Cupcake War Crimes, Week 6 [Tuesday, Period 1]

In a move that would surely shock no one, the room was once again set up in the traditional Home Ec room fashion. Just as shocking was the usual sight of the two aliens up front.

Shocking like a shocking thing! That wasn’t really shocking. They saved that for the cupcake ingredients. “Got a question for you guys today,” Anders said from his spot up front, leaning against the counter, arms crossed over his chest. “What’s your favorite food? It doesn’t have to be anything really fancy. It can be something basic that you always fall back on . . . a comfort food. Mac and cheese is one for a lot of people. One of mine’s corned beef and cabbage.”

He turned to take the top off the By-Now-Established Cupcake Tray of Doom. “I love both of ‘em, and I’ll eat ‘em any time. But personally, I’m not sure either one belongs in a cupcake.”

“Like the fish,” Stark said, because he was still stuck on that after all these weeks. “Delicious, perhaps, but not in a cupcake. Never had the cabbage thing. But I like mac and cheese. But not like, like that.” He waved a hand in the direction of the offending cupcakes. “Some things should just never be in cupcakes. Cupcakes are desserts. Or they should be. Supposed to be, anyway. This is not dessert.”

Anders patted Stark lightly on the shoulder; couldn’t blame the guy for being stuck on the fish thing. That’d traumatize anyone. “Though,” he added, uncovering the second tray, Mountain Dew cupcakes turned out to be pretty good after all.”

“Soda is like dessert,” Stark said. “Sweet, at least. But those were good. Almost as good as chocolate.” But not quite. Nothing ever quite measured up to chocolate. “Maybe it would work with chocolate?”

“That’s a thought, if someone wants to give it a shot,” Anders said thoughtfully. “So take a few minutes to discuss that favorite-foods question among yourselves, then hit the mixers.” He really hoped he didn’t have to specify he didn’t mean that literally. “Oh, by the way -- Nobody Owens? The judges say you win for last week’s baking.”

Stark gave Anders a very odd look at that announcement, opened his mouth to comment on it, then just shook his head. Some things on this island would always be mysterious. The selection of the winners was apparently one of those things.

Bod wasn't really sure if he had a favorite food. He liked food in general and he liked trying out new foods but if he had to pick, he'd probably pick pizza.

And he really couldn't see pizza going in a cupcake. Maybe components of a pizza could go in a cupcake but not an actual pizza. "I think different parts of a pizza could go in a cupcake. Perhaps someone wants bacon or pineapple in a cupcake but an actual pizza slice shouldn't go in a cupcake."

"There's a whole logistical issue," Chuck agreed. He'd been thinking along the same lines. "If you're going to stick a whole pizza slice into a cupcake, you're not going to have the space left for... actual cupcake."

"I know they're not very good for me," Ariel mused with a pleased smile, "but I really do love Cheetos, and I've thought of trying making a cupcake with them. It worked for pizza, so why not? I wonder if it would work with carrot cake, to keep up with the whole orange theme."

"I really, really, love mimosas," Juliet enthused. (Drinking age, what drinking age?) "I bet they'd make great cupcakes. It could be orange cake with a champagne buttercream frosting!"

"Hamburgers are definitely my favorite food," said Lion-o. "But putting a hamburger in a cupcake? Yuck!"

"I like all sorts of food, but I think my favorite is probably Greek," duh, "especially gyros. But you shouldn't put gyros in a cupcake. Maybe you could do something with yogurt? Oh! Or baklava!" Alex said, warming to this idea.

"I am very fond of fruits," Raven said. "Strawberries, if I must choose one. I am certain they can be used in cupcakes in their true form, if not in flavoring."

"Ice cream," Bobby said predictably. "I don't know if it'd work really well in a cupcake, but it's pretty good with cupcakes. Or any kind of cake. Or pie. Or by itself..."

"Yeah, no one would eat my favorite food in a cupcake," Caroline realized quickly. "I don't know that even I would give it a try, and I'll eat basically anything I can stuff in my face. Which makes me wonder a little if chips and salsa would make a good cupcake. Chips would be awesome right now..." Someone needed to quit skipping breakfast for class.

"I adore Susan's monkey-face cookies," Rilla admitted, "which are mostly molasses and cinnamon and cloves. I think that could be a very delicious cupcake."

If she could get the proportions correct.

Bod couldn't really keep the smile off his face. He'd had a good week back in Kansas with Kate, his baking had been selected as tops from last week and now he was going to attempt to bake some interesting cupcakes.

Alex decided to try to make a baklava cupcake. He had no idea how it was going to turn out, but he thought he was kind of a genius for using phyllo for the 'wrapper.'

Alas, Sam looked, but found no fat cakes. She supposed it would maybe defeat the purpose to have an already baked cake like substance as an ingredient for a cupcake.

She couldn't actually pronounce any of the ingredients in a fat cake, so she couldn't try to approximate them here, so instead she ended up making something out of pickles.

Okay, so maybe it wasn't very class-appropriate, but Caroline's desire for chips and salsa led her down one path when it came to gathering ingredients and getting to work on some age-appropriate margarita cupcakes (http://www.jasonandshawnda.com/foodiebride/archives/1261). They might not turn out quite right, but hey, no one could fault her for trying to make it work.

Anders wasn't above sitting on the edge of the counter to watch the class today; he might have been genuinely interested in what kinds of things they were up to, but he wasn't going to worry too much about decorum while he was watching the baking process, either.
