Cupcake War Crimes, Week 3 (Tuesday, Period 1)

Upon entering the classroom today, students would find the usual baking setup (including, up front, the two alien boys in charge of the workshop) and two large covered trays of cupcakes, but in the center of the front counter was a large strainer bowl full of vegetables. Carrots, celery, red and green peppers, a particularly leafy bunch of green kale, cucumbers, radishes . . .

"Okay," Anders said, clapping his hands together once in a boisterous way better suited to a gym than a classroom. "Today we're gonna discuss vegetables. Good for you, right? Right. Not always that appealing, right? Right. People've been trying to find creative ways to get kids to eat their veggies for gods know how long." People not him. He liked them. Occasionally wrapped in bacon, but shh.

“I like vegetables,” Stark pointed out. Possibly just because he enjoyed foods that weren’t food cubes or unidentifiable substances because they were a nice change from what he’d had for most of his life before coming here. “But not like this.” He reached over and revealed the cupcakes on the first tray. First there were chocolate sauerkraut cupcakes. “No sauerkraut.” He turned to Anders. “Didn’t we already have sauerkraut cupcakes?”

Anders blinked at him, scratched behind one ear, and shrugged. “It was worth emphasizing again? No beet cupcakes, either, even if the cream cheese frosting looks really good. Then there’s these, with sweet potato in them.” He shrugged and glanced at the class. “I don’t know. What do you guys think? Is it right to trick people into eating vegetables in cupcakes, just because they’re good for you? Or is that just mean? Is it okay if they know up front what they’re getting into?”

Hey, he was trying to be diplomatic about it. He still thought it was horrible.

“Better if they know what is in the cupcakes,” Stark said. “No need to trick anyone.” That was just mean. “But still. Don’t need to be healthy. Cupcakes aren’t supposed to be healthy. They are desserts. Just treats.”

“These are treats,” Anders added, uncovering the second tray to reveal a nice array of carrot-raisin cupcakes, and some chocolate cupcakes frosted with veggie shapes. “Carrots are okay in cupcakes, if you ask me. So how about you guys discuss the question for a bit, and then get to baking?

“You don’t really taste the carrots,” Stark said. “At all.”

“So it’s okay,” Anders added lamely. “Anyway. Let’s get cracking, okay?”

“You forgot last week’s cupcakes,” Stark said quickly. “We can’t forget them.” Even if some efforts had been slightly questionable. They’re looking at you, Sam, with your meaty cupcakes.

And yet. “Yeah, we picked a winner from last week’s work,” Anders said quickly. It had been a whole process involving blind taste-testing and . . . probably a mixup in their notes somewhere. Gods knew he sure looked confused. “Sam Puckett, congrats.”

Is it cool to sneak vegetables into people’s cupcakes without telling them?

"While I don't think I'd mind vegetables in cupcakes depending on the vegetable in question, I'd also dislike being tricked into eating something," Bod answered. "What if I'm possibly allergic to the vegetable in the cupcake? I can see the allure of tricking someone but it seems like there's more of a chance it'd go bad then beneficial."

"It depends on what the vegetable is," Juliet decided. "Sweet potatoes and carrots aren't that weird. One time I had a black bean brownie and I couldn't tell. If you can't taste it, there's no harm, is there?"

"I agree with Juliet," Rilla decided. "Zucchini and carrots are one thing. Lettuce would be quite another."

Ariel was super glad to sample all the cupcakes and, as it came to the question, she shrugged.

"I don't think it's very effective," she said. "I mean, sure, vegetables, but there's all that sugar and everything. It's like if you deep fried...asparagus or something. Sure, it's a vegetable, but it's still deep fried."

It appeared that her philosophies on life seemed to center around deep frying things lately. It seemed to be working, so why not stick with it?

"I think I'd rather have the meat than the vegetables," Jake said, because he was kind of crazy like that.

"I'd say it's okay," Chuck decided. "I mean, provided the person isn't allergic or anything, and it tasted good."

"I won?" Sam blinked. "I won." And it didn't even involve fat cakes or fighting. "Mama won! Wooooooooooooooooo!" She pumped a victorious fist into the air and did a little dance.

A moment later, she realized that people might be staring at her and composed herself. "Uh. Vegetables. Yeah. If they don't ask, that's their problem."

"No," Lindsay said in a matter-of-fact tone. "Vegetables have no business being in a cupcake. None at all."

She was very adamant about that.

Individually, or team up if you want. The usual array of moddable ingredients is on hand, plus a moddable selection of vegetables.

Bod got to work on baking some more of cupcakes. He stayed away from the vegetables for today and went with chocolate and caramel mix with nuts sprinkled on top. Cupcakes were getting easier to bake.

Okay, Jake was going to be adventurous and try to create a carrot cupcake with cream cheese. Just because he gave the meat a chance, he should try the veggies too. Even if he was sticking with a more classic combination.

Emboldened by her victory (and, no, she hadn't noticed the odd, unhappy looks the teachers had exchanged), Sam decided to make her cupcakes of the week with jalapeno and cheddar.

Jalapeno was totally a vegetable, right?

Goose's baking skills were somewhat improving, even if his choice of ingredients were not.

This week he decided to try and mix vegetables and chocolate in together.

Raven tried her hand at butternut squash cupcakes with sage cream cheese frosting. She followed the recipe very carefully.

Stark was there, occasionally giving Anders a very odd look for announcing Sam as the winner. He didn't remember that happening. At all.
