Attitude: Just Deal With It - Tuesday, Period 2

"Yo, Rookies!" Reno grinned as he leaned back against his desk, arms crossed over his chest. "Today I was gonna talk about kickass jobs. You know, the kind that people do a double-take about and get real interested in. Move star, race car driver, helicopter pilot, secret service agent... Not that you'd be talkin' much about bein' that last one if you were, yo."

And not that Reno was at all biased about it, either. One glance at the black suit he always wore was probably indicator enough of that.

"But then I realized, shit, we can't all be movie stars. There are some pretty serious roles out there, an' some of us even have trouble puttin' up a middle finger and spittin' out a swear word, yo." And if he was giving an amused look at certain individuals around the room at that, what of it? "So I got to thinkin' a bit harder. Everyone had somethin' they wanted to be when they were kids, right? Firefighters, nurses, ballerinas, whatever? An' not everybody is gonna grow up to be those things. Sucks, but it's true, yo."

He grinned as he shifted back to sit on the top of his desk. "But that don't mean that wherever you end up has gotta suck, either. This class is about attitude, Rookies, and so's the rest of your life. What did you guys wanna be when you grew up? What do you wanna be now? How are you gonna get there? Or, if you already are there, how are you gonna make it as awesome as those fantasies you had as a little kid of flyin' around with a cape, bringin' power to the people with your lightning hands before beatin' up monsters and signin' autographs for millions of screamin' fans?"

Not that Reno, as a small child, had ever had such fantasies. Shut up.

While Nathan was sure his mum had embarrassing stories about different things he wanted to be when he grew up, Nathan himself really couldn't remember aspiring to be much. If he'd wanted to do something, he tended to do it even if it meant he got in trouble.

Maybe he'd just lie and say he'd wanted to be something ridiculous like a ballerina or something. He might not have aspired to much but he could bullshit really freaking well.

"I can't really remember being ambitious when I was a just a lad back in Ireland," Nathan admitted with a shrug. "Mostly, I wanted to beat the shit out of my dad for abandoning me and my mum but I don't think that's really a career. I think, maybe, at one point, I wanted to be a mob boss but I think that's because I watched too many movies."

Now, though. He had no idea what he wanted to be now. "I figure, once I finish up school here, I'll go back to England and work somewhere that's boring, low paying and dangerous because that's where most of the fuck ups go, yeah? Really, as long as I have enough money to buy cigarettes and beer, I'll be good. That is, unless I can make money out of suddenly being immortal but I haven't figured that one out. Still working on it, though!"

His aspirations were...all over the place and a little weird.

Peter had only ever wanted one thing, for as long as he could remember, and that was to take over the world. That, however, would not be an acceptable answer, so he schooled his expression into the standard 'good boy' facade before answering.

"I wanted to be a policeman when I was younger," he lied like a lying thing. "Upholding the law, getting to drive around in a police car, that kind of thing. But nowadays I think I'd rather go into politics - you know, help make a difference, even if it's just in a small way."

Please. Hegemon or bust.

"I suppose when I was much younger I wanted to be a fisherman," William mused. "Or I expected that was what would become of me, perhaps, is the more accurate way of putting it. And then for a while it looked like I might end up in a logging camp. Now, though, I've recently discovered an interest in detective work, and it's my hope that I can join the constabulary and perhaps work my way up to an investigative position."

"I actually already have fans?" Freddie said, tentatively. "I mean, not as many as my friends Carly or Sam. But our web show gets, like, a million viewers plus every week. And we'll probably keep doing that until people stop watching it. So I think I'm pretty sorted out, job wise."

Seifer nearly laughed when it was his turn. "I sort of got what I wanted. Not exactly, but I learned that you should really specify certain things when you're a kid."

"I wanted to run a dry cleaning business," Stan said seriously. "Most of the other jobs ended up not being quite as fun as I thought."

Especially being a cop.

Oh, Effy had plenty of attitude, the only trouble really, was figuring out what she wanted to do with it. Over a month after graduating, and she still didn't have a clue.

But the attitude thing, she could probably help with, if someone needed it.
