Summer Fitness and Survival, Monday, Period Four

Bond had let his class know to come down to the beach for today's class and to wear something they didn't mind getting wet. When they arrived down at the beach, they would have found several
kayaks dragged up above the tide line, and Bond leaning on an oar.

"One of the most important skills needed for survival is teamwork," Bond began. "If you can't trust the people you might be stranded with to watch your back, if only for a while, then you're already dead. Which is why we'll be practising your teamwork skills having a little race today. I want you to find a partner, get your kayak into the water and navigate the course." He pointed out to a series of bouys bobbing out on the water. "The winners will be determined by a combination of speed at finishing the course and lack of mishaps in the process."

"And do remember to put on your vests first."

Get your vests on, start looking for a partner.

Mercy looked around for a partner while she listened to the lecture.

"Have you ever done this before?" asked Alexander, giving the other student a smile. She, like him, seemed to be looking for a potential partner, though he was worried a little about his own abilities.

Mercy shook her head. "Were -" She cut herself off and quickly changed 'werewolves don't do well in water' to "Where I come from, we didn't do many water sports."

The little catch was...interesting, though, to Mercy's benefit, Alexander was left wondering where she was going to mention.

"Ah," he said with a smile, "then I won't have to feel too bad about my own inadequacies, though I'm fond of all sorts for boating. Would you do me the honor of being my partner for today's activity?"

"Sure," Mercy said easily. "Especially if you know something about boats. that will definitely be a help."

"Perfect, then," Alexander smiled. "Have you got your vest?" Of course he had his on already.

"Of course," Mercy said. "Safety first, right?"

"Precisely," said Alexander, laughing. "Well, then, let's get to the boat."

Jason got his vest on and looked out at the water as he waited for a partner.

Bobby was going to make Jack be his partner (becaause that's what you did when you were a little brother), but then he saw Jason and immediately bounced over.

"Hi Jason! Wanna be partners? I mean, I don't know how to kayak at all so it's okay if you don't. But maybe we'd be naturally good at it!"

"I don't know anything about kayaking either, so at least we're even?" Jason said. "Are you sure you don't want to pair up with someone with experience?"

"It's probably better to be even," Bobby decided. "Then it's both of our fault when we flip over."

"Or we could aim for not flipping over," Jason suggested. "But you should probably get your vest on right just in case I feel an urge to get you wet." He was totally teasing...probably.

Of course before you can even think about rowing to out and around those buoys, you are going to have to get the kayak into the water, good luck with that.

Mercy's ready to work on getting the kayak into the water once she has her partner.

And Alexander was quick to help. "So, if we can get a good rhythm going with the oars," he offered thoughtfully, "we should be in fairly good shape."

Mercy nodded. "I can do that," she said. She was in good shape with fast reflexes, so she caught on pretty quickly.

"So this should be a lovely little boating trip, then!" Alexander said with a laugh, quickly moving to hop into the kayak once it hit the water, and then went to see if Mercy needed any assistance in joining him.

Mercy watched him carefully, then mimicked him, getting in with only a bit of a bobble. "It'll be an experience, that's for sure."

That got another laugh out of Alexander as he settled in and started paddling, nice and smooth before they got into the more tricky parts of the course. "That's fair enough," he allowed. "And then you shall be prepared the next time you have to find yourself in a kayak..."

"I suppose I will," she said with a grin as she copied his paddling.

He's keeping an eye out in case anyone gets into too much trouble. Him and his tiny blue swim-trunks.
