Library [06/03]

A couple of days ago, there was nothing in the world that could have gotten Wesley into the library, not even his assigned shift. But then he'd spoken to Karla, and she'd been so helpful, and suddenly this was something that he was able to do. So he sat at the desk, and occasionally looked tentatively over toward the books, considering shelving them. He never did, but he kept looking over anyway.

Wesley nodded in rather fervent agreement. "Yes, I... I suppose you've had this conversation with a number of those who watched the Games," he ventured. Which begged the question of whether Anakin himself was all right, but Wesley didn't know if it was his place to ask.

Anakin nodded. "It wasn't an easy thing to witness, and I'm an adult and have seen some rather nasty things before this. I wanted to be sure that you were all out of your rooms."

Wesley hadn't meant to embarrass Anakin or anything like that. It was just that at the Council, he would have been told to get over it somehow. But everyone here was so compassionate. It was remarkable.

"Still," he pressed. "I appreciate it. Thank you."

Anakin's council too, and look how well that had turned out. Ahem.

"You're quite welcome," he said. "When I was only a little older than you are, I lost my wife." In a manner of speaking. "There are days when getting out of bed will be your major accomplishment, and that's all right."

"I'm so sorry," Wesley said softly, sincerely. He knew how badly he was feeling right now, and to imagine what it had to be like to lose a wife... it must be agony. His heart went out to Anakin.

Wesley nodded, with only the vaguest understanding of what that must feel like. Right now, Katniss was all he was thinking about, and he couldn't even imagine a point in the future when she might not be at the front of his mind at all times.
"It must be awful for you," he said softly. "Dealing with loss all over again."
