Try Not to Die!! [Tuesday, June 7]

Anakin met his class on the causeway to the new town this morning. "Today's activities will be about survival in a not-quite tamed mining town. As usual, you will complete two activities while trying not to die." He stepped clear of the clue box. "May the Force be with you."

Horses. Sam would have preferred to just walk or even jog but now he had to ride a horse. It took him some time to get the saddle on the horse and then to get the horse to head in the right direction. By then, he'd lost some time and had to rush through the gold part of the roadblock.

He managed to find five gold nuggets quick enough though two had to go back because they were too tiny and mud covered. With a sigh, Sam went back to find two more pieces. He managed to find two passable pieces a few minutes later and took off.

The horse riding wasn't a problem for Goose, he did have some trouble with the gold panning but it wasn't long before he found five gold pieces that were enough to pass.

Horses. Alice was more used to feeding on animals than riding on them, but you did what you had to do.

She followed the natives' directions easily enough, and learning to pan wasn't so hard. The actual finding gold nuggets took for-freakin'-ever, though. The bright spot of that was that all five of her nuggets passed on the first try.

Yay!

. . . oh, the horse riding was going to be a problem. She could ride, but Gabrielle usually needed help getting on a horse when she didn't have a badly sprained ankle.

She tried to manage it on her own at first; there were several spectacular faceplants, a couple of which spooked her horse so she had to chase it down (again, difficult with her ankle) and try to calm it down. Finally she managed to swing herself up into the saddle, only to start sliding sideways because she hadn't tightened the girths enough, which meant getting back down, falling in the process and having to calm the horse again, readjusting the girths (for the love of the gods, don't ask how a girl from ancient Greece was that familiar with modern tack), then talking a bystander into helping her up.

All told, it took a really huge chunk out of her class time, and then she had to take the ride slowly because anything faster than a gentle trot jarred her shoulder.

Learning how to pan for gold was the easy part, compared to everything else, and even finding five suitable nuggets wasn't entirely horrible, but that took her a while too.

Sigh.

Huh... Horses. Warren didn't have much experience with them, but he wasn't afraid to push his to go as quickly as possible, either. His wings, hidden today with the help of the bracelet that Karla had given him, were excellent for balance, and he wasn't really afraid of falling off. Moving quickly was kind of what he did.

The panning for gold bit, he managed to more or less luck out on. Maybe it was some kind of Worthington thing, being able to get his hands on large amounts of wealth, with little effort?

Horses, Surreal could manage. She was actually a decent rider, since Sadi had gotten her lessons at one point, and animals had always liked her.

The ride to the creek was easy and fast, it was the panning for gold that took ages and ages. She was finding plenty of teensy gold flakes, but nothing large enough to satisfy the prospector.

Riding! Angelica had no problem with that part, though the panning for gold took a little more time. One of her nuggets wasn't large enough the first time, but it didn't take her long to find a replacement.

The riding, Kate was perfectly happy with. They had regressed to a point where horses were the most reliable form of transportation at home. Tacking up a horse and riding out to wherever she needed to get was if not a daily problem, at least a weekly one.

Getting to the creek was easy, and she made good speed.

Panning for gold on the other hand... That might take her a while. Like most people here, it wasn't anything she'd done or ever considered doing before.

Cassidy loved animals and she was familiar with horses. She enjoyed the ride and spent a lot of time talking to the horse until they got to the creek.

The panning for gold was a little more difficult than she expected it to be, but she still had great fun. Once she pleased the person in charge, she got back on the horse and followed the next clue.

For some reason, Alexander's horse decided not to cooperate with him very well; the whole time he could hear his riding instructor facepalm and his sister laughing so hard it pained her. And, if that wasn't one thing, there was the other. Maybe it was the fact that one of his family heirlooms was an endless chest of gold, so the universe figured he had enough, but he wasn't having much luck finding any gold, either.

...Horses. Toby had never ridden a horse before. Luckily, the animal seemed to know what it was doing more than he did, taking him at a brisk pace towards the creek.

Toby had figured out early on that his ability to know things he shouldn't had a tendency to put people off, so he'd learned how to compensate for that when he wanted to. That's what he was doing now, keeping up a steady stream of cheerful chatter, just enough to keep the prospector in a good enough mood that he waved his finds through with nothing more than a cursory inspection.

And for whatever curse that might be on him this week, Jack ended up with a horse that had a very disagreeable attitude. One that tended to stop and not move no matter what urging and cursing Jack did.

By the time he got to the prospector Jack was hardly in the mood for gold panning but fortunately for him the nuggets appeared rather quickly.

Now if only that horse would cooperate.

The horseback riding wasn't so bad, once Richie figured out how to put the saddle on without it immediately sliding over to one side and then figured out how to get up on the horse.

At least the panning for gold was easy enough. Sure, it took a while but not nearly as long as it could have. Which was a good thing, because his lack of horsey experience had already cost him a lot of time.

Riding or no, Cara was (still) in a mood today, enough of one that the craggy prospector was more than happy to declare each of her nuggets passing muster. Even the one she was pretty sure wasn't actually gold.

It was the horse that slowed Annie down. She got on it just fine, but once it was time to go to the creek, it just refused to move at times. It would just slow down or stop and nothing Annie could do would get it to go until it was damn well ready to.

Once she got there, the panning for gold came pretty easily to her, and she presented five pieces quickly with hope that she might still come back from this.

Wait, did she have to raise that same horse to the next thing?

Sam didn't think he was last but he knew he didn't do as well as he had last week. He was going to blame the horse that seemed to hate him. Sam swore that horse had even been glaring at him when he'd finally gotten off and headed to check in.
