Cupcake War Crimes, Week 6 [Tuesday, Period 1]

In a move that would surely shock no one, the room was once again set up in the traditional Home Ec room fashion. Just as shocking was the usual sight of the two aliens up front.

Shocking like a shocking thing! That wasn’t really shocking. They saved that for the cupcake ingredients. “Got a question for you guys today,” Anders said from his spot up front, leaning against the counter, arms crossed over his chest. “What’s your favorite food? It doesn’t have to be anything really fancy. It can be something basic that you always fall back on . . . a comfort food. Mac and cheese is one for a lot of people. One of mine’s corned beef and cabbage.”

He turned to take the top off the By-Now-Established Cupcake Tray of Doom. “I love both of ‘em, and I’ll eat ‘em any time. But personally, I’m not sure either one belongs in a cupcake.”

“Like the fish,” Stark said, because he was still stuck on that after all these weeks. “Delicious, perhaps, but not in a cupcake. Never had the cabbage thing. But I like mac and cheese. But not like, like that.” He waved a hand in the direction of the offending cupcakes. “Some things should just never be in cupcakes. Cupcakes are desserts. Or they should be. Supposed to be, anyway. This is not dessert.”

Anders patted Stark lightly on the shoulder; couldn’t blame the guy for being stuck on the fish thing. That’d traumatize anyone. “Though,” he added, uncovering the second tray, Mountain Dew cupcakes turned out to be pretty good after all.”

“Soda is like dessert,” Stark said. “Sweet, at least. But those were good. Almost as good as chocolate.” But not quite. Nothing ever quite measured up to chocolate. “Maybe it would work with chocolate?”

“That’s a thought, if someone wants to give it a shot,” Anders said thoughtfully. “So take a few minutes to discuss that favorite-foods question among yourselves, then hit the mixers.” He really hoped he didn’t have to specify he didn’t mean that literally. “Oh, by the way -- Nobody Owens? The judges say you win for last week’s baking.”

Stark gave Anders a very odd look at that announcement, opened his mouth to comment on it, then just shook his head. Some things on this island would always be mysterious. The selection of the winners was apparently one of those things.

Bod couldn't really keep the smile off his face. He'd had a good week back in Kansas with Kate, his baking had been selected as tops from last week and now he was going to attempt to bake some interesting cupcakes.

Alex decided to try to make a baklava cupcake. He had no idea how it was going to turn out, but he thought he was kind of a genius for using phyllo for the 'wrapper.'

Raven made strawberry cupcakes with butter cream cheese frosting, garnished with strawberries, of course.

Alas, Sam looked, but found no fat cakes. She supposed it would maybe defeat the purpose to have an already baked cake like substance as an ingredient for a cupcake.

She couldn't actually pronounce any of the ingredients in a fat cake, so she couldn't try to approximate them here, so instead she ended up making something out of pickles.

Okay, so maybe it wasn't very class-appropriate, but Caroline's desire for chips and salsa led her down one path when it came to gathering ingredients and getting to work on some age-appropriate margarita cupcakes (http://www.jasonandshawnda.com/foodiebride/archives/1261). They might not turn out quite right, but hey, no one could fault her for trying to make it work.
