Try Not to Die!! [Tuesday, May 10, 3rd period]

Today, Anakin was a little bit grateful for the cloak he habitually wore as he waited for his class to arrive outside on the border between Fandom and the Viking village. It was a little chilly for a guy who grew up in the desert.

"The island has given us too great an opportunity to ignore today in this course," Anakin told them as his robe flapped occasionally in the breeze in front of a sturdy little clue box. "You will have to complete two tasks today that will hopefully teach you a little bit more about the Vikings and their traditions. Try not to die!"

With that he stepped out of the way of the clue box.

Tahiri would do a number on a practice dummy over that herself, when she wasn't so worn out from trying to keep herself together.

"So am I," she said, trying to muster up a smile. It wasn't quite there, but at least the effort was obvious. "I suppose I could think of it as at least being final enough to not leave any doubt, but . . ."

It was too early for that kind of rationalization.

Anakin reached out to touch her shoulder. "It's too soon."

Tahiri could still remember, fairly vividly, the look on Anakin's face when he'd confronted her about what the other version of her had done to Ben, and warned her not to do the same; it didn't seem real now, and she gave in to the need for comfort.

"Only a few hours," she admitted thickly. "It's still sinking in."

It suddenly hit Anakin that he was almost alone again on the island. Jaina and Ben, both gone just like that, and Leia was devoting herself doggedly to the Rebellion...it was lonely.

"Well, when it sinks in, find me," he murmured. "Any time."

And she couldn't stay forever, either, could she?

"Jaina's gone," Tahiri replied quietly, unwittingly echoing that thought. "Don't be surprised if I do."

He squeezed her shoulder again, feeling a little awkward about it. Teenage romantic entanglements were far from his specialty.

This one being as tangled as it was . . .

Tahiri gave him a grateful look. "Thank you. I suppose we should keep an eye on the students for now, though."

"It says 'try not to die' right there in the course sign-up," Anakin said with a tiny smile. "Hopefully they can follow directions the first day."

"I'd like to think so," Tahiri answered. "Let's hope no one decides to take that as a challenge."
