Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Ah. Well.

"If something become an issue, the office is open on Mondays for roommate request forms," Wesley informed her dutifully. "Alternatively, you could discuss the matter with a faculty member and I am certain that he or she would accomodate your request."

Did his pocket feel lighter? No, couldn't be.

Couldn't possibly be!

"Well, that's something." Although maybe she could work something out with the kid. Hmm. "So, what other freaks aside from the dentally challenged do you got on this island?"

"Oh, well, I would never refer to them as freaks," Wesley said emphatically. "But you will find people who, for example, are familiar with magic and the like. Such as myself, for instance. In addition, there are those who might not appear ordinary, physically speaking, such as -- "

Then he caught sight of Pinkie Pie.

"Oh, dear," he said. "Well, such as that, for example."

Kenzi didn't look ~~so she could freak out in just a little bit~~, but gave Wes a more thoughtful look. "So, if I said I saw someone eat a guy's face, what would you say that was?"

Uh.

"Did... did you see that today?" he inquired, mildly alarmed. "Er. I imagine that could be some form of zombie, perhaps? But as far as I know there don't seem to be any of those here..."

"Not today," Kenzi clarified, still watching Wes carefully. "And not a zombie. I mean, she wasn't gross and dead, and they're always looking gross and dead, right? She sucked out his breath or something."

Yes, Wes, this is a pop quiz!

Oh, phew. So it wasn't here. It was still worrisome, but, you know, not immediate-Fandom-crisis worrisome.

"I don't believe they're exclusively, ah, gross-looking," he said. "Some are remarkably well-preserved."

He wasn't calling bullshit. Or calling her a liar. And... that really had happened, and been the freakiest thing of her entire freaky life. Kenzi decided to give Wes cautious approval, pending proof of dickheadedness or worse. Maybe she'd found somebody who actually believed in that stuff, even if they didn't know everything about it.

Not that she believed there were vampires here yet, though.

"Okay," she decided. "So, if I see one again, what do I do?"

Well. Kenzi was in luck, wasn't she, because Wesley knew all about how to take care of those things.

"Often," Wesley said, in his very best Watcher-trained lecture voice, "zombies are reanimated by means of a particular ritual, or even a talisman. To, for lack of a better word, deanimate them, one simply destroys the talisman or performs the counterritual, and then they die."

Simples as that!

"Hunh." That actually sounded like good Romero-movie logic. Had there been anything on that bartender to grab? Kenzi frowned, then held up a finger for 'wait' and started digging in her purse. "I got it on video, I don't remember much besides the boots, 'cause I was on the floor...."

His interest piqued, Wesley watched as she dug through her purse. He thought he saw something that looked like his wallet in there, but she was rummaging too quickly for him to tell.

Oh those wallets. They all look alike. That's why Kenzi collected the rare ones!

"Here," she said, pulling out the iPod and flipping to it, then to her Video of Twilight-Zone Awesome, showing Wes. Even though the angle on the events kind of went funny a couple times.

Oh! Huh. Sure enough, that was... exactly what she had described. Alrighty then.

"I see," he said once it had played through. "Ah, yes, that would appear to be some form of zombie, I would guess."

"Hunh." Kenzi tilted her head back at the video. "I wonder if it's the boots? They could be magic, right? So someone put the boots on her, reanimated her, and... ohhh, that's so wrong."

She could think of SO MANY GROSS REASONS FOR THAT.

"It could very well be the boots," he agreed. "That would actually be quite ingenuous, as it's best to select a talisman that appears relatively innocuous, to avoid suspicion."

Not that he did much zombie-reanimation himself, of course. Ahem.

"How do you know this shit?" Kenzi had to ask, still very slightly on the skeptical side of the Force. "Do you just hang out on the internet 24-7 and talk dead things?"

"Certainly not," Wesley sniffed. "In point of fact, I used to go to school intended to teach me just this type of matter. I studied vampires and demons and the like for thirteen years."

A bit of a weird thing for him to say, being eighteen and all, but it was true.

"So your parents wanted to warp you from birth?" Kenzi blinked at Wes, wondering if that stick up his ass was inserted along with the encyclopedia knowledge. Poor bastard. "That is whack."

"No, no, not at all," he said, softening slightly. "Actually, it was rather an honor, to go to school where I did. I was training for a highly prestigious position."

"When you were five? Dude, seriously?" Kenzi reached out to take him by the shoulders, give him a little shake. "You were born sixty, weren't you?" Maybe he could be helped with medication? Or lots and lots of booze?

Rude, Kenzi. Rude and unwelcome!

"Allow me to explain," he said, doing his best not to seem annoyed. (He was about 40% successfuly.) "Where I come from, there is something of a plague of vampires and demons around the world. Into every generation a Slayer is born, who is meant to fight the forces of darkness. And every Slayer has a Watcher, whose duty it is to advise her in such matters. I was training for that role."

Her middle names! Along with trouble!

"Where the hell do you come from, Transylvania? Sparkle Vampire City?" Not that she was buying this, no, but Wes sure as hell was.

"England, in point of fact," he corrected her irritably. Like the accent didn't make that obvious.

Kenzi decided she liked Wes. Even if he was massively, massively in need of an enema. It wasn't his fault he was British. And he'd taken her seriously.

She'd loosen him up, yup.

"Got it." She shot her fingers at him, and nodded. "Any other important tips for living in a castle with vampires?"

"Well..."

He thought about it.

"I suppose it wouldn't be a terrible idea to have a stake around. Just in case."
