Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

She didn't think she'd ever met anyone who'd admit to having a name like that, was all. That either took serious cojones or serious obliviousness. Kenzi-Astra said, "So, are you my parole officer here, or what? If I were Kenzi. Which I'm not admitting to. Yet."

"As far as I know, I'm just meant to help acclimate you to the environment," he told her. "Or -- Kenzi, rather. If you are Kenzi." Sure, whatever. "Nothing parole-related of any kind."

Ahaaaa. So, he didn't know why she was here. That made Kenzi lighten up a bit, and smile. "I might be." She grinned. "So, Wes, are we going to be doing bonding activities and fingerpainting? And what the hell's the deal with my roommate being a freshman boy?"

"Well," he said, aiming to put off the introduction-to-craziness part for as long as possible. "Fandom does offer co-ed housing, in the spirit of accepting the variety of backgrounds from which our students are coming."

Well, that was a little offensive, but he'd ignore it and go on. His wallet, for the record, was in his front pocket, and when he really got into lecturing, someone could manage to grab just about anything from him.

"As for the rest of it," he continued, "I think you'll find this school slightly shy of normal. For example, you'll notice a large quantity of individuals who will claim to be, ah... lycanthropic or vampiric in origin, for example, and it's quite true."

Something about a girl who seemed kind of like a rebel got him in full tightass Watcher-y mode.

Okay, maybe she'd underestimated old Wes. 'Cause that was a good one. Although... hmm. "Reeeeally?" she grinned at him more consideringly, and leaned forward to say conspiratorially, "Should I be sleeping with a stake and silver knife under my pillow?" She patted his shoulder. Juuust a minute, and then....

"Actually, you'll find the vampires at Fandom to be quite harmless," he said, though a part of him was impressed that she knew about the stakes and silver thing. "The administration does its part to keep, ah, incidents from occuring. So don't you worry!"

And now she had his wallet, yay! She slipped it into her purse while nodding thoughtfully at her big brother.

"I won't," she promised solemnly, then slightly more poutily, "Although if that Bart kid tries to get a peek, he's going to have something worry about."

Ah. Well.

"If something become an issue, the office is open on Mondays for roommate request forms," Wesley informed her dutifully. "Alternatively, you could discuss the matter with a faculty member and I am certain that he or she would accomodate your request."

Did his pocket feel lighter? No, couldn't be.

"Oh, well, I would never refer to them as freaks," Wesley said emphatically. "But you will find people who, for example, are familiar with magic and the like. Such as myself, for instance. In addition, there are those who might not appear ordinary, physically speaking, such as -- "

Then he caught sight of Pinkie Pie.

"Oh, dear," he said. "Well, such as that, for example."

Kenzi didn't look so she could freak out in just a little bit, but gave Wes a more thoughtful look. "So, if I said I saw someone eat a guy's face, what would you say that was?"

"Did... did you see that today?" he inquired, mildly alarmed. "Er. I imagine that could be some form of zombie, perhaps? But as far as I know there don't seem to be any of those here..."

"Not today," Kenzi clarified, still watching Wes carefully. "And not a zombie. I mean, she wasn't gross and dead, and they're always looking gross and dead, right? She sucked out his breath or something."

Oh, phew. So it wasn't here. It was still worrisome, but, you know, not immediate-Fandom-crisis worrisome.

"I don't believe they're exclusively, ah, gross-looking," he said. "Some are remarkably well-preserved."

He wasn't calling bullshit. Or calling her a liar. And... that really had happened, and been the freakiest thing of her entire freaky life. Kenzi decided to give Wes cautious approval, pending proof of dickheadedness or worse. Maybe she'd found somebody who actually believed in that stuff, even if they didn't know everything about it.

Not that she believed there were vampires here yet, though.

"Okay," she decided. "So, if I see one again, what do I do?"

Well. Kenzi was in luck, wasn't she, because Wesley knew all about how to take care of those things.

"Often," Wesley said, in his very best Watcher-trained lecture voice, "zombies are reanimated by means of a particular ritual, or even a talisman. To, for lack of a better word, deanimate them, one simply destroys the talisman or performs the counterritual, and then they die."

Simples as that!

"Hunh." That actually sounded like good Romero-movie logic. Had there been anything on that bartender to grab? Kenzi frowned, then held up a finger for 'wait' and started digging in her purse. "I got it on video, I don't remember much besides the boots, 'cause I was on the floor...."

His interest piqued, Wesley watched as she dug through her purse. He thought he saw something that looked like his wallet in there, but she was rummaging too quickly for him to tell.

Oh those wallets. They all look alike. That's why Kenzi collected the rare ones!

"Here," she said, pulling out the iPod and flipping to it, then to her Video of Twilight-Zone Awesome, showing Wes. Even though the angle on the events kind of went funny a couple times.

"Hunh." Kenzi tilted her head back at the video. "I wonder if it's the boots? They could be magic, right? So someone put the boots on her, reanimated her, and... ohhh, that's so wrong."

She could think of SO MANY GROSS REASONS FOR THAT.
