Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Jack had a sign for Miley Stewart with her name on it. It even had glitter! Yeah he was trying to make a good first impression. The corner was droopy though from being chewed on by a puppy.

He stood up on a chair and showed off his sign to everyone, waiting for his sibling to show...or the sign to melt in the rain.

Yes! Glitter and a sign with her name on it! This school couldn't possibly be bad if it had cute boys with glittery signs for her.

Miley marched right up to the guy with the sign and smiled. "Hey, I'm Miley Stewart. Are you Jack?"

"One of many Jacks, but the Jack you're looking for." He offered the sign. "Jack McCallister," he added with an open smile. "This is for you."

"Thanks!" Miley said, accepting the sign. This was going right up on her bulletin board.

"So, what, you're my new big brother?" she asked, getting down to business in her typical friendly way. "Because my actual big brother? Kind of a failure at it."

"New big brother, guide to the wonderful world of Fandom and all around person you can come to if the place starts freaking you out. A few warnings," he said, launching into a prepared spiel, "everything here is weird, you're not going crazy, I have an actual little brother named Bobby who will probably decide to drop in on you at some point and I'm in room 308 if you need to find me. How does your actual big brother fail?"

So Miley was going to get to addressing those bullet points in a second, but first she had to clear up the... Jackson issue.

"Well, let's see," she said, and began enumerating grievances by counting them off on her fingers. "We haven't seen the floor of his bedroom since we moved in, he flunked out of two colleges before transferring to Malibu Community, he still lives at home, he works in food service and he's never had a second date."

Aaaand breathe.

Then she batted her eyelashes, her old standby for being adorable. "But I'd be more than happy for a replacement."

"That's what I'm here for," Jack said with a small dramatic bow. "If you can't see the floor of my room it's probably because my roommate has his tech stuff spread out, I haven't been to college yet but I haven't flunked out of any classes either, I do work in food service but Luke's does make good burgers so it's not all bad and I do usually get second dates. Also I made you a sign. It has glitter on it. That has to count for something."

Wow. He really was perfect. Miley needed to be texting Lilly about this guy, like, now.

But -- self-control. She had it. Or she could pretend she had it and try to fool herself.

"It counts for a lot," she assured him. "Congratulations, you passed!"

"Yet again, Jack McCallister doesn't flunk. My record is safe. Soooo," he said, drawing out the word, "Where are you from? What brings you here? Are you harboring a deep secret that will come back to haunt you and those you love in six months? That happens here sometimes."

With a laugh, Miley addressed the points one at a time. "I'm from Tennessee originally, but I've been living in LA the past few years. I'm here 'cause my dad forgot to mail my registration to my actual school -- " Which came with an accompanying eye-roll, because come on, Dad. " -- and, uh, nope, no secret I can think of!"

Lie. The rest was true, though!

"Give it time. You'll probably get caught up in someone else's secret. I'm kidding," he added. "High school drama, you know how it goes."

"Oh, do I ever," Miley agreed, slightly more emphatically than the comment really called for. But over the course of her four years in Malibu, she'd gotten more people tangled up in her secret than horses at a rodeo.

"So," she said, swinging the topic around to something a little less potentially lethal. "What was that about everything being crazy?"

"Everything here is crazy," Jack said. Oh yes, he was being specific.

"So, like, are you crazy?" she nagged him. "Am I crazy?"

"I'm possibly the only sane person here. You might be crazy."

"Hey!" she protested. "I am definitely not crazy."

Although...

"I might have some quirks," she granted. "But they are endearing and uniquely charming."

"I'll look forward to getting to find out all about those. So we've established that I'm not crazy and you're not crazy. Here's the thing. All of the weird things from TV and movies are real."

And cue the point where Jack expected her to walk away.

Oh, Miley never just walked away. She just, you know, uttered a catchphrase.

"Mega-cute new Jackson say what?"

"Mega-cute?" He asked, sounding pleased, but then shook his head. "I'm getting off topic. Vampires, werewolves, people who actually like going to class. All real."

Vampires? Werewolves? People who liked school? No way, no way, and definitely no way.

"Are you sure?" she asked, raising her eyebrows. She couldn't just tell the cute guy he was crazy, of course. This kind of thing required finesse.

"I'm your school-appointed sibling. There are plenty of things I would lie about to make you look mildly stupid all in good fun. This isn't one of them."

Okay, so she could accept that, and maybe he just had one of those trustable faces.

"Okay," she said hesitantly, "so there are vampires at this school? Like, as students? Should I be concerned?"

[[Aaaaand I go to sleep now. SP tomorrow?]]

"I pretend I don't think about it. It makes life easier. I'm not concerned. It's not like anybody gets bitten."

"Well, that's a relief," Miley said, though there was a tiiiny bit of sarcasm in there. "So there's vampires, but not the evil kind?"

"You'd probably have to ask them if they were evil."
