Library, Sunday 06/12

After last weekend, Raven was more than happy to spend a quiet weekend in the cabins, keeping to herself for the most part. But come Sunday morning she headed back to the school to work in the library. There was something soothing about sorting and re-shelving the books that had been returned. OCD was her friend.

She's in the stacks a lot today, but checking the front desk regularly.

Elphaba Thropp had gone into the library to browse the stacks. She'd had a lot on her mind lately, and had quite fallen back on to her somewhat hermit-y ways. That also meant she needed things to occupy herself. So when she bumped into (not literally) Raven that day, she had a stack of books in her arms almost up to her chin.

"Oh, hello Raven," she greeted. "I did not expect you here on a Sunday."

"Hello, Elphaba," Raven said, holding out her hands. "Please, let me help you with some of those! I work here on Sundays now, and I would be happy to assist you."

"Oh, well, I suppose that would be helpful for now," Elphaba said. "After all, I can hardly get you to help me bring them back to the cabins for me."

She chuckled softly, and held out the stack of books for Raven to take some. The majority were books on folklore and fairy tales.

And on the the bottom was a biography on L Frank Baum. She needed to get back to that whole business.

"I could teleport you and them back to the cabins," Raven offered, taking half the stack of books. "It is no bother, really. But first I must check these out properly for you."

She began to walk towards the front desk, glancing at the book titles as she did. "Are these for a class project?" she said. "I know you are in Professor Perrault's class with me."

"I'm trying to learn more," Elphaba said. "While I always find Professor Perrault one of the best teachers, I sometimes feel like I'm at a slight disadvantage, coming from a different world. Even if my own world has been told of like it was a children's story itself."

"I share your disadvantage," Raven said with a nod. "I am familiar with very few of the stories. The Library of Azarath was vast, but there were no storytellers in my home. I was never encouraged to read the books on folklore and legends."

"All I had to do back in Oz was read, at least once I had learned to," Elphaba said. "I don't think I've ever heard much of the land you come from, actually. Would you mind telling me of it, sometime?"

"Certainly," Raven said. She tried not to think of Azarath as she had last seen it, dark and twisted with her future self's evil. "I would be happy to answer any questions you might have."

Elphaba started to head towards the main desk so they could check out the books.

"I'm not sure where I'd start, with questions," Elphaba admitted. "But perhaps... what is your fondest memory of your home?"

Raven didn't answer for a moment, setting the books on the front desk and beginning to scan them into the computer so they could be checked out properly. "I think perhaps the first time I was able to heal," she said. "Azar, my teacher, guided me through it. I was still a child, and she brought me a bird that had broken its wing. I felt so proud when I was able to restore it to health. I thought there was nothing I could not heal."

"That is a good memory," Elphaba said. She didn't remark on the naivete of thinking you could heal everything, though she did think it. "I know it's not central to the story, but what sort of bird was it?"

As always, Elphaba was overly interested in the animals.

"A dove, I think," Raven said, thinking back. "It was pure white, the opposite of the bird from which I take my name."

"You take your name?" Elphaba said. "So Raven was not the name that your parents gave you?"

"Oh, I have misspoken, I did not name myself," Raven said, shaking her head, "But my parents did not name me, either. It was Azar who called me Raven. I do not know her reasons, however."

"Perhaps the color of your hair," Elphaba remarked. "Though your skin is quite like the dove. I would say Penguin would be an apt name, but I do believe you'd think me making jest, which is not what I'd intend at all."

"But penguins cannot fly," Raven pointed out, "and I can. My Soul-Self can, at least." And so had she, in the future.

Besides, penguins was Bobby's schtick.

"I rather like penguins," Elphaba said. "But you're right, they cannot. But they are excellent swimmers. But I was merely making the comparison of the contrast between your skin and your hair. It's one of the reasons your appearance is so striking."

"Thank you," Raven said, blushing a little.

She finished scanning in the books and assigned them to Elphaba's name in the computer. "These will be due in two weeks, unless you wish to renew them," she said.

"I'll probably be done with them in less than that," Elphaba said. "I have quite a lot of time to read, when I'm not out trying to find the teal deer."

"Please tell me which of the books you find the most interesting," Raven said with a smile. "Perhaps I will read it when you are done."

"I'll give you a full report," Elphaba said, bundling up the books in her arms. "It's the least I can do for a friend, after all."

"Thank you," Raven said.

"Do you wish me to teleport you back to the camp?" she asked. "The walk is long and you have many books to carry."

As you do.

If she's there today.

Aliens today, perhaps.
