on one person and hope you never, ever see it again.” He grinned. “Funny story, I once knew a guy named Billy who got really, really itchy when he lied.” A downward glance revealed just where, in fact, Billy had itched. Of course, that would be inappropriate to discuss in class, so he just implied it and left it at that.

“Today, I want you all to pair off in groups of two and start talking. You guys heard of the game Two Truths and a Lie? That’s basically what I’m talking about. Your partner’s job is to try to identify the lie by picking up on any tells that you might have. Then, once you learn what your tells are, I want you to watch yourselves in the mirrors I put on your desks and try to spot them.”

He hopped up onto the desk at the front of the room. “Ready? Pair off and get going. If you have any questions, you can come find me or Kenzi, the new TA.” He gestured to point her out. “Say hello, Kenzi."

Marshall looked around for someone to pair up with.

[I am off to bed v.shortly, but will pick up pings in the morning -- but I will prooobably be v.v.sp-ish tomorrow due to heading to my dad's for a day or two.]

"I don't know you," Quinn said, turning her chair to face Marshall's. "Lie to me."

[OOC: SP = fine!]

Marshall blinked. "Uh. Let's see..." His eyes flicked right. "Before we dated, my last girlfriend's venus fly trap turned into a girl and tried to eat me... Um, I once turned invisible because I felt like no one was noticing me, and..." His eyes flicked left. "Oh! I once travelled through a mirror into an alternate universe."

There, those were all wildly improbable, right? Or, at the very least, here they were all wildly -- and equally -- probable. No way to know which one's the lie!

Quinn blinked slowly. She'd been hoping to catch him off-guard enough that the lie would be obvious, but those kind of all sounded like lies.

Which meant they might all be true.

"I think the invisibility one is the lie," she reasoned out. "Mainly because I saw it on Wendy the Wereworlf Stalker. Also, the Venus fly trap one is kind of Freudian and disgusting."

"Nope," Marshall said, grinning. "That one actually happened in what was a blatant rip-off episode of the, ahem, Wendy one you're thinking of. And you're not getting any argument from me on the Venus fly trap being disgusting. She kept flies in her dresser, for a snack." Oh, look, was that his eyes going right again?

"Try again?"

[And this is me realising that the tell may be too minor to pick up on. Oops? ^^;; Eye movement's a fairly common one, so I went with that...]

"Ew. But then it's the mirror universe one," Quinn decided. "I dunno, you just look sort of shifty about it, and it had the least detail."

She couldn't quite put the eye thing into words, but she'd noticed it.

Kenzi was bouncing, ready to play one truth and two lies. Or whatever. This was going to be fun.

If given a choice between two blokes and girl, Nathan was gonna pick the girl. So, he sat down across from her and grinned.

"Fifty fucking dollars say you can't tell a goddamn thing about me," Nathan said because things weren't already interesting.

"You're Irish. Gimme the money," Kenzi responded, eyes gleaming.

"One, how the hell do you know that this is a real accent?" he asked, pointing to his mouth. "Two, no. That's not what I meant. Play by the rules or don't play at all."

"Fiiiine," Kenzi said, then said in her broken Eastern European accent, "You drive ze hard bargain, zir. Zo! Two truthz, one lie. Iz fair. Hmm." Okay, the lies were easy, what was a good truth to hide them in? Aside from her accent. The trick was to make them all relatively the same level of believability.

And if she thought he was lying about what he was lying about, she wasn't gonna give him any fifty bucks.

Nathan gave that laughable accent a chuckle before asking, "You wanna go first or want me to? I've not preference but hey, ladies first if you want. Just don't expect that courtesy if the world's ending and there's one spot left on the plane."

James looked around, wondering if anyone here could pick his lie amongst truths...and if he could pick theirs.

"Hi!" Asuna said, seeing someone she knew. "I don't know if you remember me, but I'm Asuna!"

She wondered how long its been or if James-san remembered they sparred that one time. Gosh, she didn't even know if this was the same year!

It had been ages. She was familiar face, but it took James a moment to remember her, and his face lit up at the recognition.

"Asuna! I've not seen you in quite a while. Where have you been hiding?"

She grinned. "I went home for a while now I'm back here! How've you been?"

At the mention of 'home' he looked to the left for a second, feeling a bit guilty about remaining here without any visits back home. He'd written...

"I've been good, despite what this place does." He rolled his eyes as he said: "Ponies." Glad it wasn't him.

"How are things back home?"

There was a class assignment, but James was not one to be strict on assignments or homework.

"You were hit by that too, huh? What color pony were you?"

Ramona was amazing at this game, thank you kindly. She had enough weird crap happen to her that it'd be easy to keep anyone from guessing correctly, anyway, she thought.

Getting to play with cute teacher? Yes, please.

"Sure," she said, shrugging. "I'll feel even better about beating the teacher at this game than one of my classmates.

"I can," she decided, stretching as she considered her options here. "All right. I'm a natural brunette, I have a plus-two hit point advantage against women when I fight them, and I'm a vegan, which gives me psychic powers."

She'd just borrow someone else's truth for her lie. All of this was said with perfectly even, almost bored inflection, as Ramona studied her nails.
