Try Not to Die!! [Tuesday, May 17, 3rd period]

Anakin was rather enjoying the movements of the island, even if this one took them to a place as hot and full of sand as Tatooine. Ugh, sand. It certainly made coming up with his class assignments more interesting.

"Welcome to Alexandria, Egypt," he said. Rory was going to love hearing where they were now. "Today's tasks will take you through this ancient city," he paused, "in its heyday."

Working in Fandom was weird. He stepped back from the clue box. "You will complete two tasks, then meet Tahiri and I somewhere in the city. Try not to die."

Ready to race through Egypt!

Alexandria was rightfully famed for its library. Its collection was expanded ~~according to Wiki, anyway~~ by a policy of taking every book from every
ship that came into port.

Your roadblock today was going to the port, finding a ~~handwavily~~ marked ship as it arrived and removing its books, then taking them to the head librarian at the Library. On foot. Without getting lost in this massive city, or getting turned around and ending up at one of the other libraries in town.

The head librarian will hand you your next clue!

Pick one of these two tasks, which will teach you more about how the library worked!

The library of Alexandria is the world's largest user of papyrus. Taking one of the Homeric texts ~~handwavily~~ before you, transcribe five pages of ancient Greek onto a papyrus scroll. When the head librarian is satisfied with your work, he'll hand you your next clue.

The books that were taken from ships were returned after they were transcribed: this wasn't just an elaborate knowledge robbery. Find a wheelbarrow full of scrolls and codexes that must be hauled back to the docks and then matched to the ships--from around the ancient world, and all of the languages they'd spoken--they'd come from.

This could also take some time.

Who is waiting for you in the main market and will tell you how ~~the RNG said~~ you did!

If you get completely lost or turned around or, you know, thrown in prison or something.

Okay. On foot? Warren could handle that. He'd already hidden his wings away for the sake of running around this place, because while the Vikings had seemed easygoing enough to take his mutation in stride, Warren still wasn't entirely certain what to make of the ancient Egyptians. So, on foot. On foot was good.

... He was so, so lost, and had no idea how in the world to ask for instructions around here. A certain somebody functioned so much better when he had his birds-eye views to work with, yes.

Warren is mortified!

I, on the other hand, am enjoying coming up with ways that a guy who can fly could possibly lose a race against a bunch of people on foot. :D

Sam was suddenly glad he'd gone out into Alexandria yesterday so the massive city didn't completely intimidate him. He managed to find the ship quick enough and tucked the books under his arm before turning to try and find the Library.

The crowds in the streets slowed him and he got some bad directions from a local which had him turned around and lost for a few minutes before he managed to find his way back. The heat wasn't helping this trek at all.

Naturally, once Warren finished wandering aimlessly around Alexandria and attempting elaborate pantomimes in order to help him find his way, he'd decided that hauling was probably his better bet in order to help him get caught up. After all, he had the upper-body strength to handle plenty.

... The hauling part, that was easy.

The multilingualism, on the other hand...

By the time he'd actually finished getting the books to the right places, his classmates were nowhere to be seen, and he was contemplating just burying his head under the sand and not coming out again.

While the hauling seemed more up his alley, Sam knew he was pretty winded from the first part of the class so he chose to write. Sam took his time so he'd get everything right on the first try but wasn't surprised when he messed up a little.

After another try, the head librarian seemed satisfied with his work and he was able to snag his clue and head out.

See Warren show up, look around to see everyone else there, and bury his face in his hand.

"Oh god."

What you couldn't see, thanks to the magic in the bracelet that Karla had given him so that he could hide his wings, was the fact that he'd pretty much draped his wings over his head in a futile effort to hide behind those, too. Not so effective, when they were invisible.

After finishing up with his writing, Sam made his way through the market to try and find Professor Skywalker. He was actually pretty happy with his finish. He was right in the middle of the pack and was consistent from one week to another. Not bad.

Anakin's eyes twinkled at him. "Warren, you're the last to arrive," he intoned solemnly.

"Hello, Sam, you're the ninth student to arrive," Anakin told him. "There's fruit juice for you if you're dehydrated. It's hot as Tatooine out here."

Toby Logan

"Completely last? Not even second-to-last? Last, last?"

Yes, Warren. Last. And trying to smother yourself under your own feathers wasn't going to change that, so stop it.

"I... think I got maybe a little lost, back there."

A smidgen.

Sure Cara could have asked for directions, but that would have taken more effort and more politeness than she care to make. Much easier to simply grab a passer-by and inform them they were playing guide, and if wanted to start a brawl in the street over it, well there were some kinds of effort she was still capable of making.

(Un)fortunately, the chosen passer-by had enough to survival instincts to go along with what the scary blonde foreigner wanted.
