The Magic of a Good Time, Wednesday, Period 1

On the surface, Pinkie Pie's classroom looked surprisingly normal. The desks were arranged in a pleasing semi-circle, in which one could see any seat from any other seat in the room, with plenty of open space in between them for a grown pony to wander through. The desk at the front was covered with a sheet, hiding something somewhat lumpy and mysterious, but the sideboard counter had a coffee pot and a hot cocoa pot, and a nice array of apple turnovers and jelly donuts (with apple jelly) for the students to choose from.

A rope hung to one side of the chalkboard. Pinkie would get to that. First, she waited for the stream of students to subside and settle into seats, then strode to the middle of the semicircle and tossed her mane.

She took a deep breath. Eventually, the students would learn to brace themselves when she did that, as it meant the lecture portion would be delivered at high speed and in a single breath. "Hi! Welcome to the Magic of a Good Time, which is hopefully where you're meant to be, or if you're not meant to be here you're at least not meant to be somewhere else where they're going to miss you, because that would make those other ponies sad! I'm Pinkie Pie, your teacher, but my friends all call me Pinkie, and so can you! Because we're all going to be good friends in this class. Before you ask, yes, I can talk. And I don't know why ponies here find that so surprising, but it takes all sorts, doesn't it? Why my best friends include a bookworm, an adrenaline junkie, a workaholic, a wallflower, and clotheshorse -- literally! But we're all still the very bestest friends in the whole universe! This class is going to be on parties, because who doesn't love a party? and Princess Celestia said you should always teach what you know and there's nothing I know better than throwing a good party!"

She paced back and forth through the center of the semicircle as she spoke, frequently pausing to fling her front hooves into the air into a victorious V. And, no, this wasn't a pause for breath, here. It was merely a pause for narration.

"There are all sorts of parties you can throw, for all sorts of reasons! There's the birthday party and the after-birthday party -- those are Gummy's favorites, he's my pet baby alligator!" She turned to show off the tiny, purple eyed gator that was currently clamped to her tail by its jaws. "There's the holiday party and the season wrap up party -- which maybe you don't have here since you ponies don't create the weather -- and costume parties and Grand Galloping Gala parties and fancy dress parties and surprise parties and Tupperware parties! Let's all go around the room and meet each other. Say your name and where you're from and what kind of party theme is your favorite!"

When that was accomplished, and it had come back around to Pinkie again, she had made her way over to the rope at the side of the chalkboard. "I almost forgot to tell you what my favorite kind of party is!" she exclaimed. "I like the Welcome party!" She took the rope in her mouth and pulled. A banner unfurled from the ceiling reading "WELCOME STUDENTS!" The sheet on the desk was whipped off, revealing a spread of beautifully put together apple cupcakes, apple pie, some sort of dark cake with white icing and a single cherry in the middle, a large bowl of punch, a bowl of popcorn, and all sorts of other moddable, but only vegetarian goodies. Balloons and streamers fell from the ceiling, and the a record player started playing cheerfully upbeat public domain music with an audible scratch.

"Surprise!" Pinkie shouted. "Welcome to our class! Yay!"

Richie could handle 400 year-old guys, or older, who routinely went on head-chopping sprees. But talking pink ponies were another thing. A very strange thing. There was a lot of serious staring happening right now. He'd probably be recovered from the initial "what the hell" reaction by next week. Probably.
